² for they said, “Not during the festival, or there may be a riot among the people.”

¹⁹ The Pharisees then said to one another, “You see, you can do nothing. Look, the world has gone after him!”^(A)

Division among the People

⁴⁰ When they heard these words, some in the crowd said, “This is really the prophet.”

⁶ But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ all the people will stone us, for they are convinced that John was a prophet.”^(A)

³² But shall we say, ‘Of human origin’?”—they were afraid of the crowd, for all regarded John as truly a prophet.^(A)

¹⁸ And when the chief priests and the scribes heard it, they kept looking for a way to kill him, for they were afraid of him because the whole crowd was spellbound by his teaching.^(A)
