³⁷ He came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep awake one hour?

⁴⁰ Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “So, could you not stay awake with me one hour?^(A)

³ Consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinners,^[a] so that you may not grow weary in your souls or lose heart.^(A)

⁴⁵ When he got up from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping because of grief, ⁴⁶ and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not come into the time of trial.”^[a](A)

³¹ They appeared in glory and were speaking about his exodus, which he was about to fulfill in Jerusalem.^{(A) 32} Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep, but as they awoke they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him.^(B)

⁴⁰ And once more he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they did not know what to say to him. ⁴¹ He came a third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Enough! The hour has come; the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.^(A)

²⁹ Peter said to him, “Even though all fall away,^[a] I will not.”^{(A) 30} Jesus said to him, “Truly I tell you, this day, this very night, before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times.”^{(B) 31} But he said vehemently, “Even though I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And all of them said the same.

⁵ As the bridegroom was delayed, all of them became drowsy and slept.^(A)

¹⁷ Absalom said to Hushai, “Is this your loyalty to your friend? Why did you not go with your friend?”^(A)

⁶ So, then, let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober,^{(A) 7} for those who sleep sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night.^{(B) 8} But since we belong to the day, let us be sober and put on the breastplate of faith and love and for a helmet the hope of salvation.^(C)
