Chapter 11

The Entry into Jerusalem.[a] When they drew near to Jerusalem,(A) to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately on entering it, you will find a colt tethered on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone should say to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ reply, ‘The Master has need of it and will send it back here at once.’” So they went off and found a colt tethered at a gate outside on the street, and they untied it. Some of the bystanders said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” They answered them just as Jesus had told them to, and they permitted them to do it. So they brought the colt to Jesus and put their cloaks over it. And he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. Those preceding him as well as those following kept crying out:(B)

“Hosanna!
    Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
10     Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to come!
Hosanna in the highest!”

11 He entered Jerusalem and went into the temple area. He looked around at everything and, since it was already late, went out to Bethany with the Twelve.(C)

Jesus Curses a Fig Tree.[b] 12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany he was hungry.(D) 13 Seeing from a distance a fig tree in leaf, he went over to see if he could find anything on it. When he reached it he found nothing but leaves; it was not the time for figs. 14 And he said to it in reply, “May no one ever eat of your fruit again!” And his disciples heard it.

Cleansing of the Temple.[c] 15 They came to Jerusalem,(E) and on entering the temple area he began to drive out those selling and buying there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves. 16 He did not permit anyone to carry anything through the temple area. 17 Then he taught them saying, “Is it not written:

‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples’?
    But you have made it a den of thieves.”(F)

18 The chief priests and the scribes came to hear of it and were seeking a way to put him to death, yet they feared him because the whole crowd was astonished at his teaching. 19 When evening came, they went out of the city.(G)

The Withered Fig Tree. 20 (H)Early in the morning, as they were walking along, they saw the fig tree withered to its roots. 21 Peter remembered and said to him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered.” 22 Jesus said to them in reply, “Have faith in God. 23 Amen, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it shall be done for him.(I) 24 Therefore I tell you, all that you ask for in prayer, believe that you will receive it and it shall be yours.(J) 25 When you stand to pray, forgive anyone against whom you have a grievance, so that your heavenly Father may in turn forgive you your transgressions.”(K) [26 ][d]

The Authority of Jesus Questioned.[e] 27 They returned once more to Jerusalem.(L) As he was walking in the temple area, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders approached him 28 and said to him, “By what authority are you doing these things? Or who gave you this authority to do them?” 29 Jesus said to them, “I shall ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. 30 Was John’s baptism of heavenly or of human origin? Answer me.” 31 They discussed this among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘Of heavenly origin,’ he will say, ‘[Then] why did you not believe him?’ 32 But shall we say, ‘Of human origin’?”—they feared the crowd, for they all thought John really was a prophet. 33 So they said to Jesus in reply, “We do not know.” Then Jesus said to them, “Neither shall I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

  1. 11:1–11 In Mark’s account Jesus takes the initiative in ordering the preparation for his entry into Jerusalem (Mk 11:1–6) even as he later orders the preparation of his last Passover supper (Mk 14:12–16). In Mk 10:9–10 the greeting Jesus receives stops short of proclaiming him Messiah. He is greeted rather as the prophet of the coming messianic kingdom. Contrast Mt 21:9.
  2. 11:12–14 Jesus’ search for fruit on the fig tree recalls the prophets’ earlier use of this image to designate Israel; cf. Jer 8:13; 29:17; Jl 1:7; Hos 9:10, 16. Cursing the fig tree is a parable in action representing Jesus’ judgment (Mk 11:20) on barren Israel and the fate of Jerusalem for failing to receive his teaching; cf. Is 34:4; Hos 2:14; Lk 13:6–9.

  4. 11:26 This verse, which reads, “But if you do not forgive, neither will your heavenly Father forgive your transgressions,” is omitted in the best manuscripts. It was probably added by copyists under the influence of Mt 6:15.
  5. 11:27–33 The mounting hostility toward Jesus came from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders (Mk 11:27); the Herodians and the Pharisees (Mk 12:13); and the Sadducees (Mk 12:18). By their rejection of God’s messengers, John the Baptist and Jesus, they incurred the divine judgment implied in Mk 11:27–33 and confirmed in the parable of the vineyard tenants (Mk 12:1–12).

The Triumphal Entry(A)

11 Now (B)when they drew near Jerusalem, to [a]Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, He sent two of His disciples; and He said to them, “Go into the village opposite you; and as soon as you have entered it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has sat. Loose it and bring it. And if anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it,’ and immediately he will send it here.”

So they went their way, and found [b]the colt tied by the door outside on the street, and they loosed it. But some of those who stood there said to them, “What are you doing, loosing the colt?”

And they spoke to them just as Jesus had commanded. So they let them go. Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their clothes on it, and He sat on it. (C)And many spread their clothes on the road, and others cut down leafy branches from the trees and spread them on the road. Then those who went before and those who followed cried out, saying:

“Hosanna!
(D)‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’
10 Blessed is the kingdom of our father David
That comes [c]in the name of the Lord!
(E)Hosanna in the highest!”

11 (F)And Jesus went into Jerusalem and into the temple. So when He had looked around at all things, as the hour was already late, He went out to Bethany with the twelve.

The Fig Tree Withered(G)

12 (H)Now the next day, when they had come out from Bethany, He was hungry. 13 (I)And seeing from afar a fig tree having leaves, He went to see if perhaps He would find something on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. 14 In response Jesus said to it, “Let no one eat fruit from you ever again.”

And His disciples heard it.

Jesus Cleanses the Temple(J)

15 (K)So they came to Jerusalem. Then Jesus went into the temple and began to drive out those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold (L)doves. 16 And He would not allow anyone to carry wares through the temple. 17 Then He taught, saying to them, “Is it not written, (M)‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have made it a (N)‘den of thieves.’

18 And (O)the scribes and chief priests heard it and sought how they might destroy Him; for they feared Him, because (P)all the people were astonished at His teaching. 19 When evening had come, He went out of the city.

The Lesson of the Withered Fig Tree(Q)

20 (R)Now in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. 21 And Peter, remembering, said to Him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree which You cursed has withered away.”

22 So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God. 23 For (S)assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. 24 Therefore I say to you, (T)whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.

Forgiveness and Prayer(U)

25 “And whenever you stand praying, (V)if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. 26 [d]But (W)if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses.”

Jesus’ Authority Questioned(X)

27 Then they came again to Jerusalem. (Y)And as He was walking in the temple, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders came to Him. 28 And they said to Him, “By what (Z)authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority to do these things?”

29 But Jesus answered and said to them, “I also will ask you one question; then answer Me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things: 30 The (AA)baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men? Answer Me.”

31 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 32 But if we say, ‘From men’ ”—they feared the people, for (AB)all counted John to have been a prophet indeed. 33 So they answered and said to Jesus, “We do not know.”

And Jesus answered and said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

Intrarea triumfală în Ierusalim

11 Când s-au apropiat de Ierusalim şi au ajuns la Betfaghe şi Betania, lângă Muntele Măslinilor, Isus i-a trimis pe doi dintre ucenicii Săi în sat, spunându-le: „Duceţi-vă în satul dinaintea voastră şi imediat ce intraţi în el, veţi găsi legat un măgăruş pe care nu a încălecat încă nici un om. Dezlegaţi-l şi aduceţi-l! Dacă vă va zice cineva: «De ce faceţi aceasta?», să-i spuneţi: «Domnul are nevoie de el. Şi imediat îl va trimite înapoi aici.»“ Ei s-au dus, au găsit măgăruşul legat lângă uşă, afară în stradă, şi l-au dezlegat. Cei care stăteau acolo i-au întrebat: „Ce faceţi de dezlegaţi măgăruşul?“ Ei le-au zis aşa cum le spusese Isus şi aceştia i-au lăsat să plece. Au adus măgăruşul la Isus, şi-au pus hainele peste el, iar Isus S-a aşezat deasupra lui. Mulţi îşi aşterneau hainele pe drum,[a] iar alţii presărau ramuri pe care le tăiaseră de pe câmpuri. Cei care mergeau înainte şi cei care-L urmau strigau:

Osana![b]

Binecuvântat este Cel Ce vine în Numele Domnului![c]

10 Binecuvântată este Împărăţia care vine, Împărăţia părintelui nostru David![d]

Osana în locurile preaînalte!“

Isus curăţă Templul

11 A intrat în Ierusalim, în Templu, s-a uitat de jur-împrejur la toate lucrurile şi, pentru că era deja seara târziu, S-a dus la Betania împreună cu cei doisprezece.

12 În ziua următoare, după ce au ieşit din Betania, lui Isus I s-a făcut foame. 13 A văzut de departe un smochin care avea frunze şi S-a dus să vadă dacă va găsi ceva în el. Dar, când a ajuns, n-a găsit decât frunze, pentru că nu era vremea smochinelor. 14 Atunci i-a zis: „În veac să nu mai mănânce nimeni roade din tine!“ Ucenicii Lui au auzit aceasta.

15 Au ajuns în Ierusalim. El a intrat în Templu[e] şi a început să-i scoată afară pe cei ce vindeau şi cumpărau în Templu. A răsturnat mesele schimbătorilor de bani şi scaunele celor ce vindeau porumbei 16 şi nu lăsa pe nimeni să ducă vreo marfă[f] prin Templu. 17 El îi învăţa şi le zicea: „Oare nu este scris:

«Casa Mea va fi numită
    o casă de rugăciune pentru toate neamurile.»[g]?

Dar voi aţi făcut din ea o peşteră de tâlhari!“[h]

18 Conducătorii preoţilor şi cărturarii au auzit lucrul acesta şi căutau o modalitate să-L omoare, pentru că se temeau de El, deoarece întreaga mulţime era uimită de învăţătura Lui. 19 Şi ori de câte ori se făcea târziu, Isus şi ucenicii Lui[i] ieşeau afară din cetate.

Smochinul uscat. Puterea credinţei

20 Dimineaţa, când au trecut pe lângă smochin, au văzut că era uscat din rădăcini. 21 Petru şi-a amintit ce se întâmplase şi i-a zis:

Rabbi[j], iată că smochinul pe care l-ai blestemat s-a uscat!

22 Isus a răspuns:

– Aveţi credinţă în Dumnezeu! 23 Adevărat[k] vă spun că dacă cineva ar zice acestui munte: „Ridică-te şi aruncă-te în mare!“ şi nu s-ar îndoi în inima lui, ci ar crede că ceea ce spune se va întâmpla, i se va da întocmai! 24 De aceea vă spun că toate lucrurile pe care le cereţi atunci când vă rugaţi, să credeţi că le-aţi şi primit şi ele vi se vor da. 25 Şi când staţi în picioare rugându-vă, să iertaţi dacă aveţi ceva împotriva cuiva, pentru ca şi Tatăl vostru Care este în ceruri să vă ierte vouă greşelile. 26 (Dar dacă nu iertaţi, nici Tatăl vostru Care este în ceruri nu va ierta greşelile voastre.)[l]

Autoritatea lui Isus

27 Au intrat apoi din nou în Ierusalim. În timp ce se plimba prin Templu, au venit la El conducătorii preoţilor, cărturarii şi bătrânii 28 şi L-au întrebat:

– Cu ce autoritate faci aceste lucruri? Şi cine Ţi-a dat această autoritate ca să le faci?

29 Isus le-a răspuns:

– Vă voi pune o întrebare. Răspundeţi-Mi, şi vă voi spune cu ce autoritate fac aceste lucruri. 30 Botezul lui Ioan era din cer sau de la oameni? Răspundeţi-Mi!

31 Ei au început să vorbească între ei şi să zică: „Dacă vom răspunde: «Din cer!», ne va întreba: «Atunci de ce nu l-aţi crezut?». 32 Sau să răspundem: «De la oameni!»?“ Ei se temeau de mulţime, fiindcă toţi considerau că Ioan a fost într-adevăr un profet.

33 Aşa că I-au răspuns lui Isus:

– Nu ştim!

Atunci şi Isus le-a zis:

– Nici Eu nu vă spun cu ce autoritate fac aceste lucruri.
