The Crucifixion

²¹^(A)And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. ²²^(B)And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). ²³And they offered him wine mixed with ^(C)myrrh, but he did not take it. ²⁴And they crucified him and ^(D)divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. ²⁵And ^(E)it was the third hour^[a] when they crucified him. ²⁶And the inscription of the charge against him read, ^(F)“The King of the Jews.” ²⁷And with him they crucified two ^(G)robbers, ^(H)one on his right and one on his left.^[b] ²⁹And ^(I)those who passed by derided him, ^(J)wagging their heads and saying, ^(K)“Aha! ^(L)You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, ³⁰save yourself, and come down from the cross!” ³¹So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, ^(M)“He saved others; ^(N)he cannot save himself. ³²Let ^(O)the Christ, ^(P)the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may ^(Q)see and believe.” ^(R)Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.

The Righteous Shall Live by Faith

¹⁰For all who rely on works of the law are ^(A)under a curse; for it is written, ^(B)“Cursed be everyone who does not ^(C)abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” ¹¹Now it is evident that ^(D)no one is justified before God by the law, for ^(E)“The righteous shall live by faith.”^[a] ¹²But the law is not of faith, rather ^(F)“The one who does them shall live by them.” ¹³Christ ^(G)redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, ^(H)“Cursed is everyone who is hanged ^(I)on a tree”— ¹⁴so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might ^(J)come to the Gentiles, so that ^(K)we might receive ^(L)the promised Spirit^[b] through faith.
