21 They(A) forced a man coming in from the country, who was passing by, to carry Jesus’s cross.(B) He was Simon of Cyrene,(C) the father of Alexander and Rufus.(D)

22 They(E) brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of the Skull(F)). 23 They tried to give him wine(G) mixed with myrrh,(H) but he did not take it.

24 Then they crucified him and divided his clothes, casting lots(I) for them to decide what each would get. 25 Now it was nine in the morning[a] when they crucified him. 26 The inscription of the charge written against him was: The King(J) of the Jews.(K) 27 They(L) crucified two criminals[b](M) with him, one on his right and one on his left.[c]

29 Those(N) who passed by were yelling insults(O) at[d] him, shaking their heads,(P) and saying, “Ha! The one who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,(Q) 30 save yourself by coming down from the cross!”(R) 31 In the same way, the chief priests with the scribes(S) were mocking him among themselves and saying, “He saved others, but he cannot save himself! 32 Let the Messiah,(T) the King(U) of Israel,(V) come down now from the cross,(W) so that we may see and believe.”(X) Even those who were crucified with him taunted him.

The Death of Jesus

33 When(Y) it was noon,[e] darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.[f](Z) 34 And at three Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lemá sabachtháni?” which is translated, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”[g](AA)

35 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “See, he’s calling for Elijah.”

36 Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, fixed it on a stick, offered him a drink,(AB) and said, “Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down.”

37 Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed his last. 38 Then the curtain(AC) of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 When the centurion, who was standing opposite him, saw the way he[h] breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!” [i](AD)

40 There(AE) were also women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene,(AF) Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. 41 In Galilee(AG) these women followed him and took care of him. Many other women had come up with him to Jerusalem.(AH)

The Time Is Near

Then he said to me, “These words are faithful[a] and true.(A) The Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets,[b] has sent his angel to show his servants what must soon take place.”(B)

“Look, I am coming soon!(C) Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.”(D)

I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. When I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who had shown them to me. But he said to me, “Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you, your brothers the prophets, and those who keep the words of this book. Worship God!” (E)

10 Then he said to me, “Don’t seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, because the time is near.(F) 11 Let the unrighteous go on in unrighteousness; let the filthy still be filthy; let the righteous go on in righteousness; let the holy still be holy.”(G)

12 “Look, I am coming soon, and my reward is with me(H) to repay each person according to his work.(I) 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, (J) the first and the last,(K) the beginning and the end.(L)

14 “Blessed (M) are those who wash their robes,[c] so that they may have the right to the tree of life and may enter the city by the gates. 15 Outside are the dogs, (N) the sorcerers, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.(O)

16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to attest these things to you for the churches. I am the Root(P) and descendant of David,(Q) the bright morning star.”(R)

17 Both the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” Let anyone who hears, say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty come. Let the one who desires take the water of life freely.(S)

18 I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book. 19 And if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share of the tree of life and the holy city, which are written about in this book.(T)

20 He who testifies about these things(U) says, “Yes, I am coming soon.”

Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!(V)

21 The grace of the Lord Jesus[d] be with everyone.[e] Amen.[f]
