15 They came to Jerusalem, and Jesus entered into the temple, and began to throw out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and overthrew the money changers’ tables, and the seats of those who sold the doves. 16 He would not allow anyone to carry a container through the temple. 17 He taught, saying to them, “Isn’t it written, ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations?’Isaiah 56:7 But you have made it a den of robbers!”Jeremiah 7:11

18 The chief priests and the scribes heard it, and sought how they might destroy him. For they feared him, because all the multitude was astonished at his teaching.

19 When evening came, he went out of the city.

The Cleansing of the Temple

15 And they came to Jerusalem. And he entered into the temple courts[a] and[b] began to drive out those who were selling and those who were buying in the temple courts,[c] and overturned the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those who were selling doves. 16 And he did not permit anyone to carry objects[d] through the temple courts.[e] 17 And he began to teach[f] and was saying to them, “Is it not written,

‘My house will be called a house of prayer
    for all the nations,’[g]

but you have made it a cave of robbers!” 18 And the chief priests and the scribes heard it,[h] and began considering[i] how they could destroy him. For they were afraid of him because the whole crowd was astounded by his teaching. 19 And when evening came they went out of the city.
