²⁶ The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews.^(A)

³⁷ Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews.

¹⁸ There they crucified him, and with him two others^(A)—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.

¹⁹ Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth,^(B) the king of the jews.^{(C) 20} Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city,^(D) and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. ²¹ The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.”^(E)

²² Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

³⁷ and said, “If you are the king of the Jews,^(A) save yourself.”

³⁸ There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews.^(B)

² and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?^(A) We saw his star^(B) when it rose and have come to worship him.”

The Coming of Zion’s King

² “Are you the king of the Jews?”^(A) asked Pilate.

“You have said so,” Jesus replied.
