²³ They offered him wine drugged with myrrh, but he refused it.

³⁴ The soldiers gave Jesus wine mixed with bitter gall, but when he had tasted it, he refused to drink it.

The Death of Jesus

²⁸ Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, “I am thirsty.”^{[a] 29} A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips. ³⁰ When Jesus had tasted it, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

³⁶ The soldiers mocked him, too, by offering him a drink of sour wine.

¹⁸ For I will not drink wine again until the Kingdom of God has come.”

²⁵ I tell you the truth, I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new in the Kingdom of God.”

¹⁹ So the disciples did as Jesus told them and prepared the Passover meal there.
