The Plot to Kill Jesus(A)

14 Now it was two days before the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread. The high priests and the scribes were looking for a way to arrest Jesus secretly and to have him put to death, 2 because they kept saying, “This must not happen during the festival. Otherwise, there’ll be a riot among the people.”

A Woman Anoints Jesus(B)

3 While Jesus[a] was in Bethany sitting at the table in the home of Simon the leper, a woman arrived with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume made from pure nard. She broke open the jar and poured the perfume on his head. 4 Irritated, some who were there asked one another, “Why was the perfume wasted like this? 5 This perfume could have been sold for more than 300 denarii[b] and the money[c] given to the destitute.” So they got extremely angry with her.

6 But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing for me, 7 because you’ll always have the destitute with you and can help them whenever you want, but you won’t always have me. 8 She has done what she could. She poured perfume on my body in preparation for my burial. 9 I tell all of you[d] with certainty, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told as a memorial to her.”

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus(C)

10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the high priests to betray Jesus[e] to them. 11 After they had listened to him,[f] they were delighted and promised to give him money. So he began to look for a good opportunity to betray him.

The Passover with the Disciples(D)

12 On the first day of the Festival[g] of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, Jesus’[h] disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover meal?”

13 He sent two of his disciples, telling them, “Go into the city, and you will meet a man carrying a jug of water. Follow him. 14 When he goes into a house,[i] say to its owner that the Teacher asks, ‘Where is my room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?’ 15 Then he will show you a large upstairs room that is furnished and ready. Get everything ready for us there.” 16 So the disciples left and went into the city. They found everything just as Jesus[j] had told them, and they prepared the Passover meal.

17 When evening came, Jesus[k] arrived with the Twelve. 18 While they were at the table eating, Jesus said, “I tell all of you[l] with certainty, one of you is going to betray me, one who is eating with me.”

19 They began to be very sad and asked him, one after the other, “Surely I am not the one, am I?”

20 He told them, “It’s one of you Twelve, the one who is dipping his bread into the bowl with me. 21 For the Son of Man is going away, just as it has been written about him, but how terrible it will be for that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for him if he had never been born.”

The Lord’s Supper(E)

22 While they were eating, Jesus[m] took a loaf of bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and handed it to them, saying, “Take some. This is my body.” 23 Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 He told them, “This is my blood of the covenant that is being poured out for many people. 25 I tell all of you[n] with certainty, I’ll never again drink the product of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

26 After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(F)

27 Then Jesus told them, “All of you will turn against me, because it is written,

‘I will strike the shepherd,
    and the sheep will be scattered.’[o]

28 However, after I’ve been raised, I’ll go to Galilee ahead of you.”

29 But Peter told him, “Even if everyone else turns against you, I certainly won’t.”

30 Jesus told him, “I tell you[p] with certainty, today, this very night, before a rooster crows twice, you’ll deny me three times.”

31 But Peter[q] kept saying emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you, I’ll never deny you!” And all the others kept saying the same thing.

Jesus Prays in the Garden of Gethsemane(G)

32 Then they came to a place called Gethsemane, and he told his disciples, “Sit down here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James, and John along with him, and he began to feel distressed and troubled. 34 So he told them, “I’m deeply grieved, even to the point of death. Wait here and stay awake.”

35 Going on a little farther, he fell to the ground and kept praying that if it were possible the hour might pass from him. 36 He kept repeating, “Abba![r] Father! All things are possible for you. Take this cup away from me. Yet not what I want but what you want.”

37 When he went back, he found his disciples[s] asleep. “Simon, are you asleep?” he asked Peter. “You couldn’t stay awake for one hour, could you? 38 All of you must stay awake and pray that you won’t be tempted. The spirit is indeed willing, but the body[t] is weak.”

39 He went away again and prayed the same prayer as before.[u] 40 Again he came back and found them asleep, because they could not keep their eyes open. They didn’t even know what they should say to him.

41 He came back a third time. “Are you still sleeping and resting?”[v] he asked. “Enough of that! The time has come. Look! The Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Get up! Let’s go! See, the one who is betraying me is near!”

Jesus is Arrested(H)

43 Just then, while Jesus[w] was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. A crowd armed with swords and clubs was with him. They were from the high priests, the scribes, and the elders. 44 Now the betrayer personally had given them a signal, saying, “The one I kiss[x] is the man. Arrest him, and lead him safely away.” 45 So Judas[y] immediately went up to Jesus[z] and said, “Rabbi,”[aa] and kissed him tenderly.

46 Then the men[ab] took hold of Jesus[ac] and arrested him. 47 But one of those standing there drew his sword and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his ear. 48 Jesus asked them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me as if I were a bandit?[ad] 49 Day after day I was with you in the Temple teaching, yet you didn’t arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.” 50 Then all the disciples[ae] deserted Jesus[af] and ran away.

The Young Man who Ran Away

51 A certain young man, who was wearing nothing but a linen sheet, was following Jesus.[ag] When the men[ah] grabbed him, 52 he left the linen sheet behind and ran away naked.

Jesus is Tried before the High Priest(I)

53 Then they took Jesus to the high priest. All the high priests, elders, and scribes had gathered together. 54 Peter followed Jesus[ai] at a distance as far as the high priest’s courtyard. He was sitting with the servants and warming himself at the fire. 55 Meanwhile, the high priests and the whole Council[aj] were looking for some testimony against Jesus in order to have him put to death, but they couldn’t find any. 56 Although many people gave false testimony against him, their testimony didn’t agree.

57 Then some men stood up and gave false testimony against him, saying, 58 “We ourselves heard him say, ‘I will destroy this sanctuary made by human[ak] hands, and in three days I will build another one not made by human[al] hands.’” 59 But even on this point their testimony didn’t agree.

60 Then the high priest stood up before them[am] and asked Jesus, “Don’t you have any answer to what these men are testifying against you?” 61 But he kept silent and didn’t answer at all. The high priest asked him again, “Are you the Messiah,[an] the Son of the Blessed One?”

62 Jesus said, “I AM, and

‘you will see the Son of Man
    seated at the right hand of the Power’[ao]
        and ‘coming with the clouds of heaven.’”[ap]

63 Then the high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we still need witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard his blasphemy! What is your verdict?” All of them condemned him as deserving death.

65 Some of them began to spit on him. They blindfolded him and kept hitting him with their fists and telling him, “Prophesy!” Even the servants took him and slapped him around.

Peter Denies Jesus(J)

66 While Peter was down in the courtyard, one of the high priest’s servant girls came by. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself, she glared at him and said, “You, too, were with Jesus from Nazareth.”

68 But he denied it, saying, “I don’t know—or even understand—what you’re talking about!” Then he went out into the entryway. Just then a rooster crowed.[aq]

69 The servant girl saw him and again told those who were standing around, “This man is one of them!” 70 Again he denied it.

After a little while, the people who were standing there began to say to Peter again, “Obviously you’re one of them, because you are a Galilean!”

71 Then he began to invoke a divine curse and to swear with an oath, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about!” 72 Just then a rooster crowed a second time.

Peter remembered that Jesus told him, “Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” Then he broke down and cried.

A consulta dos sacerdotes(A)

14 E, dali a dois dias, era a Páscoa e a Festa dos Pães Asmos; e os principais dos sacerdotes e os escribas buscavam como o prenderiam com dolo e o matariam. 2 Mas eles diziam: Não na festa, para que, porventura, se não faça alvoroço entre o povo.

O jantar em Betânia(B)

3 E, estando ele em Betânia assentado à mesa, em casa de Simão, o leproso, veio uma mulher que trazia um vaso de alabastro, com unguento de nardo puro, de muito preço, e, quebrando o vaso, lho derramou sobre a cabeça. 4 E alguns houve que em si mesmos se indignaram e disseram: Para que se fez este desperdício de unguento? 5 Porque podia vender-se por mais de trezentos dinheiros e dá-lo aos pobres. E bramavam contra ela. 6 Jesus, porém, disse: Deixai-a, para que a molestais? Ela fez-me boa obra. 7 Porque sempre tendes os pobres convosco e podeis fazer-lhes bem, quando quiserdes; mas a mim nem sempre me tendes. 8 Esta fez o que podia; antecipou-se a ungir o meu corpo para a sepultura. 9 Em verdade vos digo que, em todas as partes do mundo onde este evangelho for pregado, também o que ela fez será contado para sua memória.

O preço da traição(C)

10 E Judas Iscariotes, um dos doze, foi ter com os principais dos sacerdotes para lho entregar. 11 E eles, ouvindo-o, alegraram-se e prometeram dar-lhe dinheiro; e buscava como o entregaria em ocasião oportuna.

A última Páscoa. A Santa Ceia(D)

12 E, no primeiro dia da Festa dos Pães Asmos, quando sacrificavam a Páscoa, disseram-lhe os discípulos: Aonde queres que vamos fazer os preparativos para comer a Páscoa? 13 E enviou dois dos seus discípulos e disse-lhes: Ide à cidade, e um homem que leva um cântaro de água vos encontrará; segui-o. 14 E, onde quer que entrar, dizei ao senhor da casa: O Mestre diz: Onde está o aposento em que hei de comer a Páscoa com os meus discípulos? 15 E ele vos mostrará um grande cenáculo mobilado e preparado; preparai-a ali. 16 E, saindo os seus discípulos, foram à cidade, e acharam como lhes tinha dito, e prepararam a Páscoa.

17 E, chegada a tarde, foi com os doze. 18 E, quando estavam assentados a comer, disse Jesus: Em verdade vos digo que um de vós, que comigo come, há de trair-me. 19 E eles começaram a entristecer-se e a dizer-lhe um após outro: Porventura, sou eu, Senhor? E outro: Porventura, sou eu, Senhor? 20 Mas ele, respondendo, disse-lhes: É um dos doze, que mete comigo a mão no prato. 21 Na verdade o Filho do Homem vai, como dele está escrito, mas ai daquele homem por quem o Filho do Homem é traído! Bom seria para o tal homem não haver nascido.

22 E, comendo eles, tomou Jesus pão, e, abençoando-o, o partiu, e deu-lho, e disse: Tomai, comei, isto é o meu corpo. 23 E, tomando o cálice e dando graças, deu-lho; e todos beberam dele. 24 E disse-lhes: Isto é o meu sangue, o sangue do Novo Testamento, que por muitos é derramado. 25 Em verdade vos digo que não beberei mais do fruto da vide, até àquele Dia em que o beber novo, no Reino de Deus. 26 E, tendo cantado o hino, saíram para o monte das Oliveiras.

Pedro é avisado(E)

27 E disse-lhes Jesus: Todos vós esta noite vos escandalizareis em mim, porque escrito está: Ferirei o pastor, e as ovelhas se dispersarão. 28 Mas, depois que eu houver ressuscitado, irei adiante de vós para a Galileia. 29 E disse-lhe Pedro: Ainda que todos se escandalizem, nunca, porém, eu. 30 E disse-lhe Jesus: Em verdade te digo que hoje, nesta noite, antes que o galo cante duas vezes, três vezes me negarás. 31 Mas ele disse com mais veemência: Ainda que me seja necessário morrer contigo, de modo nenhum te negarei. E da mesma maneira diziam todos também.

Jesus no Getsêmani(F)

32 E foram a um lugar chamado Getsêmani, e disse aos seus discípulos: Assentai-vos aqui, enquanto eu oro. 33 E tomou consigo a Pedro, e a Tiago, e a João e começou a ter pavor e a angustiar-se. 34 E disse-lhes: A minha alma está profundamente triste até a morte; ficai aqui e vigiai. 35 E, tendo ido um pouco mais adiante, prostrou-se em terra; e orou para que, se fosse possível, passasse dele aquela hora. 36 E disse: Aba, Pai, todas as coisas te são possíveis; afasta de mim este cálice; não seja, porém, o que eu quero, mas o que tu queres. 37 E, chegando, achou-os dormindo e disse a Pedro: Simão, dormes? Não podes vigiar uma hora? 38 Vigiai e orai, para que não entreis em tentação; o espírito, na verdade, está pronto, mas a carne é fraca. 39 E foi outra vez e orou, dizendo as mesmas palavras. 40 E, voltando, achou-os outra vez dormindo, porque os seus olhos estavam carregados, e não sabiam o que responder-lhe. 41 E voltou terceira vez e disse-lhes: Dormi agora e descansai. Basta; é chegada a hora. Eis que o Filho do Homem vai ser entregue nas mãos dos pecadores. 42 Levantai-vos, vamos; eis que está perto o que me trai.

Jesus é preso(G)

43 E logo, falando ele ainda, veio Judas, que era um dos doze, da parte dos principais dos sacerdotes, e dos escribas, e dos anciãos, e, com ele, uma grande multidão com espadas e porretes. 44 Ora, o que o traía tinha-lhes dado um sinal, dizendo: Aquele que eu beijar, esse é; prendei-o e levai-o com segurança. 45 E, logo que chegou, aproximou-se dele e disse-lhe: Rabi, Rabi. E beijou-o. 46 E lançaram-lhe as mãos e o prenderam. 47 E um dos que ali estavam presentes, puxando da espada, feriu o servo do sumo sacerdote e cortou-lhe uma orelha. 48 E, respondendo Jesus, disse-lhes: Saístes com espadas e porretes a prender-me, como a um salteador? 49 Todos os dias estava convosco ensinando no templo, e não me prendestes; mas isto é para que as Escrituras se cumpram. 50 Então, deixando-o, todos fugiram.

51 E um jovem o seguia, envolto em um lençol sobre o corpo nu. E lançaram-lhe as mãos, 52 mas ele, largando o lençol, fugiu nu.

Jesus perante o Sinédrio(H)

53 E levaram Jesus ao sumo sacerdote, e ajuntaram-se todos os principais dos sacerdotes, e os anciãos, e os escribas. 54 E Pedro o seguiu de longe até dentro do pátio do sumo sacerdote e estava assentado com os servidores, aquentando-se ao lume. 55 E os principais dos sacerdotes e todo o concílio buscavam algum testemunho contra Jesus, para o matar, e não o achavam. 56 Porque muitos testificavam falsamente contra ele, mas os testemunhos não eram coerentes. 57 E, levantando-se alguns, testificavam falsamente contra ele, dizendo: 58 Nós ouvimos-lhe dizer: Eu derribarei este templo, construído por mãos de homens, e em três dias edificarei outro, não feito por mãos de homens. 59 E nem assim o testemunho deles era coerente. 60 E, levantando-se o sumo sacerdote no Sinédrio, perguntou a Jesus, dizendo: Nada respondes? Que testificam estes contra ti? 61 Mas ele calou-se e nada respondeu. O sumo sacerdote lhe tornou a perguntar e disse-lhe: És tu o Cristo, Filho do Deus Bendito? 62 E Jesus disse-lhe: Eu o sou, e vereis o Filho do Homem assentado à direita do Todo-Poderoso e vindo sobre as nuvens do céu. 63 E o sumo sacerdote, rasgando as suas vestes, disse: Para que necessitamos de mais testemunhas? 64 Vós ouvistes a blasfêmia; que vos parece? E todos o consideraram culpado de morte. 65 E alguns começaram a cuspir nele, e a cobrir-lhe o rosto, e a dar-lhe punhadas, e a dizer-lhe: Profetiza. E os servidores davam-lhe bofetadas.

Pedro nega a Jesus(I)

66 E, estando Pedro embaixo, no átrio, chegou uma das criadas do sumo sacerdote; 67 e, vendo a Pedro, que estava se aquentando, olhou para ele e disse: Tu também estavas com Jesus, o Nazareno. 68 Mas ele negou-o, dizendo: Não o conheço, nem sei o que dizes. E saiu fora ao alpendre, e o galo cantou. 69 E a criada, vendo-o outra vez, começou a dizer aos que ali estavam: Este é um dos tais. 70 Mas ele o negou outra vez. E, pouco depois, os que ali estavam disseram outra vez a Pedro: Verdadeiramente, tu és um deles, porque és também galileu. 71 E ele começou a imprecar e a jurar: Não conheço esse homem de quem falais. 72 E o galo cantou segunda vez. E Pedro lembrou-se da palavra que Jesus lhe tinha dito: Antes que o galo cante duas vezes, três vezes me negarás tu. E, retirando-se dali, chorou.

14 Now the Passover(D) and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.(E) 2 “But not during the festival,” they said, “or the people may riot.”

3 While he was in Bethany,(F) reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.(G)

4 Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? 5 It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages[a] and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.

6 “Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7 The poor you will always have with you,[b] and you can help them any time you want.(H) But you will not always have me. 8 She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial.(I) 9 Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world,(J) what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”

10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve,(K) went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them.(L) 11 They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over.

The Last Supper(M)(N)

12 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb,(O) Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”

13 So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 He will show you a large room upstairs,(P) furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”

16 The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.

17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”

19 They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”

20 “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me.(Q) 21 The Son of Man(R) will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”

22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it(S) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”

23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.(T)

24 “This is my blood of the[c] covenant,(U) which is poured out for many,” he said to them. 25 “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”(V)

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(X)

27 “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written:

“‘I will strike the shepherd,
    and the sheep will be scattered.’[d](Y)

28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”(Z)

29 Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”

30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice[e] you yourself will disown me three times.”(AA)

31 But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you,(AB) I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.

Gethsemane(AC)

32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James and John(AD) along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,”(AE) he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”

35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour(AF) might pass from him. 36 “Abba,[f] Father,”(AG) he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup(AH) from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”(AI)

37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(AJ) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”(AK)

39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.

41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour(AL) has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Jesus Arrested(AM)

43 Just as he was speaking, Judas,(AN) one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.

44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!”(AO) and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts,(AP) and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”(AQ) 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.(AR)

51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(AS)(AT)

53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest.(AU) There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.(AV)

55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(AW) were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.

57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another,(AX) not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree.

60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.(AY)

Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”(AZ)

62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”(BA)

63 The high priest tore his clothes.(BB) “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”

They all condemned him as worthy of death.(BC) 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.(BD)

Peter Disowns Jesus(BE)

66 While Peter was below in the courtyard,(BF) one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself,(BG) she looked closely at him.

“You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,”(BH) she said.

68 But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,”(BI) he said, and went out into the entryway.[g]

69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.” 70 Again he denied it.(BJ)

After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”(BK)

71 He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”(BL)

72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time.[h] Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice[i] you will disown me three times.”(BM) And he broke down and wept.
