^17 (A)When it was evening He *came with the twelve. ¹⁸ And as they were reclining at the table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly I say to you that one of you will ^[a]betray Me—^[b]one who is eating with Me.” ¹⁹ They began to be grieved and to say to Him one by one, “Surely not I?” ²⁰ But He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, the one who dips bread with Me in the bowl. ²¹ For the Son of Man is going away just as it is written about Him; but woe to that man ^[c]by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good ^[d]for that man if he had not been born.”

The Last Passover

^20 (A)Now when evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the ^[a]twelve. ²¹ And as they were eating, He said, “^(B)Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me.” ²² Being deeply grieved, they began saying to Him, each one: “Surely it is not I, Lord?” ²³ And He answered, “^(C)He who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl is the one who will betray Me. ²⁴ The Son of Man is going away ^(D)just as it is written about Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! ^(E)It would have been good ^[b]for that man if he had not been born.”

The Lord’s Supper

^14 (A)When the hour came, He reclined at the table, and ^(B)the apostles with Him.

^21 (A)But behold, the hand of the one betraying Me is with ^[a]Mine on the table. ²² For indeed, the Son of Man is going ^(B)as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!” ²³ And they began to debate among themselves which one of them it was who was going to do this.

^18 (A)I am not speaking about all of you. I know the ones whom I have ^(B)chosen; but this is happening ^(C)so that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘^(D)He who eats My bread has lifted up his heel against Me.’ ¹⁹ From now on ^(E)I am telling you before it happens, so that when it does happen, you may believe that ^(F)I am He. ²⁰ Truly, truly I say to you, ^(G)the one who ^[a]receives anyone I send, ^[b]receives Me; and the one who ^[c]receives Me ^[d]receives Him who sent Me.”

Jesus Predicts His Betrayal

²¹ When Jesus had said these things, He ^(H)became troubled in spirit, and ^[e]testified and said, “Truly, truly I say to you that ^(I)one of you will ^[f]betray Me.” ²² The disciples began looking at one another, ^(J)at a loss to know of which one He was speaking. ²³ Lying back on ^(K)Jesus’ chest was one of His disciples, ^(L)whom Jesus loved. ²⁴ So Simon Peter *nodded to this disciple and *said to him, “Tell us who it is of whom He is speaking.” ²⁵ He then simply ^(M)leaned back on Jesus’ chest and *said to Him, “Lord, who is it?” ²⁶ Jesus then *answered, “That man is the one for whom I shall dip the piece of bread and give it to him.” So when He had dipped the piece of bread, He *took and *gave it to Judas, ^(N)the son of Simon Iscariot. ²⁷ After ^[g]this, ^(O)Satan then ^(P)entered him. Therefore Jesus *said to him, “What you are doing, do it quickly.” ²⁸ Now none of those reclining at the table knew for what purpose He had said this to him. ²⁹ For some were assuming, since Judas ^(Q)kept the money box, that Jesus was saying to him, “Buy the things we need ^(R)for the feast”; or else, that he was to ^[h](S)give something to the poor. ³⁰ So after receiving the piece of bread, he left immediately; and ^(T)it was night.

³¹ Therefore when he had left, Jesus *said, “Now ^[i]is ^(U)the Son of Man ^(V)glorified, and ^(W)God ^[j]is glorified in Him; ^32 [k]if God is glorified in Him, ^(X)God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately. ^33 (Y)Little children, I am still with you ^(Z)a little longer. ^(AA)You will look for Me; and just as I said to the ^[l]Jews, now I also say to you: ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’ ³⁴ I am giving you a ^(AB)new commandment, ^(AC)that you love one another; ^(AD)just as I have loved you, that you also love one another. ^35 (AE)By this all people will know that you are My disciples: if you have love for one another.”

³⁶ Simon Peter *said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered, “^(AF)Where I am going, you cannot follow Me now; but ^(AG)you will follow later.” ³⁷ Peter *said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You right now? ^(AH)I will lay down my life for You.” ³⁸ Jesus *replied, “Will you lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly I say to you, ^(AI)a rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times.
