Isus înaintea lui Pilat
15 Dimineaţa(A), preoţii cei mai de seamă au făcut îndată sfat cu bătrânii, cărturarii şi tot soborul. După ce au legat pe Isus, L-au dus şi L-au dat în mâinile lui Pilat. 2 Pilat(B) L-a întrebat: „Eşti Tu Împăratul iudeilor?” „Da, sunt”, i-a răspuns Isus. 3 Preoţii cei mai de seamă Îl învinuiau de multe lucruri. 4 Pilat(C) L-a întrebat din nou: „Nu răspunzi nimic? Uite de câte lucruri Te învinuiesc ei!” 5 Isus(D) n-a mai dat niciun răspuns, lucru care a mirat pe Pilat.
Hotărârea de moarte întărită
6 La(E) fiecare Praznic al Paştelor, Pilat le slobozea un întemniţat, pe care-l cereau ei. 7 În temniţă era unul numit Baraba, închis împreună cu tovarăşii lui din pricina unui omor pe care-l săvârşiseră într-o răscoală. 8 Norodul s-a suit şi a început să ceară lui Pilat să le dea ce avea obicei să le dea totdeauna. 9 Pilat le-a răspuns: „Voiţi să vă slobod pe Împăratul iudeilor?” 10 Căci pricepuse că preoţii cei mai de seamă din pizmă Îl dăduseră în mâna lui. 11 Dar preoţii(F) cei mai de seamă au aţâţat norodul să ceară lui Pilat să le sloboadă mai bine pe Baraba. 12 Pilat a luat din nou cuvântul şi le-a zis: „Dar ce voiţi să fac cu Acela, pe care-L numiţi Împăratul iudeilor?” 13 Ei au strigat din nou: „Răstigneşte-L!” 14 „Dar ce rău a făcut?” le-a zis Pilat. Însă ei au început să strige şi mai tare: „Răstigneşte-L!” 15 Pilat(G) a vrut să facă pe placul norodului şi le-a slobozit pe Baraba, iar pe Isus, după ce a pus să-L bată cu nuiele, L-a dat să fie răstignit. 16 Ostaşii(H) au adus pe Isus în curte, adică în palat, şi au adunat toată ceata ostaşilor. 17 L-au îmbrăcat într-o haină de purpură, au împletit o cunună de spini şi I-au pus-o pe cap. 18 Apoi au început să-I ureze şi să zică: „Plecăciune, Împăratul iudeilor!” 19 Şi-L loveau în cap cu o trestie, Îl scuipau, îngenuncheau şi I se închinau. 20 După ce şi-au bătut astfel joc de El, L-au dezbrăcat de haina de purpură, L-au îmbrăcat în hainele Lui şi L-au dus să-L răstignească.
Răstignirea
21 Au(I) silit să ducă crucea lui Isus pe un trecător care se întorcea de la câmp, numit Simon din Cirene, tatăl lui Alexandru şi al lui Rufus. 22 Şi(J) au adus pe Isus la locul numit Golgota, care, tălmăcit, înseamnă: „Locul căpăţânii”. 23 I-au(K) dat să bea vin amestecat cu smirnă, dar El nu l-a luat. 24 După ce L-au răstignit, I-au(L) împărţit hainele între ei trăgând la sorţi, ca să ştie ce să ia fiecare. 25 Când L-au răstignit, era(M) ceasul al treilea. 26 Deasupra Lui era scrisă(N) vina Lui: „Împăratul iudeilor”. 27 Împreună(O) cu El au răstignit doi tâlhari, unul la dreapta şi altul la stânga Lui. 28 Astfel s-a împlinit Scriptura, care zice: „A(P) fost pus în numărul celor fărădelege”.
Batjocurile trecătorilor
29 Trecătorii(Q) îşi băteau joc de El, dădeau din cap şi ziceau: „Uă! Tu, care strici Templul şi-l zideşti la loc în trei zile, 30 mântuieşte-Te pe Tine Însuţi şi pogoară-Te de pe cruce!” 31 Tot astfel şi preoţii cei mai de seamă, împreună cu cărturarii, îşi băteau joc de El între ei şi ziceau: „Pe alţii i-a mântuit, şi pe Sine Însuşi nu Se poate mântui! 32 Hristosul, Împăratul lui Israel, să Se pogoare acum de pe cruce, ca să vedem şi să credem!” Cei(R) răstigniţi împreună cu El, de asemenea, îşi băteau joc de El.
Moartea lui Isus
33 La ceasul(S) al şaselea, s-a făcut întuneric peste toată ţara până la ceasul al nouălea. 34 Şi în ceasul al nouălea, Isus a strigat cu glas tare: „Eli(T), Eli, lama sabactani” care, tălmăcit, înseamnă: „Dumnezeul Meu, Dumnezeul Meu, pentru ce M-ai părăsit?” 35 Unii din cei ce stăteau acolo, când L-au auzit, ziceau: „Iată, cheamă pe Ilie!” 36 Şi unul din ei a alergat(U) de a umplut un burete cu oţet, l-a pus într-o trestie şi I-a dat(V) să bea, zicând: „Lăsaţi să vedem dacă va veni Ilie să-L pogoare de pe cruce!” 37 Dar(W) Isus a scos un strigăt tare şi Şi-a dat duhul. 38 Perdeaua(X) dinăuntrul Templului s-a rupt în două de sus până jos. 39 Sutaşul, care sta în faţa lui Isus, când a văzut(Y) că Şi-a dat astfel duhul, a zis: „Cu adevărat, Omul acesta era Fiul lui Dumnezeu!” 40 Acolo(Z) erau şi nişte femei care priveau de(AA) departe. Printre ele erau Maria Magdalena, Maria, mama lui Iacov cel mic şi a lui Iose, şi Salome, 41 care, pe când era El în Galileea, mergeau(AB) după El şi-I slujeau, şi multe alte femei care se suiseră împreună cu El în Ierusalim.
Îngroparea lui Isus
42 Când(AC) s-a înserat, fiindcă era Ziua Pregătirii, adică ziua dinaintea Sabatului, 43 a venit Iosif din Arimateea, un sfetnic cu vază al soborului, care şi el aştepta(AD) Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu. El a îndrăznit să se ducă la Pilat ca să ceară trupul lui Isus. 44 Pilat s-a mirat că murise aşa de curând. A chemat pe sutaş şi l-a întrebat dacă a murit de mult. 45 După ce s-a încredinţat de la sutaş că a murit, a dăruit lui Iosif trupul. 46 Şi(AE) Iosif a cumpărat o pânză subţire de in, a dat jos pe Isus de pe cruce, L-a înfăşurat în pânza de in şi L-a pus într-un mormânt săpat în stâncă. Apoi a prăvălit o piatră la uşa mormântului. 47 Maria Magdalena şi Maria mama lui Iose se uitau unde-L puneau.

Jesus Faces Pilate(A)
15 Immediately, (B)in the morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council; and they bound Jesus, led Him away, and (C)delivered Him to Pilate. 2 (D)Then Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”
He answered and said to him, “It is as you say.”
3 And the chief priests accused Him of many things, but He (E)answered nothing. 4 (F)Then Pilate asked Him again, saying, “Do You answer nothing? See how many things [a]they testify against You!” 5 (G)But Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate marveled.
Taking the Place of Barabbas(H)
6 Now (I)at the feast he was accustomed to releasing one prisoner to them, whomever they requested. 7 And there was one named Barabbas, who was chained with his fellow rebels; they had committed murder in the rebellion. 8 Then the multitude, [b]crying aloud, began to ask him to do just as he had always done for them. 9 But Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” 10 For he knew that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.
11 But (J)the chief priests stirred up the crowd, so that he should rather release Barabbas to them. 12 Pilate answered and said to them again, “What then do you want me to do with Him whom you call the (K)King of the Jews?”
13 So they cried out again, “Crucify Him!”
14 Then Pilate said to them, “Why, (L)what evil has He done?”
But they cried out all the more, “Crucify Him!”
15 (M)So Pilate, wanting to gratify the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and he delivered Jesus, after he had scourged Him, to be (N)crucified.
The Soldiers Mock Jesus(O)
16 (P)Then the soldiers led Him away into the hall called [c]Praetorium, and they called together the whole garrison. 17 And they clothed Him with purple; and they twisted a crown of thorns, put it on His head, 18 and began to salute Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 Then they (Q)struck Him on the head with a reed and spat on Him; and bowing the knee, they worshiped Him. 20 And when they had (R)mocked Him, they took the purple off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him.
The King on a Cross(S)
21 (T)Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was coming out of the country and passing by, to bear His cross. 22 (U)And they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. 23 (V)Then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it. 24 And when they crucified Him, (W)they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take.
25 Now (X)it was the third hour, and they crucified Him. 26 And (Y)the inscription of His [d]accusation was written above:
THE KING OF THE JEWS.
27 (Z)With Him they also crucified two robbers, one on His right and the other on His left. 28 [e]So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, (AA)“And He was numbered with the transgressors.”
29 And (AB)those who passed by blasphemed Him, (AC)wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! (AD)You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, 30 save Yourself, and come down from the cross!”
31 Likewise the chief priests also, (AE)mocking among themselves with the scribes, said, “He saved (AF)others; Himself He cannot save. 32 Let the Christ, the King of Israel, descend now from the cross, that we may see and [f]believe.”
Even (AG)those who were crucified with Him reviled Him.
Jesus Dies on the Cross(AH)
33 Now (AI)when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, (AJ)“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
35 Some of those who stood by, when they heard that, said, “Look, He is calling for Elijah!” 36 Then (AK)someone ran and filled a sponge full of sour wine, put it on a reed, and (AL)offered it to Him to drink, saying, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to take Him down.”
37 (AM)And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and breathed His last.
38 Then (AN)the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 So (AO)when the centurion, who stood opposite Him, saw that [g]He cried out like this and breathed His last, he said, “Truly this Man was the Son of God!”
40 (AP)There were also women looking on (AQ)from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the Less and of Joses, and Salome, 41 who also (AR)followed Him and ministered to Him when He was in Galilee, and many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.
Jesus Buried in Joseph’s Tomb(AS)
42 (AT)Now when evening had come, because it was the Preparation Day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent council member, who (AU)was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, coming and taking courage, went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 Pilate marveled that He was already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him if He had been dead for some time. 45 So when he found out from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. 46 (AV)Then he bought fine linen, took Him down, and wrapped Him in the linen. And he laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. 47 And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses observed where He was laid.

The Message
Standing Before Pilate
15 At dawn’s first light, the high priests, with the religious leaders and scholars, arranged a conference with the entire Jewish Council. After tying Jesus securely, they took him out and presented him to Pilate.
2-3 Pilate asked him, “Are you the ‘King of the Jews’?”
He answered, “If you say so.” The high priests let loose a barrage of accusations.
4-5 Pilate asked again, “Aren’t you going to answer anything? That’s quite a list of accusations.” Still, he said nothing. Pilate was impressed, really impressed.
6-10 It was a custom at the Feast to release a prisoner, anyone the people asked for. There was one prisoner called Barabbas, locked up with the insurrectionists who had committed murder during the uprising against Rome. As the crowd came up and began to present its petition for him to release a prisoner, Pilate anticipated them: “Do you want me to release the King of the Jews to you?” Pilate knew by this time that it was through sheer spite that the high priests had turned Jesus over to him.
11-12 But the high priests by then had worked up the crowd to ask for the release of Barabbas. Pilate came back, “So what do I do with this man you call King of the Jews?”
13 They yelled, “Nail him to a cross!”
14 Pilate objected, “But for what crime?”
But they yelled all the louder, “Nail him to a cross!”
15 Pilate gave the crowd what it wanted, set Barabbas free and turned Jesus over for whipping and crucifixion.
16-20 The soldiers took Jesus into the palace (called Praetorium) and called together the entire brigade. They dressed him up in purple and put a crown plaited from a thornbush on his head. Then they began their mockery: “Bravo, King of the Jews!” They banged on his head with a club, spit on him, and knelt down in mock worship. After they had had their fun, they took off the purple cape and put his own clothes back on him. Then they marched out to nail him to the cross.
The Crucifixion
21 There was a man walking by, coming from work, Simon from Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus. They made him carry Jesus’ cross.
22-24 The soldiers brought Jesus to Golgotha, meaning “Skull Hill.” They offered him a mild painkiller (wine mixed with myrrh), but he wouldn’t take it. And they nailed him to the cross. They divided up his clothes and threw dice to see who would get them.
25-30 They nailed him up at nine o’clock in the morning. The charge against him—the king of the jews—was scrawled across a sign. Along with him, they crucified two criminals, one to his right, the other to his left. People passing along the road jeered, shaking their heads in mock lament: “You bragged that you could tear down the Temple and then rebuild it in three days—so show us your stuff! Save yourself! If you’re really God’s Son, come down from that cross!”
31-32 The high priests, along with the religion scholars, were right there mixing it up with the rest of them, having a great time poking fun at him: “He saved others—but he can’t save himself! Messiah, is he? King of Israel? Then let him climb down from that cross. We’ll all become believers then!” Even the men crucified alongside him joined in the mockery.
33-34 At noon the sky became extremely dark. The darkness lasted three hours. At three o’clock, Jesus groaned out of the depths, crying loudly, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”
35-36 Some of the bystanders who heard him said, “Listen, he’s calling for Elijah.” Someone ran off, soaked a sponge in sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down.”
37-39 But Jesus, with a loud cry, gave his last breath. At that moment the Temple curtain ripped right down the middle. When the Roman captain standing guard in front of him saw that he had quit breathing, he said, “This has to be the Son of God!”
Taken to a Tomb
40-41 There were women watching from a distance, among them Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of the younger James and Joses, and Salome. When Jesus was in Galilee, these women followed and served him, and had come up with him to Jerusalem.
42-45 Late in the afternoon, since it was the Day of Preparation (that is, Sabbath eve), Joseph of Arimathea, a highly respected member of the Jewish Council, came. He was one who lived expectantly, on the lookout for the kingdom of God. Working up his courage, he went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. Pilate questioned whether he could be dead that soon and called for the captain to verify that he was really dead. Assured by the captain, he gave Joseph the corpse.
46-47 Having already purchased a linen shroud, Joseph took him down, wrapped him in the shroud, placed him in a tomb that had been cut into the rock, and rolled a large stone across the opening. Mary Magdalene and Mary, mother of Joses, watched the burial.
