Jesus Has Risen^(A)

16 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices^(B) so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. ² Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb ³ and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”^(C)

² There was a violent earthquake,^(A) for an angel^(B) of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone^(C) and sat on it. ³ His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow.^{(D) 4} The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

⁵ The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid,^(E) for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. ⁶ He is not here; he has risen, just as he said.^(F) Come and see the place where he lay. ⁷ Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee.^(G) There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”

⁸ So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples.

³ So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb.^{(A) 4} Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. ⁵ He bent over and looked in^(B) at the strips of linen^(C) lying there but did not go in. ⁶ Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, ⁷ as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head.^(D) The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. ⁸ Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first,^(E) also went inside. He saw and believed. ⁹ (They still did not understand from Scripture^(F) that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)^{(G) 10} Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

¹¹ Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb^{(H) 12} and saw two angels in white,^(I) seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.

¹³ They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?”^(J)

“They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.”^{(K) 14} At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there,^(L) but she did not realize that it was Jesus.^(M)

¹⁵ He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?^(N) Who is it you are looking for?”

Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”

¹⁶ Jesus said to her, “Mary.”

She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic,^(O) “Rabboni!”^(P) (which means “Teacher”).

¹⁷ Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers^(Q) and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father^(R) and your Father, to my God and your God.’”

¹⁸ Mary Magdalene^(S) went to the disciples^(T) with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.
