⁹ “Therefore what will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the vinedressers, and give the vineyard to others.

²⁰ But Isaiah is very bold and says:

Israel’s Rejection Not Total

11 I say then, ^(C)has God cast away His people? ^(D)Certainly not! For ^(E)I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. ² God has not cast away His people whom ^(F)He foreknew. Or do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel, saying, ^3 (G)“Lord, they have killed Your prophets and torn down Your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life”? ⁴ But what does the divine response say to him? ^(H)“I have reserved for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” ^5 (I)Even so then, at this present time there is a remnant according to the election of grace. ⁶ And ^(J)if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace. ^[a]But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work.

⁷ What then? ^(K)Israel has not obtained what it seeks; but the elect have obtained it, and the rest were ^(L)blinded. ⁸ Just as it is written:

¹¹ I say then, have they stumbled that they should fall? Certainly not! But ^(P)through their ^[b]fall, to provoke them to ^(Q)jealousy, salvation has come to the Gentiles. ¹² Now if their ^[c]fall is riches for the world, and their failure riches for the Gentiles, how much more their fullness!

Present Condition of Israel

³⁰ What shall we say then? ^(A)That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have attained to righteousness, ^(B)even the righteousness of faith; ³¹ but Israel, ^(C)pursuing the law of righteousness, ^(D)has not attained to the law ^[a]of righteousness. ³² Why? Because they did not seek it by faith, but as it were, ^[b]by the works of the law. For ^(E)they stumbled at that stumbling stone. ³³ As it is written:

²⁷ But bring here those enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, and slay them before me.’ ”

⁴³ “Therefore I say to you, ^(A)the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation bearing the fruits of it.

²³ So when they had appointed him a day, many came to him at his lodging, ^(A)to whom he explained and solemnly testified of the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus ^(B)from both the Law of Moses and the Prophets, from morning till evening. ²⁴ And ^(C)some were persuaded by the things which were spoken, and some disbelieved. ²⁵ So when they did not agree among themselves, they departed after Paul had said one word: “The Holy Spirit spoke rightly through Isaiah the prophet to ^[a]our fathers, ²⁶ saying,

²⁸ “Therefore let it be known to you that the salvation of God has been sent ^(E)to the Gentiles, and they will hear it!”

⁴⁶ Then Paul and Barnabas grew bold and said, ^(A)“It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first; but ^(B)since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, behold, ^(C)we turn to the Gentiles. ⁴⁷ For so the Lord has commanded us:

⁴⁸ Now when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord. ^(E)And as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed.

¹⁵ So they cast him out of the vineyard and ^(A)killed him. Therefore what will the owner of the vineyard do to them? ¹⁶ He will come and destroy those vinedressers and give the vineyard to ^(B)others.”

And when they heard it they said, “Certainly not!”

Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem

⁴¹ Now as He drew near, He saw the city and ^(A)wept over it, ⁴² saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this ^(B)your day, the things that ^(C)make for your ^(D)peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. ⁴³ For days will come upon you when your enemies will ^(E)build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, ^44 (F)and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and ^(G)they will not leave in you one stone upon another, ^(H)because you did not know the time of your visitation.”
