38 (A)And in His teaching He was saying: “Beware of the scribes who like to walk around in long robes, and like (B)personal greetings in the marketplaces, 39 and seats of honor in the synagogues, and places of honor at banquets, 40 (C)who devour widows’ houses, and for appearance’s sake offer long prayers. These will receive all the more condemnation.”

38 As he taught, he said, “Beware of the scribes! They like to walk around in long robes, to be greeted in the marketplaces, 39 and to have the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. 40 They devour widows’ houses[a] and say long prayers to cover it up. They will receive greater condemnation!”
