¹¹ When they heard it, they were greatly pleased and promised to give him money. So he began to look for an opportunity to betray him.

¹⁰ For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains.

¹¹ Woe to them! For they go the way of Cain and abandon themselves to Balaam’s error for the sake of gain and perish in Korah’s rebellion.^(A)

¹⁴ They have eyes full of adultery,^[a] insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children! ¹⁵ They have left the straight road and have gone astray, following the road of Balaam son of Bosor,^[b] who loved the wages of doing wrong^(A)

⁵ They were greatly pleased and agreed to give him money.^{(A) 6} So he consented and began to look for an opportunity to betray him to them when no crowd was present.

¹⁵ and said, “What will you give me if I betray him to you?” They paid him thirty pieces of silver.^(A)

²⁶ But he said to him, “Did I not go with you in spirit when someone left his chariot to meet you? Is this a time to accept silver and to accept clothing, olive orchards and vineyards, sheep and oxen, and male and female slaves?^(A)
