The Plan to Kill Jesus(A)
14 It was now only two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread [C the annual festival that celebrates God’s rescue of Israel from Egypt; Ex. 12]. The ·leading [T chief] priests and ·teachers of the law [scribes] were trying to find a ·trick [secret way] to arrest Jesus and kill him. 2 But they said, “We must not do it during the feast, because the people might cause a riot.”
A Woman with Perfume for Jesus(B)
3 Jesus was in Bethany at the house of ·Simon, who had a skin disease [L Simon the leper; C for leprosy, see 1:40; Simon may have been healed by Jesus]. While Jesus was ·eating there [L reclining; C the posture for a banquet or dinner party; 2:15], a woman approached him with an alabaster ·jar [vial] filled with very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She ·opened [broke open] the ·jar [vial] and poured the perfume on Jesus’ head.
4 Some who were there became ·upset [indignant] and said to each other, “Why waste that perfume? 5 It was worth ·a full year’s work [L over three hundred denarii]. It could have been sold and the money given to the poor.” And they ·got very angry with [harshly scolded] the woman.
6 Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why are you ·troubling [bothering; criticizing] her? She did an ·excellent thing [beautiful/good deed] for me. 7 You will always have the poor with you, and you can help them anytime you want [Deut. 15:11]. But you will not always have me. 8 This woman did the only thing she could do for me; she ·poured perfume on [anointed] my body to prepare me for burial. 9 I tell you the truth, wherever the ·Good News [Gospel] is preached in all the world, what this woman has done will be told, and people will remember her.”
Judas Betrays Jesus(C)
10 One of ·the twelve apostles [the Twelve], Judas Iscariot, went to talk to the ·leading [T chief] priests to offer to ·hand Jesus over [betray him] to them. 11 These priests were pleased about this and promised to pay Judas money. So he watched for ·the best time [an opportunity] to ·turn Jesus in [betray him].
Jesus Eats the Passover Meal(D)
12 It was now the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread when the Passover lamb was sacrificed. Jesus’ ·followers [disciples] said to him, “Where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover meal?”
13 Jesus sent two of his ·followers [disciples] and said to them, “Go into the city and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 When he goes into a house, tell the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says: “Where is my guest room in which I can eat the Passover meal with my ·followers [disciples]?”’ 15 The owner will show you a large ·room upstairs [T upper room] that is furnished and ready. ·Prepare the food [Make preparations] for us there.”
16 So the ·followers [disciples] left and went into the city. Everything happened as Jesus had said, so they prepared the Passover meal.
17 In the evening, Jesus went to that house with the twelve. 18 While they were all ·eating [L reclining and eating; see v. 3], Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, one of you will ·turn against [betray] me—one of you eating with me now.”
19 The ·followers [disciples] were very ·sad [distressed; pained] to hear this. Each one began to say to Jesus, “·I am not the one, am I [Surely not I; or Is it I]?”
20 Jesus answered, “It is one of the twelve—one who dips his bread into the bowl with me [C probably not a signal, but means “one who shares close fellowship with me”]. 21 The Son of Man will ·die [go to his fate; L go], just as the Scriptures say. But ·how terrible it will be for [L woe to] the person ·who hands the Son of Man over to be killed [L by whom the Son of Man is betrayed]. It would be better for him if he had never been born.”
The Lord’s Supper(E)
22 While they were eating, Jesus took some bread and ·thanked God for [blessed] it and broke it. Then he gave it to his ·followers [disciples] and said, “Take it; this is my body.”
23 Then Jesus took a cup and ·thanked God for it [gave thanks] and gave it to ·the followers [the disciples; them], and they all drank from the cup.
24 Then Jesus said, “This is my blood ·which is the new[a] agreement that God makes with his people [or which confirms/establishes the new covenant; L of the new covenant; Ex. 24:8. Jer. 31:31–34]. This blood is poured out for many [Is. 53:12]. 25 I tell you the truth, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine [C wine] again until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
26 After singing a hymn [C probably the Hallel psalms (Ps. 113—118), sung during the Passover meal], they went out to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus’ Followers Will Leave Him(F)
27 Then Jesus told them, “You will all ·stumble in your faith [fall away; desert me], because it is written in the Scriptures:
‘I will ·kill [strike] the shepherd,
and the sheep will ·scatter [be scattered]’ [Zech. 13:7].
28 But after ·I rise from the dead [L I am raised], I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”
29 Peter said, “Everyone else may ·stumble in their faith [fall away; desert you], but I will not.”
30 Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, tonight before the rooster crows twice you will ·say three times you don’t know me [deny/disown me three times].”
31 But Peter insisted, “Even if I must die with you, I will never ·say that I don’t know [deny/disown] you!” And all the others said the same thing.
Jesus Prays Alone(G)
32 Jesus and his ·followers [disciples] went to a place called Gethsemane. He said to them, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 Jesus took Peter, James, and John with him, and he began to be very ·sad [distressed] and ·troubled [anguished]. 34 He said to them, “My ·heart [soul] is ·full of sorrow [overwhelmed with grief], to the point of death. Stay here and ·watch [stay awake; be alert].”
35 After walking a little farther away from them, Jesus fell [with his face] to the ground and prayed that, if possible, ·he would not have this time of suffering [L the hour might pass him by]. 36 He prayed, “Abba [C Aramaic for “father”], Father! You can do all things. ·Take away this cup of suffering [L Take this cup from me; C suffering is metaphorically portrayed as something bitter to drink; see 10:38]. But do ·what you want [your will], not ·what I want [my will].”
37 Then Jesus went back to his ·followers [disciples] and found them asleep. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn’t you ·stay awake [watch] with me for one hour? 38 ·Stay awake [Keep watch] and pray for strength ·against temptation [or not to fail the test]. The spirit ·wants to do what is right [is willing], but ·the body [human nature; T the flesh] is weak.”
39 Again Jesus went away and prayed the same thing. 40 Then he went back to his ·followers [disciples], and again he found them asleep, because their eyes were very heavy. And they did not know what to say to him.
41 After Jesus prayed a third time, he went back to his ·followers [disciples] and said to them, “·Are you still sleeping and resting? [or Go ahead, sleep and have your rest!] ·That’s enough [It’s all over; The account is settled; C the meaning of this phrase is uncertain]. The time has come for the Son of Man to be ·handed over to [L betrayed/delivered into the hands of] sinful people. 42 Get up, we must go. Look, here comes ·the man who has turned against me [my betrayer].”
Jesus Is Arrested(H)
43 At once, while Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of ·the twelve apostles [the Twelve], came up. With him were many people carrying swords and clubs who had been sent from the ·leading [T chief] priests, the ·teachers of the law [scribes], and the Jewish elders.
44 ·Judas [L The betrayer] had planned a signal for them, saying, “The man I kiss is Jesus. ·Arrest [Seize] him and guard him while you lead him away.” 45 So Judas went straight to Jesus and said, “·Teacher [L Rabbi]!” and kissed him. 46 Then the people grabbed Jesus and arrested him. 47 One of ·his followers [L those] standing nearby pulled out his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.
48 Then Jesus said, “You came to get me with swords and clubs as if I were a ·criminal [revolutionary; rebel; L robber; C the term “robber” was used by the Romans of insurrectionists]. 49 Every day I was with you teaching in the Temple, and you did not arrest me there. But all these things have happened to ·make the Scriptures come true [fulfill the Scriptures].” 50 Then ·all of Jesus’ followers [L everyone] ·left [deserted] him and ·ran away [fled].
51 A young man [C perhaps the author Mark himself], wearing only a linen ·cloth [sheet; shirt], was following Jesus, and the people also grabbed him. 52 But the cloth [sheet; shirt] he was wearing came off, and he ran away naked.
Jesus Before the Leaders(I)
53 The people who arrested Jesus led him to the house of the high priest, where all the ·leading [T chief] priests, the elders, and the ·teachers of the law [scribes] were gathered. 54 Peter followed far behind and entered the courtyard of the high priest’s house. There he sat with the guards, warming himself by the fire.
55 The ·leading [T chief] priests and the whole ·Jewish council [Sanhedrin; C the highest Jewish court] tried to find ·something that Jesus had done wrong [evidence/testimony against him] so they could ·kill [execute] him. But the council could find no proof of anything. 56 Many people came and ·told false things [gave false testimony] about him, but all said different things—none of them agreed.
57 Then some people stood up and ·lied [gave false testimony] about Jesus, saying, 58 “We heard this man say, ‘I will destroy this Temple that people made. And three days later, I will build another Temple not made by people.’” 59 But even ·the things these people said [their testimony] did not agree.
60 Then the high priest stood before them and asked Jesus, “Aren’t you going to answer? ·Don’t you have something to say about their [or What are these] ·charges [testimony] against you?” 61 But Jesus ·said nothing [was silent; Is. 53:7]; he did not answer.
The high priest asked Jesus another question: “Are you the ·Christ [Messiah], the Son of ·the blessed God [L the blessed (one)]?”
62 Jesus answered, “I am. And ·in the future you will see [L you will see] the Son of Man sitting at the right ·side [L hand; see 12:36] of God, the Powerful One, and coming on clouds ·in the sky [of heaven; Ps. 110:1; Dan. 7:13–14].”
63 When the high priest heard this, he tore his clothes [C a sign of sorrow or outrage] and said, “Why do we need more witnesses? 64 You all heard ·him say these things against God [the blasphemy]. What ·do you think [is your verdict]?”
They all said that Jesus was guilty and ·should [deserved to] die. 65 Some of the people there began to spit at Jesus. They blindfolded him and beat him with their fists and said, “·Prophesy! [Prove you are a prophet!]” Then the guards led Jesus away and beat him.
Peter Denies Jesus(J)
66 While Peter was in the courtyard, a servant girl of the high priest came there. 67 She saw Peter warming himself at the fire and looked closely at him.
Then she said, “You also were with Jesus, that man from Nazareth.”
68 But Peter denied it. He said, “I don’t know or understand what you are talking about.” Then Peter left and went toward the entrance of the courtyard. And the rooster crowed.[b]
69 The servant girl saw Peter there, and again she said to the people who were standing nearby, “This man is one of those who followed Jesus.” 70 Again Peter ·said that it was not true [denied it].
A short time later, some people were standing near Peter saying, “Surely you are one of those who followed Jesus, because you are from Galilee, too [C Peter’s Galilean accent gave him away; Matt. 26:73].”
71 Then Peter began to place a curse on himself and swear, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about!”
72 At once, the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered what Jesus had told him: “Before the rooster crows twice, you will ·say three times that you don’t know me [deny/disown me three times].” Then Peter broke down and began to cry.

De religiösa ledarna planerar att döda Jesus
14 Två dagar senare började påskfirandet - en årlig festvecka då judarna helt avstår från att äta bröd som bakats med jäst. Översteprästerna och de andra judiska ledarna sökte fortfarande efter ett tillfälle att i hemlighet arrestera Jesus och döda honom.
2 Men vi kan inte göra det under festdagarna, sa de, för då kommer det att bli oroligheter.
En kvinna smörjer Jesus med dyrbar olja
3 Under tiden var Jesus i Betania, i Simon den leprasjukes hus. Under kvällsmåltiden kom en kvinna dit med en flaska fylld med välluktande och dyrbar olja. Hon bröt sönder flaskan och hällde oljan över hans huvud.
4-5 Några av gästerna vid bordet förargade sig över detta 'slöseri
6 Men Jesus sa: Lämna henne i fred! Varför kritiserar ni henne? Det hon har gjort mot mig är rätt och riktigt.
7 Fattiga, som verkligen behöver er hjälp, kommer det alltid att finnas ibland er. Dem kan ni hjälpa när ni vill. Men jag däremot kommer inte att vara här länge till.
8 Denna kvinna har gjort vad hon kunde. Hon har i förväg smort min kropp med olja inför min begravning.
9 Och jag kan försäkra er att överallt i världen där de goda nyheterna förkunnas, där kommer man också att tala om denna kvinna och vad hon gjorde.
Judas går med på att förråda Jesus
10 Då gick Judas Iskariot, en av hans lärjungar, till översteprästerna för att förråda Jesus.
11 När översteprästerna hörde varför han hade kommit blev de ivriga och glada och lovade honom pengar. Och han började från och med nu att söka efter lämplig tid och plats för att förråda Jesus.
Lärjungarna gör i ordning påskmåltiden
12 På första dagen i påskfirandet, den dag då lammen slaktades, frågade lärjungarna Jesus var han hade tänkt sig att de skulle äta den traditionella påskmåltiden.
13 Han sände då två av dem till Jerusalem för att ordna med måltiden.När ni kommer dit, sa han till dem, kommer ni att möta en man som bär en vattenkruka. Följ efter honom.
14 Säg sedan till den man som äger huset där han går in: 'Vår Mästare skickade hit oss för att se på det rum, som du har gjort i ordning åt oss och där vi ska äta påskmåltiden i kväll.'
15 Han kommer att visa er till ett stort rum en trappa upp där det är dukat. Laga till vår måltid där.
16 De två lärjungarna gick då i förväg till staden och fann allt vara som Jesus hade sagt, och de gjorde i ordning påskmåltiden.
Jesus och hans lärjungar äter den sista måltiden
17 På kvällen kom Jesus dit med de andra lärjungarna.
18 Medan de åt sa Jesus till dem: Jag har något allvarligt att säga er. En av er kommer att förråda mig, en av er som nu äter här vid bordet.
19 Alla blev bestörta och såg på varandra, och en efter en frågade de Jesus: Är det jag?
20 Han svarade: Det är en av er tolv, en som doppar sitt brödstycke i samma skål som jag.
21 Människosonen måste nämligen dö, precis som profeterna för länge sedan sagt, men stackars den som förråder mig! Det hade varit bättre om han aldrig hade blivit född!
22 Medan de åt tog Jesus en bit bröd och bad Gud välsigna det. Sedan bröt han det i bitar och gav åt dem och sa: Ät detta. Det är min kropp.
23 Sedan tog han en bägare vin och tackade Gud för den och gav den till lärjungarna, och alla drack ur den.
24 Och han sa till dem: Detta är mitt blod, som ges ut för många och bekräftar det nya förbundet mellan Gud och människor.
25 Jag försäkrar er att jag från och med nu inte kommer att dricka vin förrän den dag då jag dricker det nya vinet i Guds rike.
Jesus förutsäger att Petrus ska svika honom
26 Sedan de sjungit en lovsång tillsammans gick de ut till Oljeberget.
27 Ni kommer att svika mig allesammans, sa Jesus till dem, för genom profeterna har Gud sagt: 'Jag ska döda herden och fåren kommer att skingras åt alla håll.'
28 Men sedan jag uppstått till livet igen kommer jag att gå före er till Galileen och möta er där.
29 Då sa Petrus: Även om alla de andra sviker dig kommer inte jag att göra det!
30 Petrus, sa Jesus, innan tuppen har galit två gånger i morgon bitti, kommer du att ha förnekat mig tre gånger.
31 Nej! utropade Petrus. Inte ens om jag måste dö med dig! Jag kommer aldrig att förneka dig! Och alla de andra sa detsamma.
Jesus ber i Getsemane
32 De kom så till en olivlund, som kallades Getsemane, och Jesus sa till lärjungarna: Sätt er här medan jag går bort och ber.
33 Han tog med sig Petrus, Jakob och Johannes, och han greps av fasa och djup ångest.
34 Och han sa till dem: Jag är nära att bryta samman under den börda jag måste bära. Stanna kvar hos mig och lämna mig inte ensam.
35 Han gick lite längre bort och föll på knä, och han bad att den fruktansvärda stund som väntade honom om möjligt aldrig skulle behöva komma.
36 Far, bad han, allt är möjligt för dig. Bevara mig från detta lidande. Men jag vill att din vilja ska ske och inte min.
37 Sedan kom han tillbaka till de tre lärjungarna och fann att de sov.Simon, sa han till Petrus, sover du? Kunde du inte hålla dig vaken en enda timme?
38 Vaka och be, annars kan Frestaren övermanna er. Ni vill gärna göra ert bästa, men i er själva är ni svaga.
39 Så gick han bort igen och bad till Gud med samma ord.
40 När han sedan kom tillbaka till de tre lärjungarna fann han att de sov igen. De kunde inte ens hålla ögonen öppna, och de visste inte vad de skulle säga.
41 När han kom tillbaka till dem för tredje gången sa han: Sover ni fortfarande och vilar er? Men nu är det dags! Tiden är inne! Nu ska jag överlämnas i onda människors händer.
42 Res er upp! Vi måste gå. Här kommer den som förråder mig!
Jesus blir förrådd och arresterad
43 Just när han sa detta kom Judas (en av hans lärjungar) med en folkhop beväpnad med svärd och klubbor och utsänd av översteprästerna och andra judiska ledare.
44 Judas hade kommit överens med dem och sagt: Mannen som jag ger en hälsningskyss ska ni gripa. Han är det.
45 Så snart de hade kommit dit gick han fram till Jesus. Mästare, ropade han och omfamnade honom och gav honom en hälsningskyss.
46 Då grep folkhopen Jesus och höll fast honom.
47 Men en av lärjungarna drog ett svärd och högg av örat på en av översteprästernas tjänare.
48 Jesus frågade dem: Jag måste vara en farlig brottsling eftersom ni kommer på det här viset, beväpnade till tänderna för att gripa mig?
49 Varför arresterade ni mig inte i templet? Dag efter dag har jag undervisat där utan att ni har rört mig. Men detta sker för att profetiorna om mig ska uppfyllas.
50 Livrädda övergav nu alla lärjungarna honom och flydde.
51-52 Men en ung man som följt med Jesus stod lite på avstånd. Han var klädd i bara ett linneskynke, och när man försökte att gripa honom tappade han skynket och sprang därifrån fullständigt naken.
Jesus förhörs av översteprästen Kajafas
53 De förde nu Jesus till översteprästens hus, där översteprästerna och många andra judiska ledare snart samlades.
54 Petrus följde efter på avstånd och kom in på gården till översteprästens palats. Där satte han sig ner vid elden bland tjänarna.
55 Inne i huset försökte översteprästerna och hela den judiska högsta domstolen hitta en anklagelse som skulle vara tillräcklig för att döma Jesus till döden. Men de fann ingen.
56 Många vittnade falskt, men de motsa varandra hela tiden.
57 Till sist förklarade några män:
58 Vi har hört denne Jesus påstå: 'Jag ska riva ner detta tempel, som byggts av människor, och på tre dagar ska jag bygga upp ett annat utan någon hjälp av människor!'
59 Men inte heller på denna punkt stämde deras berättelser överens!
60 Då reste sig översteprästen upp inför domstolen och sa till Jesus: Vad svarar du på det? Har du sagt det eller inte?
61 Men Jesus teg.Då frågade översteprästen honom: Är du Messias, Guds Son?
62 Ja, det är jag, svarade Jesus, och du ska få se Människosonen sitta på Guds högra sida och återvända till jorden på himlens skyar.
63-64 Då rev översteprästen sönder sina kläder och skrek: Det räcker. Vi behöver inga fler vittnen. Ni har själva hört hans hädelse. Vad röstar ni för? Då röstade alla för att han skulle dömas till döden.
65 Sedan började några som stod där att spotta på honom, och de band för hans ögon så att han inte kunde se och började slå honom i ansiktet med knytnävarna.Profetera nu och säg vem det var som slog dig den här gången, hånade de honom. Till och med vakterna använde knytnävarna mot honom när de ledde bort honom.
Petrus förnekar att han känner Jesus
66-67 Under tiden väntade Petrus på gårdsplanen. En av tjänsteflickorna, som arbetade hos översteprästen, lade märke till Petrus, som satt och värmde sig vid elden. Hon stirrade ett ögonblick på honom och sa sedan: Du var också tillsammans med Jesus, nasarén!
68 Petrus nekade till det: Jag vet inte vad du talar om! utbrast han och gick bort till andra sidan av gårdsplanen. Just då gol tuppen.
69 Flickan såg honom stå där och sa då högt till de andra: Där är han! Han är en lärjunge till Jesus!
70 Men Petrus nekade ännu en gång.Lite senare sa några andra, som stod runt elden, till Petrus: Visst är du en av hans vänner? Man hör på dig att du kommer från Galileen.
71 Då började han svära och förbanna: Jag känner inte den där karln, som ni talar om! skrek han.
72 Just då gol tuppen för andra gången, och i samma ögonblick for Jesu ord genom Petrus hjärna: Innan tuppen gal två gånger ska du förneka mig tre gånger. Och han började gråta.

14 Now the Passover(D) and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.(E) 2 “But not during the festival,” they said, “or the people may riot.”
3 While he was in Bethany,(F) reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.(G)
4 Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? 5 It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages[a] and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.
6 “Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7 The poor you will always have with you,[b] and you can help them any time you want.(H) But you will not always have me. 8 She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial.(I) 9 Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world,(J) what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”
10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve,(K) went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them.(L) 11 They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over.
The Last Supper(M)(N)
12 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb,(O) Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”
13 So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 He will show you a large room upstairs,(P) furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”
16 The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.
17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”
19 They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”
20 “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me.(Q) 21 The Son of Man(R) will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it(S) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”
23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.(T)
24 “This is my blood of the[c] covenant,(U) which is poured out for many,” he said to them. 25 “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”(V)
26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.(W)
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(X)
27 “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written:
28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”(Z)
29 Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”
30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice[e] you yourself will disown me three times.”(AA)
31 But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you,(AB) I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.
Gethsemane(AC)
32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James and John(AD) along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,”(AE) he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”
35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour(AF) might pass from him. 36 “Abba,[f] Father,”(AG) he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup(AH) from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”(AI)
37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(AJ) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”(AK)
39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.
41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour(AL) has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
Jesus Arrested(AM)
43 Just as he was speaking, Judas,(AN) one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.
44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!”(AO) and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts,(AP) and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”(AQ) 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.(AR)
51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.
Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(AS)(AT)
53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest.(AU) There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.(AV)
55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(AW) were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.
57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another,(AX) not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree.
60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.(AY)
Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”(AZ)
62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”(BA)
63 The high priest tore his clothes.(BB) “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”
They all condemned him as worthy of death.(BC) 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.(BD)
Peter Disowns Jesus(BE)
66 While Peter was below in the courtyard,(BF) one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself,(BG) she looked closely at him.
“You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,”(BH) she said.
68 But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,”(BI) he said, and went out into the entryway.[g]
69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.” 70 Again he denied it.(BJ)
After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”(BK)
71 He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”(BL)
72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time.[h] Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice[i] you will disown me three times.”(BM) And he broke down and wept.
