¹⁴ And he said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard it.

^19 (A)And seeing a fig tree by the wayside, he went to it and found nothing on it but only leaves. And he said to it, “May no fruit ever come from you again!” And the fig tree withered at once.

⁶ If anyone does not abide in me ^(A)he is thrown away like a branch and withers; ^(B)and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.

^19 (A)Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

¹⁰ Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. ^(A)Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

The Lesson from the Withered Fig Tree

^20 (A)As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots. ²¹ And Peter remembered and said to him, ^(B)“Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered.”

A Tree Is Known by Its Fruit

^33 (A)“Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, ^(B)for the tree is known by its fruit. ^34 (C)You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, ^(D)when you are evil? ^(E)For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. ^35 (F)The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil.

^11 (A)Let the evildoer still do evil, and the filthy still be filthy, and the righteous still do right, and the holy still be holy.”
