Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(A)(B)
11 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany(C) at the Mount of Olives,(D) Jesus sent two of his disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden.(E) Untie it and bring it here. 3 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’”
4 They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway.(F) As they untied it, 5 some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” 6 They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. 7 When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. 8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. 9 Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,
“Hosanna![a]”
10 “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!”
“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”(H)
11 Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.(I)
Jesus Curses a Fig Tree and Clears the Temple Courts(J)(K)(L)
12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs.(M) 14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.
15 On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, 16 and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. 17 And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’[c]?(N) But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’[d]”(O)
18 The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him,(P) because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.(Q)
19 When evening came, Jesus and his disciples[e] went out of the city.(R)
20 In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. 21 Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi,(S) look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!”
22 “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. 23 “Truly[f] I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.(T) 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.(U) 25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”(V) [26] [g]
The Authority of Jesus Questioned(W)
27 They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him. 28 “By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you authority to do this?”
29 Jesus replied, “I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 30 John’s baptism—was it from heaven, or of human origin? Tell me!”
31 They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ 32 But if we say, ‘Of human origin’ …” (They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.)(X)
33 So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”
Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”
The Parable of the Tenants(Y)
12 Jesus then began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard.(Z) He put a wall around it, dug a pit for the winepress and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place. 2 At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. 3 But they seized him, beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 4 Then he sent another servant to them; they struck this man on the head and treated him shamefully. 5 He sent still another, and that one they killed. He sent many others; some of them they beat, others they killed.
6 “He had one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all,(AA) saying, ‘They will respect my son.’
7 “But the tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ 8 So they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.
9 “What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others. 10 Haven’t you read this passage of Scripture:
“‘The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;(AB)
11 the Lord has done this,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’[h]?”(AC)
12 Then the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders looked for a way to arrest him because they knew he had spoken the parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd;(AD) so they left him and went away.(AE)
Paying the Imperial Tax to Caesar(AF)
13 Later they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians(AG) to Jesus to catch him(AH) in his words. 14 They came to him and said, “Teacher, we know that you are a man of integrity. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay the imperial tax[i] to Caesar or not? 15 Should we pay or shouldn’t we?”
But Jesus knew their hypocrisy. “Why are you trying to trap me?” he asked. “Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.” 16 They brought the coin, and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?”
“Caesar’s,” they replied.
17 Then Jesus said to them, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.”(AI)
And they were amazed at him.
Marriage at the Resurrection(AJ)
18 Then the Sadducees,(AK) who say there is no resurrection,(AL) came to him with a question. 19 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.(AM) 20 Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died without leaving any children. 21 The second one married the widow, but he also died, leaving no child. It was the same with the third. 22 In fact, none of the seven left any children. Last of all, the woman died too. 23 At the resurrection[j] whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?”
24 Jesus replied, “Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures(AN) or the power of God? 25 When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.(AO) 26 Now about the dead rising—have you not read in the Book of Moses, in the account of the burning bush, how God said to him, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’[k]?(AP) 27 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!”
The Greatest Commandment(AQ)
28 One of the teachers of the law(AR) came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”
29 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.[l] 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’[m](AS) 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[n](AT) There is no commandment greater than these.”
32 “Well said, teacher,” the man replied. “You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him.(AU) 33 To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”(AV)
34 When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.”(AW) And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions.(AX)
Whose Son Is the Messiah?(AY)(AZ)
35 While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts,(BA) he asked, “Why do the teachers of the law say that the Messiah is the son of David?(BB) 36 David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit,(BC) declared:
37 David himself calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”
The large crowd(BE) listened to him with delight.
Warning Against the Teachers of the Law
38 As he taught, Jesus said, “Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, 39 and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.(BF) 40 They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”
The Widow’s Offering(BG)
41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put(BH) and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.
43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”(BI)
The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times(BJ)
13 As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!”
2 “Do you see all these great buildings?” replied Jesus. “Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”(BK)
3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives(BL) opposite the temple, Peter, James, John(BM) and Andrew asked him privately, 4 “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?”
5 Jesus said to them: “Watch out that no one deceives you.(BN) 6 Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many. 7 When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 8 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.
9 “You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues.(BO) On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. 10 And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. 11 Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.(BP)
12 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death.(BQ) 13 Everyone will hate you because of me,(BR) but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(BS)
14 “When you see ‘the abomination that causes desolation’[p](BT) standing where it[q] does not belong—let the reader understand—then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 15 Let no one on the housetop go down or enter the house to take anything out. 16 Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. 17 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!(BU) 18 Pray that this will not take place in winter, 19 because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world,(BV) until now—and never to be equaled again.(BW)
20 “If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them. 21 At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it.(BX) 22 For false messiahs and false prophets(BY) will appear and perform signs and wonders(BZ) to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 23 So be on your guard;(CA) I have told you everything ahead of time.
24 “But in those days, following that distress,
“‘the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light;
25 the stars will fall from the sky,
and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’[r](CB)
26 “At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds(CC) with great power and glory. 27 And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.(CD)
28 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 29 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it[s] is near, right at the door. 30 Truly I tell you, this generation(CE) will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.(CF) 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.(CG)
The Day and Hour Unknown
32 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.(CH) 33 Be on guard! Be alert[t]!(CI) You do not know when that time will come. 34 It’s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants(CJ) in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.
35 “Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. 36 If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. 37 What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’”(CK)
Jesus Anointed at Bethany(CL)(CM)(CN)
14 Now the Passover(CO) and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.(CP) 2 “But not during the festival,” they said, “or the people may riot.”
3 While he was in Bethany,(CQ) reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.(CR)
4 Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? 5 It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages[u] and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.
6 “Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7 The poor you will always have with you,[v] and you can help them any time you want.(CS) But you will not always have me. 8 She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial.(CT) 9 Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world,(CU) what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”
10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve,(CV) went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them.(CW) 11 They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over.
The Last Supper(CX)(CY)
12 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb,(CZ) Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”
13 So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 He will show you a large room upstairs,(DA) furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”
16 The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.
17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”
19 They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”
20 “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me.(DB) 21 The Son of Man(DC) will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it(DD) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”
23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.(DE)
24 “This is my blood of the[w] covenant,(DF) which is poured out for many,” he said to them. 25 “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”(DG)
26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.(DH)
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(DI)
27 “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written:
28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”(DK)
29 Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”
30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice[y] you yourself will disown me three times.”(DL)
31 But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you,(DM) I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.
Gethsemane(DN)
32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James and John(DO) along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,”(DP) he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”
35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour(DQ) might pass from him. 36 “Abba,[z] Father,”(DR) he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup(DS) from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”(DT)
37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(DU) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”(DV)
39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.
41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour(DW) has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
Jesus Arrested(DX)
43 Just as he was speaking, Judas,(DY) one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.
44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!”(DZ) and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts,(EA) and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”(EB) 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.(EC)
51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.
Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(ED)(EE)
53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest.(EF) There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.(EG)
55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(EH) were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.
57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another,(EI) not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree.
60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.(EJ)
Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”(EK)
62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”(EL)
63 The high priest tore his clothes.(EM) “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”
They all condemned him as worthy of death.(EN) 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.(EO)
Peter Disowns Jesus(EP)
66 While Peter was below in the courtyard,(EQ) one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself,(ER) she looked closely at him.
“You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,”(ES) she said.
68 But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,”(ET) he said, and went out into the entryway.[aa]
69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.” 70 Again he denied it.(EU)
After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”(EV)
71 He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”(EW)
72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time.[ab] Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice[ac] you will disown me three times.”(EX) And he broke down and wept.
Jesus Before Pilate(EY)
15 Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law(EZ) and the whole Sanhedrin,(FA) made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.(FB)
2 “Are you the king of the Jews?”(FC) asked Pilate.
“You have said so,” Jesus replied.
3 The chief priests accused him of many things. 4 So again Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.”
5 But Jesus still made no reply,(FD) and Pilate was amazed.
6 Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested. 7 A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. 8 The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.
9 “Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?”(FE) asked Pilate, 10 knowing it was out of self-interest that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas(FF) instead.
12 “What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked them.
13 “Crucify him!” they shouted.
14 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.
But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
15 Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged,(FG) and handed him over to be crucified.
The Soldiers Mock Jesus(FH)
16 The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace(FI) (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. 17 They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. 18 And they began to call out to him, “Hail, king of the Jews!”(FJ) 19 Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out(FK) to crucify him.
The Crucifixion of Jesus(FL)
21 A certain man from Cyrene,(FM) Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus,(FN) was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.(FO) 22 They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). 23 Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh,(FP) but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots(FQ) to see what each would get.
25 It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. 26 The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews.(FR)
27 They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. [28] [ad] 29 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads(FS) and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,(FT) 30 come down from the cross and save yourself!” 31 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him(FU) among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! 32 Let this Messiah,(FV) this king of Israel,(FW) come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
The Death of Jesus(FX)
33 At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.(FY) 34 And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[ae](FZ)
35 When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”
36 Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar,(GA) put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said.
37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.(GB)
38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.(GC) 39 And when the centurion,(GD) who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died,[af] he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”(GE)
40 Some women were watching from a distance.(GF) Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph,[ag] and Salome.(GG) 41 In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.(GH)
The Burial of Jesus(GI)
42 It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath).(GJ) So as evening approached, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council,(GK) who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God,(GL) went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. 45 When he learned from the centurion(GM) that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. 46 So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Jesus entra em Jerusalém(A)
11 Quando Jesus e os discípulos estavam chegando a Jerusalém, foram até o monte das Oliveiras, que fica perto dos povoados de Betfagé e Betânia. Então Jesus enviou dois discípulos na frente, 2 com a seguinte ordem:
— Vão até o povoado que fica ali adiante. Logo que vocês entrarem lá, encontrarão preso um jumentinho que ainda não foi montado. Desamarrem o animal e o tragam aqui. 3 Se alguém perguntar por que vocês estão fazendo isso, digam que o Mestre precisa dele, mas o devolverá logo.
4 Eles foram e acharam o jumentinho na rua, amarrado perto da porta de uma casa. Quando estavam desamarrando o animal, 5 algumas pessoas que estavam ali perguntaram:
— O que é que vocês estão fazendo? Por que estão desamarrando o jumentinho?
6 Eles responderam como Jesus havia mandado, e então aquelas pessoas deixaram que os dois discípulos levassem o animal. 7 Eles levaram o jumentinho a Jesus e puseram as suas capas sobre o animal. Em seguida, Jesus o montou. 8 Muitas pessoas estenderam as suas capas no caminho, e outras espalharam no caminho ramos que tinham cortado nos campos. 9 Tanto os que iam na frente como os que vinham atrás começaram a gritar:
— Hosana a Deus!
Que Deus abençoe aquele que vem
em nome do Senhor!
10 Que Deus abençoe o Reino de Davi,

11 Jesus entrou em Jerusalém, foi até o Templo e olhou tudo em redor. Mas, como já era tarde, foi para o povoado de Betânia com os doze discípulos.
Jesus e a figueira(B)
12 No dia seguinte, quando eles estavam voltando de Betânia, Jesus teve fome. 13 Viu de longe uma figueira cheia de folhas e foi até lá para ver se havia figos. Quando chegou perto, encontrou somente folhas porque não era tempo de figos. 14 Então disse à figueira:
— Que nunca mais ninguém coma das suas frutas!
E os seus discípulos ouviram isso.
Jesus no Templo(C)
15 Quando Jesus e os discípulos chegaram a Jerusalém, ele entrou no pátio do Templo e começou a expulsar todos os que compravam e vendiam naquele lugar. Derrubou as mesas dos que trocavam dinheiro e as cadeiras dos que vendiam pombas. 16 E não deixava ninguém atravessar o pátio do Templo carregando coisas. 17 E ele ensinava a todos assim:
— Nas Escrituras Sagradas está escrito que Deus disse o seguinte: “A minha casa será chamada de ‘Casa de Oração’ para todos os povos.” Mas vocês a transformaram num esconderijo de ladrões!
18 Os chefes dos sacerdotes e os mestres da Lei ouviram isso e começaram a procurar um jeito de matar Jesus. Mas tinham medo dele porque o povo admirava os seus ensinamentos.
19 De tardinha, Jesus e os discípulos saíram da cidade.
A lição da figueira(D)
20 No dia seguinte, de manhã cedo, Jesus e os discípulos passaram perto da figueira e viram que ela estava seca desde a raiz. 21 Então Pedro lembrou do que havia acontecido e disse a Jesus:
— Olhe, Mestre! A figueira que o senhor amaldiçoou ficou seca.
22 Jesus respondeu:
— Tenham fé em Deus. 23 Eu afirmo a vocês que isto é verdade: vocês poderão dizer a este monte: “Levante-se e jogue-se no mar.” Se não duvidarem no seu coração, mas crerem que vai acontecer o que disseram, então isso será feito. 24 Por isso eu afirmo a vocês: quando vocês orarem e pedirem alguma coisa, creiam que já a receberam, e assim tudo lhes será dado. 25 E, quando estiverem orando, perdoem os que os ofenderam, para que o Pai de vocês, que está no céu, perdoe as ofensas de vocês. 26 [Se não perdoarem os outros, o Pai de vocês, que está no céu, também não perdoará as ofensas de vocês.]
A autoridade de Jesus(E)
27 Depois voltaram para Jerusalém. Quando Jesus estava andando pelo pátio do Templo, chegaram perto dele os chefes dos sacerdotes, os mestres da Lei e os líderes dos judeus que estavam ali 28 e perguntaram:
— Com que autoridade você faz essas coisas? Quem lhe deu autoridade para fazer isso?
29 Jesus respondeu:
— Eu também vou fazer uma pergunta a vocês. Se me derem a resposta certa, eu direi com que autoridade faço essas coisas. 30 Respondam: quem deu autoridade a João para batizar? Foi Deus ou foram pessoas?
31 Aí eles começaram a dizer uns aos outros:
— Se dissermos que foi Deus, ele vai perguntar: “Então por que vocês não creram em João?” 32 Mas, se dissermos que foram pessoas, ai de nós!
Eles estavam com medo do povo, pois todos achavam que, de fato, João era profeta. 33 Por isso responderam:
— Não sabemos.
— Então eu também não digo com que autoridade faço essas coisas! — disse Jesus.
Os lavradores maus(F)
12 Depois Jesus começou a falar por meio de parábolas. Ele disse:
— Certo homem fez uma plantação de uvas e pôs uma cerca em volta dela. Construiu um tanque para pisar as uvas e fazer vinho e construiu uma torre para o vigia. Em seguida, arrendou a plantação para alguns lavradores e foi viajar. 2 Quando chegou o tempo da colheita, o dono enviou um empregado para receber a sua parte. 3 Mas os lavradores agarraram o empregado, bateram nele e o mandaram de volta sem nada. 4 O dono mandou mais um empregado, mas eles bateram na cabeça dele e o trataram de um modo vergonhoso. 5 E ainda outro foi mandado para lá, mas os lavradores o mataram. E o mesmo aconteceu com muitos mais — uns foram surrados, e outros foram mortos. 6 E agora a única pessoa que o dono da plantação tinha para mandar lá era o seu querido filho. Finalmente ele o mandou, pensando assim: “O meu filho eles vão respeitar.” 7 Mas os lavradores disseram uns aos outros: “Este é o filho do dono; ele vai herdar a plantação. Vamos matá-lo, e a plantação será nossa.”
8 — Então agarraram o filho, e o mataram, e jogaram o corpo para fora da plantação.
9 Aí Jesus perguntou:
— E agora, o que é que o dono da plantação vai fazer? Ele virá, matará aqueles homens e entregará a plantação a outros lavradores. 10 Vocês não leram o que as Escrituras Sagradas dizem?
“A pedra que os construtores rejeitaram
veio a ser a mais importante de todas.
11 Isso foi feito pelo Senhor
e é uma coisa maravilhosa!”
12 Os líderes judeus sabiam que a parábola era contra eles e quiseram prender Jesus, mas tinham medo do povo. Por isso deixaram Jesus em paz e foram embora.
A pergunta sobre os impostos(G)
13 Depois mandaram que alguns fariseus e alguns membros do partido de Herodes fossem falar com Jesus a fim de conseguirem alguma prova contra ele. 14 Eles chegaram e disseram:
— Mestre, sabemos que o senhor é honesto e não se importa com a opinião dos outros. O senhor não julga pela aparência, mas ensina a verdade sobre a maneira de viver que Deus exige. Diga: é ou não é contra a nossa Lei pagar impostos ao Imperador romano? Devemos pagar ou não?
15 Mas Jesus percebeu a malícia deles e respondeu:
— Por que é que vocês estão procurando uma prova contra mim? Tragam uma moeda para eu ver.
16 Eles trouxeram, e ele perguntou:
— De quem são o nome e a cara que estão gravados nesta moeda?
Eles responderam:
— São do Imperador.
17 Então Jesus disse:
— Deem ao Imperador o que é do Imperador e deem a Deus o que é de Deus.
E eles ficaram admirados com Jesus.
A pergunta sobre a ressurreição(H)
18 Alguns saduceus, os quais afirmam que ninguém ressuscita, chegaram perto de Jesus e disseram:
19 — Mestre, Moisés escreveu para nós a seguinte lei: “Se um homem morrer e deixar a esposa sem filhos, o irmão dele deve casar com a viúva, para terem filhos, que serão considerados filhos do irmão que morreu.” 20 Acontece que havia sete irmãos. O mais velho casou e morreu sem deixar filhos. 21 O segundo casou com a viúva e morreu sem deixar filhos. Aconteceu a mesma coisa com o terceiro. 22 Afinal, os sete irmãos casaram com a mesma mulher e morreram sem deixar filhos. Depois de todos eles, a mulher também morreu. 23 Portanto, no dia da ressurreição, quando todos os mortos tornarem a viver, de qual dos sete a mulher vai ser esposa? Pois todos eles casaram com ela!
24 Jesus respondeu:
— Como vocês estão errados, não conhecendo nem as Escrituras Sagradas nem o poder de Deus. 25 Pois, quando os mortos ressuscitarem, serão como os anjos do céu, e ninguém casará. 26 Vocês nunca leram no Livro de Moisés o que está escrito sobre a ressurreição? Quando fala do espinheiro que estava em fogo, está escrito que Deus disse a Moisés: “Eu sou o Deus de Abraão, o Deus de Isaque e o Deus de Jacó.” 27 E Deus não é Deus dos mortos e sim dos vivos. Vocês estão completamente errados!
O mandamento mais importante(I)
28 Um mestre da Lei que estava ali ouviu a discussão. Viu que Jesus tinha dado uma boa resposta e por isso perguntou:
— Qual é o mais importante de todos os mandamentos da Lei?
29 Jesus respondeu:
— É este: “Escute, povo de Israel! O Senhor, nosso Deus, é o único Senhor. 30 Ame o Senhor, seu Deus, com todo o coração, com toda a alma, com toda a mente e com todas as forças.” 31 E o segundo mais importante é este: “Ame os outros como você ama a você mesmo.” Não existe outro mandamento mais importante do que esses dois.
32 Então o mestre da Lei disse a Jesus:
— Muito bem, Mestre! O senhor disse a verdade. Ele é o único Deus, e não existe outro além dele. 33 Devemos amar a Deus com todo o nosso coração, com toda a nossa mente e com todas as nossas forças e também devemos amar os outros como amamos a nós mesmos. Pois é melhor obedecer a estes dois mandamentos do que trazer animais para serem queimados no altar e oferecer outros sacrifícios a Deus.
34 Jesus viu que o mestre da Lei tinha respondido com sabedoria e disse:
— Você não está longe do Reino de Deus.
Depois disso ninguém tinha coragem de fazer mais perguntas a Jesus.
A pergunta sobre o Messias(J)
35 Quando Jesus estava ensinando no pátio do Templo, perguntou:
— Como podem os mestres da Lei ensinar que o Messias é descendente de Davi? 36 Pois Davi, inspirado pelo Espírito Santo, escreveu:
“O Senhor Deus disse ao meu Senhor:
‘Sente-se do meu lado direito,
até que eu ponha os seus inimigos
debaixo dos seus pés.’ ”
37 O próprio Davi chama o Messias de Senhor. Portanto, como é que o Messias pode ser descendente de Davi?
Jesus e os mestres da Lei(K)
Uma grande multidão escutava com prazer o que Jesus ensinava. 38 Ele dizia ao povo:
— Cuidado com os mestres da Lei! Eles gostam de andar para lá e para cá, usando capas compridas, e gostam de ser cumprimentados com respeito nas praças; 39 preferem os lugares de honra nas sinagogas e os melhores lugares nos banquetes. 40 Exploram as viúvas e roubam os seus bens; e, para disfarçarem, fazem orações compridas. Portanto, o castigo que eles vão sofrer será pior ainda!
A oferta da viúva pobre(L)
41 Jesus estava no pátio do Templo, sentado perto da caixa das ofertas, olhando com atenção as pessoas que punham dinheiro ali. Muitos ricos davam muito dinheiro. 42 Então chegou uma viúva pobre e pôs na caixa duas moedinhas de pouco valor. 43 Aí Jesus chamou os discípulos e disse:
— Eu afirmo a vocês que isto é verdade: esta viúva pobre deu mais do que todos. 44 Porque os outros deram do que estava sobrando. Porém ela, que é tão pobre, deu tudo o que tinha para viver.
Jesus fala da destruição do Templo(M)
13 Quando Jesus estava saindo do pátio do Templo, um discípulo disse:
— Mestre, veja que pedras e edifícios impressionantes!
2 Jesus respondeu:
— Você está vendo estes enormes edifícios? Pois aqui não ficará uma pedra em cima da outra; tudo será destruído!
Perseguições e sofrimentos(N)
3 Jesus estava sentado no monte das Oliveiras, olhando para o Templo, quando Pedro, Tiago, João e André lhe perguntaram em particular:
4 — Conte para nós quando é que isso vai acontecer. Que sinal haverá para mostrar quando é que todas essas coisas vão começar?
5 Então Jesus começou a ensiná-los. Ele disse:
— Tomem cuidado para que ninguém engane vocês. 6 Porque muitos vão aparecer fingindo ser eu e dizendo: “Eu sou o Messias!” E enganarão muitas pessoas. 7 Não tenham medo quando ouvirem o barulho de batalhas ou notícias de guerras. Tudo isso vai acontecer, mas ainda não será o fim. 8 Uma nação vai guerrear contra outra, e um país atacará outro. Em vários lugares haverá tremores de terra e falta de alimentos. Essas coisas serão como as primeiras dores de parto.
9 — Vocês precisam ter cuidado porque serão presos e levados aos tribunais e serão chicoteados nas sinagogas. Por serem meus seguidores, vocês serão levados aos governadores e reis para serem julgados e falarão a eles sobre o evangelho. 10 Pois, antes de chegar o fim, o evangelho precisa ser anunciado a todos os povos. 11 Quando prenderem e entregarem vocês às autoridades, não fiquem preocupados, antes da hora, com o que irão dizer. Quando chegar o momento, digam o que Deus lhes der para dizer. Porque as palavras que disserem não serão de vocês mesmos, mas virão do Espírito Santo. 12 Muitos entregarão os seus próprios irmãos para serem mortos, e os pais entregarão os filhos. E os filhos ficarão contra os pais e os matarão. 13 Todos odiarão vocês por serem meus seguidores, mas quem ficar firme até o fim será salvo.
O grande sofrimento(O)
14 E Jesus continuou:
— Vocês verão “o grande terror” no lugar onde não deveria estar. (Que o leitor entenda o que isso quer dizer!) Então, os que estiverem na região da Judeia, que fujam para os montes. 15 Quem estiver em cima da sua casa, no terraço, que fuja logo e não entre para pegar nada. 16 E quem estiver no campo, que não volte para casa a fim de buscar as suas roupas. 17 Ai das mulheres grávidas e das mães com criancinhas naqueles dias! 18 Orem a Deus para que isso não aconteça no inverno. 19 Porque naqueles dias haverá um sofrimento tão grande como nunca houve desde que Deus criou o mundo; e nunca mais acontecerá uma coisa igual. 20 Porém o Senhor diminuiu esse tempo de sofrimento. Se não fosse assim, ninguém seria salvo. Mas, por causa do povo que Deus escolheu para salvar, esse tempo já foi diminuído.
21 — Portanto, se alguém disser para vocês: “Vejam! O Messias está aqui” ou “O Messias está ali”, não acreditem. 22 Porque aparecerão falsos profetas e falsos messias, que farão milagres e maravilhas para enganar, se possível, até o povo escolhido de Deus. 23 Prestem atenção! Eu estou lhes dizendo tudo isso, antes que aconteça.
A vinda do Filho do Homem(P)
24 Jesus disse:
— Depois daqueles dias de sofrimento, o sol ficará escuro, e a lua não brilhará mais. 25 As estrelas cairão do céu, e os poderes do espaço serão abalados. 26 Então o Filho do Homem aparecerá descendo nas nuvens, com grande poder e glória. 27 Ele mandará os anjos aos quatro cantos da terra e reunirá os escolhidos de Deus de um lado do mundo até o outro.
A lição da figueira(Q)
28 Jesus disse ainda:
— Aprendam a lição que a figueira ensina. Quando os seus ramos ficam verdes, e as folhas começam a brotar, vocês sabem que está chegando o verão. 29 Assim também, quando virem acontecer essas coisas, fiquem sabendo que o tempo está perto, pronto para começar. 30 Eu afirmo a vocês que isto é verdade: essas coisas vão acontecer antes de morrerem todos os que agora estão vivos. 31 O céu e a terra desaparecerão, mas as minhas palavras ficarão para sempre.
O dia e a hora(R)
32 E Jesus terminou, dizendo:
— Mas ninguém sabe nem o dia nem a hora em que tudo isso vai acontecer, nem os anjos do céu, nem o Filho, mas somente o Pai. 33 Vigiem e fiquem alertas, pois vocês não sabem quando chegará a hora. 34 Será como um homem que sai de casa e viaja para longe; mas, antes de ir, dá ordens, distribui o trabalho entre os empregados e manda o porteiro ficar de vigia. 35 Então vigiem, pois vocês não sabem quando o dono da casa vai voltar; se será à tarde, ou à meia-noite, ou de madrugada, ou de manhã. 36 Se ele chegar de repente, que não encontre vocês dormindo! 37 O que eu lhes digo digo a todos: fiquem vigiando!
O plano para matar Jesus(S)
14 Faltavam dois dias para a Festa da Páscoa e a Festa dos Pães sem Fermento. Os chefes dos sacerdotes e os mestres da Lei procuravam um jeito de prender Jesus em segredo e matá-lo. 2 Eles diziam:
— Não vamos fazer isso durante a festa, para não haver uma revolta no meio do povo.
Jesus em Betânia(T)
3 Jesus estava no povoado de Betânia, sentado à mesa na casa de Simão, o Leproso. Então uma mulher chegou com um frasco feito de alabastro, cheio de perfume de nardo puro, muito caro. Ela quebrou o gargalo do frasco e derramou o perfume na cabeça de Jesus. 4 Alguns que estavam ali ficaram zangados e disseram uns aos outros:
— Que desperdício! 5 Esse perfume poderia ter sido vendido por mais de trezentas moedas de prata, que poderiam ser dadas aos pobres.
Eles criticavam a mulher com dureza, 6 mas Jesus disse:
— Deixem esta mulher em paz! Por que é que vocês a estão aborrecendo? Ela fez para mim uma coisa muito boa. 7 Pois os pobres estarão sempre com vocês, e, em qualquer ocasião que vocês quiserem, poderão ajudá-los. Mas eu não estarei sempre com vocês. 8 Ela fez tudo o que pôde, pois antes da minha morte veio perfumar o meu corpo para o meu sepultamento. 9 Eu afirmo a vocês que isto é verdade: em qualquer lugar do mundo onde o evangelho for anunciado, será contado o que ela fez, e ela será lembrada.
Judas trai Jesus(U)
10 Judas Iscariotes, que era um dos doze discípulos, foi falar com os chefes dos sacerdotes para combinar como entregaria Jesus a eles. 11 Quando ouviram o que ele disse, eles ficaram muito contentes e prometeram dar dinheiro a ele. Assim Judas começou a procurar uma oportunidade para entregar Jesus.
Jesus comemora a Páscoa(V)
12 No primeiro dia da Festa dos Pães sem Fermento, em que os judeus matavam carneirinhos para comemorarem a Páscoa, os discípulos perguntaram a Jesus:
— Onde é que o senhor quer que a gente prepare o jantar da Páscoa para o senhor?
13 Então Jesus enviou dois discípulos com a seguinte ordem:
— Vão até a cidade. Lá irá se encontrar com vocês um homem que estará carregando um pote de água. Vão atrás desse homem 14 e digam ao dono da casa em que ele entrar que o Mestre manda perguntar: “Onde fica a sala em que eu e os meus discípulos vamos comer o jantar da Páscoa?” 15 Então ele mostrará a vocês no andar de cima uma sala grande, mobiliada e arrumada para o jantar. Preparem ali tudo para nós.
16 Os dois discípulos foram até a cidade e encontraram tudo como Jesus tinha dito. Então prepararam o jantar da Páscoa.
17 Quando anoiteceu, Jesus chegou com os doze discípulos. 18 Enquanto estavam à mesa, no meio do jantar, ele disse:
— Eu afirmo a vocês que isto é verdade: um de vocês, que está comendo comigo, vai me trair.
19 Eles ficaram tristes e, um por um, começaram a perguntar:
— O senhor não está achando que sou eu, está?
20 Jesus respondeu:
— É um de vocês. É o que está comendo no mesmo prato que eu. 21 Pois o Filho do Homem vai morrer da maneira como dizem as Escrituras Sagradas; mas ai daquele que está traindo o Filho do Homem! Seria melhor para ele nunca ter nascido!
A Ceia do Senhor(W)
22 Enquanto estavam comendo, Jesus pegou o pão e deu graças a Deus. Depois partiu o pão e o deu aos discípulos, dizendo:
— Peguem; isto é o meu corpo.
23 Em seguida, pegou o cálice de vinho e agradeceu a Deus. Depois passou o cálice aos discípulos, e todos beberam do vinho. 24 Então Jesus disse:
— Isto é o meu sangue, que é derramado em favor de muitos, o sangue que garante a aliança feita por Deus com o seu povo. 25 Eu afirmo a vocês que isto é verdade: nunca mais beberei deste vinho até o dia em que beber com vocês um vinho novo no Reino de Deus.
26 Então eles cantaram canções de louvor e foram para o monte das Oliveiras.
Jesus avisa Pedro(X)
27 E Jesus disse aos discípulos:
— Todos vocês vão fugir e me abandonar, pois as Escrituras Sagradas dizem: “Matarei o pastor, e as ovelhas serão espalhadas.” 28 Mas, depois que eu for ressuscitado, irei adiante de vocês para a Galileia.
29 Então Pedro disse a Jesus:
— Eu nunca abandonarei o senhor, mesmo que todos o abandonem!
30 Mas Jesus lhe disse:
— Eu afirmo a você que isto é verdade: nesta mesma noite, antes que o galo cante duas vezes, você dirá três vezes que não me conhece.
31 Mas Pedro repetia com insistência:
— Eu nunca vou dizer que não o conheço, mesmo que eu tenha de morrer com o senhor!
E todos os outros discípulos disseram a mesma coisa.
Jesus no jardim do Getsêmani(Y)
32 Jesus e os discípulos foram a um lugar chamado Getsêmani. E Jesus lhes disse:
— Sentem-se aqui, enquanto eu vou orar.
33 Então Jesus foi, levando consigo Pedro, Tiago e João. Aí ele começou a sentir uma grande tristeza e aflição 34 e disse a eles:
— A tristeza que estou sentindo é tão grande, que é capaz de me matar. Fiquem aqui vigiando.
35 Ele foi um pouco mais adiante, ajoelhou-se, encostou o rosto no chão e pediu a Deus que, se possível, afastasse dele aquela hora de sofrimento. 36 Ele orava assim:
— Pai, meu Pai, tu podes fazer todas as coisas! Afasta de mim este cálice de sofrimento. Porém que não seja feito o que eu quero, mas o que tu queres.
37 Depois voltou e encontrou os três discípulos dormindo. Então disse a Pedro:
— Simão, você está dormindo? Será que não pode vigiar nem uma hora? 38 Vigiem e orem para que não sejam tentados. É fácil querer resistir à tentação; o difícil mesmo é conseguir.
39 Jesus foi outra vez e orou, dizendo as mesmas palavras. 40 Em seguida, voltou ao lugar onde os discípulos estavam e os encontrou de novo dormindo. Eles estavam com muito sono e não conseguiam ficar com os olhos abertos. E não sabiam o que responder a Jesus.
41 Quando voltou pela terceira vez, Jesus perguntou:
— Vocês ainda estão dormindo e descansando? Basta! Chegou a hora, e o Filho do Homem está sendo entregue nas mãos dos maus. 42 Levantem-se, e vamos embora. Vejam! Aí vem chegando o homem que está me traindo!
Jesus é preso(Z)
43 Jesus ainda estava falando, quando chegou Judas, um dos doze discípulos. Vinha com ele uma multidão armada com espadas e porretes, que tinha sido mandada pelos chefes dos sacerdotes, pelos mestres da Lei e pelos líderes judeus. 44 O traidor tinha combinado com eles um sinal. Ele tinha dito: “Prendam e levem bem seguro o homem que eu beijar, pois é ele.”
45 Logo que chegou perto de Jesus, Judas disse:
— Mestre!
E o beijou. 46 Então eles pegaram Jesus e o prenderam. 47 Mas um dos que estavam ali tirou a espada, atacou um empregado do Grande Sacerdote e cortou uma orelha dele. 48 Então Jesus disse para aquela gente:
— Vocês vêm com espadas e porretes para me prenderem como se eu fosse um bandido? 49 Eu estava com vocês todos os dias, ensinando no pátio do Templo, e vocês não me prenderam. Mas isso está acontecendo para se cumprir o que as Escrituras Sagradas dizem.
50 Então todos os discípulos abandonaram Jesus e fugiram.
51 Um jovem, enrolado num lençol, seguia Jesus. Alguns tentaram prendê-lo, 52 mas ele largou o lençol e fugiu nu.
Jesus diante do Conselho Superior(AA)
53 Em seguida, levaram Jesus até a casa do Grande Sacerdote, onde estavam reunidos os chefes dos sacerdotes, alguns líderes dos judeus e alguns mestres da Lei.
54 Pedro seguiu Jesus de longe e entrou no pátio da casa do Grande Sacerdote. Ele sentou-se perto do fogo, com os guardas, para se esquentar. 55 Os chefes dos sacerdotes e todo o Conselho Superior estavam procurando encontrar alguma acusação contra Jesus a fim de o condenarem à morte. Mas não conseguiram nenhuma. 56 Muitos diziam mentiras contra ele, mas as suas histórias não combinavam umas com as outras.
57 Alguns se levantaram e acusaram Jesus com mentiras. Eles diziam:
58 — Nós ouvimos quando ele disse: “Vou destruir este Templo que foi construído por seres humanos e, em três dias, levantarei outro que não será construído por seres humanos.”
59 Mesmo assim as suas histórias não combinavam umas com as outras.
60 Aí o Grande Sacerdote se levantou no meio de todos e perguntou a Jesus:
— Você não vai se defender dessa acusação?
61 Mas Jesus ficou calado e não respondeu nada. Então o Grande Sacerdote tornou a perguntar:
— Você é o Messias, o Filho do Deus Bendito?
62 Jesus respondeu:
— Sou. E vocês verão o Filho do Homem sentado do lado direito do Deus Todo-Poderoso e descendo com as nuvens do céu!
63 Aí o Grande Sacerdote rasgou as suas próprias roupas e disse:
— Não precisamos mais de testemunhas! 64 Vocês ouviram esta blasfêmia contra Deus! Então, o que resolvem?
Todos estavam contra Jesus e aí o condenaram à morte.
65 Então alguns começaram a cuspir nele. Cobriam o rosto dele, davam bofetadas nele e perguntavam:
— Quem foi que bateu em você? Adivinhe!
E também os guardas o pegaram e lhe deram bofetadas.
Pedro nega Jesus(AB)
66 Pedro ainda estava lá embaixo no pátio, quando apareceu uma das empregadas do Grande Sacerdote. 67 Ela viu Pedro se esquentando perto do fogo, olhou bem para ele e disse:
— Você também estava com Jesus de Nazaré.
68 Mas ele negou, dizendo:
— Eu não o conheço. Não sei do que é que você está falando.
E saiu para o corredor. Naquele momento, o galo cantou. 69 Quando a empregada viu Pedro ali, começou a dizer aos que estavam perto:
— Este homem é um deles.
70 Mas ele negou outra vez. Pouco depois, as pessoas que estavam ali disseram de novo a Pedro:
— Não há dúvida de que você é um deles, pois você também é da Galileia.
71 Aí Pedro disse:
— Juro que não conheço esse homem de quem vocês estão falando! Que Deus me castigue se não estou dizendo a verdade!
72 Naquele instante o galo cantou pela segunda vez, e Pedro lembrou que Jesus lhe tinha dito: “Antes que o galo cante duas vezes, você dirá três vezes que não me conhece.” Então Pedro caiu em si e começou a chorar.
Jesus diante de Pilatos(AC)
15 Assim que amanheceu, os chefes dos sacerdotes se reuniram com os líderes dos judeus, e com os mestres da Lei, e com todo o Conselho Superior e fizeram os seus planos. Eles amarraram Jesus, e o levaram, e entregaram a Pilatos. 2 Pilatos perguntou:
— Você é o rei dos judeus?
— Quem está dizendo isso é o senhor! — respondeu Jesus.
3 E os chefes dos sacerdotes faziam muitas acusações contra ele. 4 Então Pilatos fez outra pergunta:
— Você não vai responder? Veja quantas acusações estão fazendo contra você!
5 Porém Jesus não disse mais nada, e Pilatos ficou muito admirado com isso.
Jesus é condenado à morte(AD)
6 Em toda Festa da Páscoa, o Governador costumava soltar um dos presos, a pedido do povo. 7 Naquela ocasião um homem chamado Barrabás estava preso na cadeia junto com alguns homens que tinham matado algumas pessoas numa revolta. 8 A multidão veio e começou a pedir que, como era o costume, Pilatos soltasse um preso. 9 Então ele perguntou:
— Vocês querem que eu solte para vocês o rei dos judeus?
10 Ele sabia muito bem que os chefes dos sacerdotes tinham inveja de Jesus e que era por isso que o haviam entregado a ele. 11 Mas os chefes dos sacerdotes atiçaram o povo para que pedisse a Pilatos que, em vez de soltar Jesus, ele soltasse Barrabás. 12 Pilatos falou outra vez com o povo. Ele perguntou:
— O que vocês querem que eu faça com este homem que vocês chamam de rei dos judeus?
13 E eles gritaram:
— Crucifica!
14 — Que crime ele cometeu? — perguntou Pilatos.
Mas eles gritaram ainda mais alto:
— Crucifica! Crucifica!
15 Então Pilatos, querendo agradar o povo, soltou Barrabás, como eles haviam pedido. Depois mandou chicotear Jesus e o entregou para ser crucificado.
Os soldados zombam de Jesus(AE)
16 Aí os soldados levaram Jesus para o pátio interno do Palácio do Governador e reuniram toda a tropa. 17 Depois vestiram em Jesus uma capa vermelha e puseram na cabeça dele uma coroa feita de ramos cheios de espinhos. 18 E começaram a saudá-lo, dizendo:
— Viva o Rei dos Judeus!
19 Batiam na cabeça dele com um bastão, cuspiam nele e se ajoelhavam, fingindo que o estavam adorando. 20 Depois de terem caçoado dele, tiraram a capa vermelha e o vestiram com as suas próprias roupas. Em seguida o levaram para fora a fim de o crucificarem.
A crucificação de Jesus(AF)
21 No caminho, os soldados encontraram um homem chamado Simão, que vinha do campo para a cidade. Esse Simão, o pai de Alexandre e Rufo, era da cidade de Cirene. Os soldados obrigaram Simão a carregar a cruz de Jesus 22 e levaram Jesus para um lugar chamado Gólgota. (Gólgota quer dizer “Lugar da Caveira”.) 23 Queriam dar a ele vinho misturado com um calmante chamado mirra, mas ele não bebeu. 24 Em seguida os soldados o crucificaram e repartiram as suas roupas entre si, tirando a sorte com dados, para ver qual seria a parte de cada um. 25 Eram nove horas da manhã quando crucificaram Jesus. 26 Puseram em cima da cruz uma tabuleta onde estava escrito como acusação contra ele: “O Rei dos Judeus”.
27 Com Jesus, crucificaram também dois ladrões: um à sua direita e o outro à sua esquerda. 28 [Assim se cumpriu o que as Escrituras Sagradas dizem: “Ele foi tratado como se fosse um criminoso.”]
29 Os que passavam por ali caçoavam dele, balançavam a cabeça e o insultavam assim:
— Ei, você que disse que era capaz de destruir o Templo e tornar a construí-lo em três dias! 30 Pois desça da cruz e salve-se a si mesmo!
31 Os chefes dos sacerdotes e os mestres da Lei também caçoavam dele, dizendo:
— Ele salvou os outros, mas não pode salvar a si mesmo! 32 Vamos ver o Messias, o Rei de Israel, descer agora da cruz e então creremos nele!
E os ladrões que foram crucificados com Jesus também o insultavam.
A morte de Jesus(AG)
33 Ao meio-dia começou a escurecer, e toda a terra ficou três horas na escuridão. 34 Às três horas da tarde Jesus gritou bem alto:
— “Eloí, Eloí, lemá sabactani?” Essas palavras querem dizer: “Meu Deus, meu Deus, por que me abandonaste?”
35 Algumas pessoas que estavam ali ouviram isso e disseram:
— Escutem! Ele está chamando Elias!
36 Alguém correu e molhou uma esponja em vinho comum, pôs na ponta de um bastão, deu para Jesus beber e disse:
— Esperem! Vamos ver se Elias vem tirá-lo da cruz!
37 Aí Jesus deu um grito forte e morreu.
38 Então a cortina do Templo se rasgou em dois pedaços, de cima até embaixo. 39 O oficial do exército romano que estava em frente da cruz, vendo Jesus morrer daquele modo, disse:
— De fato, este homem era o Filho de Deus!
40 Algumas mulheres também estavam ali, olhando de longe. Entre elas estavam Maria Madalena, Salomé e Maria, que era mãe de José e de Tiago, o mais moço. 41 Essas mulheres tinham acompanhado e ajudado Jesus quando ele estava na Galileia. Além dessas, estavam ali muitas outras mulheres que tinham ido com ele para Jerusalém.
O sepultamento de Jesus(AH)
42-43 Já era quase noite quando chegou José, que era da cidade de Arimateia. Ele era um homem importante e fazia parte do Conselho Superior. José também esperava a vinda do Reino de Deus. Era o Dia da Preparação, isto é, a véspera do sábado. Por isso José, tomando coragem, foi falar com Pilatos e pediu o corpo de Jesus. 44 Pilatos ficou admirado quando soube que Jesus já estava morto. Chamou o oficial romano e perguntou se fazia muito tempo que Jesus tinha morrido. 45 Depois de receber a informação do oficial, Pilatos entregou a José o corpo de Jesus. 46 José comprou um lençol de linho, tirou o corpo da cruz e o enrolou no lençol. Em seguida pôs o corpo num túmulo cavado na rocha e rolou uma grande pedra para fechar a entrada do túmulo. 47 Maria Madalena e Maria, a mãe de José, estavam olhando e viram onde o corpo de Jesus foi colocado.
