Jesus Drives Merchants from the Temple

15 (A)Then they *came to Jerusalem. And He entered the temple and began to drive out those who were buying and selling in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling [a]doves; 16 and He was not permitting anyone to carry [b]merchandise through the temple. 17 And He began to teach and say to them, “Is it not written, ‘(B)My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? (C)But you have made it a robbers[c]den.” 18 And the chief priests and the scribes heard this, and (D)began seeking how to destroy Him; for they were afraid of Him, for (E)the whole crowd was astonished at His teaching.

19 (F)And when evening came, [d]they were going out of the city.

Cleansing the Temple Complex

15 They came to Jerusalem,(A) and He went into the temple complex(B) and began to throw out those buying and selling in the temple. He overturned the money changers’(C) tables and the chairs of those selling doves, 16 and would not permit anyone to carry goods through the temple complex.

17 Then He began to teach them: “Is it not written,(D) My house(E) will be called a house of prayer(F) for all nations?[a] But you have made it a den of thieves!”(G)[b] 18 Then the chief priests and the scribes(H) heard it and started looking for a way to destroy Him. For they were afraid(I) of Him, because the whole crowd was astonished by His teaching.

19 And whenever evening came, they would go out of the city.
