On Divorce

10 And from there he set out and[a] came to the region of Judea and the other side of the Jordan, and again crowds came together to him. And again, as he was accustomed to do,[b] he began to teach[c] them. 2 And they asked[d] him if it was permitted for a man to divorce his[e] wife, in order to[f] test him. 3 And he answered and[g] said to them, “What did Moses command you?” 4 So they said, “Moses permitted a man[h] to write a certificate of divorce and to send her[i] away.” 5 But Jesus said to them, “He wrote this commandment for you because of your hardness of heart. 6 But from the beginning of creation ‘he made them male and female.[j] 7 Because of this a man will leave his father and mother and will be joined to his wife,[k] 8 and the two will become one flesh,’[l] so that they are no longer two but one flesh. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, man must not separate.”

10 And in the house again the disciples began to ask[m] him about this. 11 And he said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. 12 And if she divorces her husband and[n] marries another, she commits adultery.”

Little Children Brought to Jesus

13 And they were bringing young children to him so that he could touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. 14 But when[o] Jesus saw it,[p] he was indignant, and said to them, “Let the young children come to me. Do not forbid them, for to such belongs[q] the kingdom of God. 15 Truly I say to you, whoever does not welcome the kingdom of God like a young child will never enter into it.” 16 And after[r] taking them[s] into his arms, he blessed them, placing his[t] hands on them.

A Rich Young Man

17 And as[u] he was setting out on his way, one individual ran up and knelt down before him and[v] asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do so that I will inherit eternal life?” 18 So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.’”[w] 20 And he said to him, “Teacher, all these I have observed from my youth.” 21 And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: Go, sell all that you have, and give the proceeds[x] to the poor—and you will have treasure in heaven—and come, follow me.” 22 But he looked gloomy at the statement and[y] went away sorrowful, because he had[z] many possessions.

23 And Jesus looked around and[aa] said to his disciples, “How difficult it is for[ab] those who possess wealth to enter into the kingdom of God!” 24 And the disciples were astounded at his words. But Jesus answered and[ac] said to them again, “Children, how difficult it is to enter into the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter into the kingdom of God.” 26 And they were very astounded, saying to one another, “And who can be saved?” 27 Jesus looked at them and[ad] said, “With human beings it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.” 28 Peter began to say to him, “Behold, we have left everything and followed you.” 29 Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields on account of me and on account of the gospel 30 who will not[ae] receive a hundred times as much now in this time—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and fields, together with persecutions—and in the age to come, eternal life. 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”

Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection a Third Time

32 Now they were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was going on ahead of them. And they were astounded, but those who were following him[af] were afraid. And taking aside the twelve again, he began to tell them the things that were about to happen to him: 33 “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles. 34 And they will mock him and spit on him and flog him and kill him,[ag] and after three days he will rise.”

A Request by James and John

35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and[ah] said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask you.” 36 And he said to them, “What do you want that I do[ai] for you?” 37 So they said to him, “Grant to us that we may sit one at your right hand and one at your left in your glory.” 38 But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking! Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” 39 And they said to him, “We are able.” So Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup that I drink, and you will be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with, 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but is for those for whom it has been prepared.” 41 And when they[aj] heard this,[ak] the ten began to be indignant about James and John. 42 And Jesus called them to himself and[al] said to them, “You know that those who are considered to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their people in high positions exercise authority over them. 43 But it is not like this among you! But whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be most prominent among you must be the slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

A Blind Man Healed at Jericho

46 And they came to Jericho. And as[am] he was setting out from Jericho along with his disciples and a large crowd, a blind beggar, Bartimaeus the son of Timaeus, was sitting beside the road. 47 And when he[an] heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 48 And many people warned him that he should be quiet. But he was crying out even more loudly,[ao] “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 And Jesus stopped and[ap] said, “Call him.” And they called the blind man and[aq] said to him, “Have courage! Get up! He is calling you.” 50 And he threw off his cloak, jumped up, and[ar] came to Jesus. 51 And Jesus answered him and[as] said, “What do you want me to do[at] for you?” And the blind man said to him, “Rabboni,[au] that I may regain my sight.” 52 And Jesus said to him, “Go, your faith has healed you.” And immediately he regained his sight and began to follow[av] him on the road.

10 (A)Poi Gesú partí di là e se ne andò nei territori della *Giudea e oltre il *Giordano. Di nuovo si radunarono presso di lui delle folle; e di nuovo egli insegnava loro come era solito fare.

2 Dei *farisei si avvicinarono a lui per metterlo alla prova, dicendo: «È lecito a un marito mandar via la moglie[a]?» 3 Egli rispose loro: «Che cosa vi ha comandato *Mosè?» 4 Essi dissero: «Mosè permise di scrivere un atto di ripudio e di mandarla via». 5 Gesú disse loro: «È per la durezza del vostro cuore che Mosè scrisse per voi quella norma; 6 ma al principio della creazione Dio li fece maschio e femmina. 7 Perciò l'uomo lascerà suo padre e sua madre, e i due saranno una sola carne.[b] 8 Cosí non sono piú due, ma una sola carne. 9 L'uomo, dunque, non separi quel che Dio ha unito».

Gesú benedice i bambini

13 (B)Gli presentavano dei bambini perché li toccasse; ma i discepoli sgridavano coloro che glieli presentavano. 14 Gesú, veduto ciò, si indignò e disse loro: «Lasciate che i bambini vengano da me; non glielo vietate, perché il regno di Dio è per chi assomiglia a loro. 15 In verità io vi dico che chiunque non avrà ricevuto il regno di Dio come un bambino, non vi entrerà affatto». 16 E, presili in braccio, li benediceva ponendo le mani su di loro.

Il giovane ricco

17 (C)Mentre Gesú usciva per la via, un tale accorse e, inginocchiatosi davanti a lui, gli domandò: «Maestro buono, che cosa devo fare per ereditare la vita eterna?» 18 Gesú gli disse: «Perché mi chiami buono? Nessuno è buono, tranne uno solo, cioè Dio. 19 Tu sai i comandamenti: “Non uccidere; non commettere adulterio; non rubare; non dire falsa testimonianza; non frodare nessuno; onora tuo padre e tua madre”[c]». 20 Ed egli rispose: «Maestro, tutte queste cose le ho osservate fin dalla mia gioventú». 21 Gesú, guardatolo, l'amò e gli disse: «Una cosa ti manca! Va', vendi tutto ciò che hai e dàllo ai poveri e avrai un tesoro in cielo; poi vieni e seguimi». 22 Ma egli, rattristato da quella parola, se ne andò dolente, perché aveva molti beni. 23 Gesú, guardatosi attorno, disse ai suoi discepoli: «Quanto difficilmente coloro che hanno delle ricchezze entreranno nel regno di Dio!» 24 I discepoli si stupirono di queste sue parole. E Gesú replicò loro: «Figlioli, quanto è difficile [per quelli che confidano nelle ricchezze] entrare nel regno di Dio! 25 È piú facile per un cammello passare attraverso la cruna di un ago, che per un ricco entrare nel regno di Dio». 26 Ed essi sempre piú stupiti dicevano tra di loro: «Chi dunque può essere salvato?» 27 Gesú fissò lo sguardo su di loro e disse: «Agli uomini è impossibile, ma non a Dio; perché ogni cosa è possibile a Dio».

28 (D)*Pietro gli disse: «Ecco, noi abbiamo lasciato ogni cosa e ti abbiamo seguito». 29 Gesú rispose: «In verità vi dico che non vi è nessuno che abbia lasciato casa, o fratelli, o sorelle, o madre, o padre, o figli, o campi, per amor mio e per amor del vangelo, 30 il quale ora, in questo tempo, non ne riceva cento volte tanto: case, fratelli, sorelle,
madri, figli, campi, insieme a persecuzioni e, nel secolo a venire, la vita eterna. 31 Ma molti primi saranno ultimi e molti ultimi primi».

Gesú predice per la terza volta la passione e la risurrezione

32 (E)Mentre erano in cammino salendo a *Gerusalemme, Gesú andava davanti a loro; essi erano turbati; quelli che seguivano erano pieni di timore. Egli prese di nuovo da parte i dodici, e cominciò a dir loro le cose che stavano per accadergli: 33 «Noi saliamo a Gerusalemme e il *Figlio dell'uomo sarà dato nelle mani dei capi dei *sacerdoti e degli *scribi. Essi lo condanneranno a morte e lo consegneranno ai pagani, 34 i quali lo scherniranno, gli sputeranno addosso, lo flagelleranno e l'uccideranno; ma, dopo tre giorni, egli risusciterà».

Risposta di Gesú alla domanda di Giacomo e di Giovanni

35 (F)*Giacomo e *Giovanni, figli di Zebedeo, si avvicinarono a lui, dicendogli: «Maestro, desideriamo che tu faccia per noi quello che ti chiederemo». 36 Egli disse loro: «Che volete che io faccia per voi?» 37 Essi gli dissero: «Concedici di sedere uno alla tua destra e l'altro alla tua sinistra nella tua gloria». 38 Ma Gesú disse loro: «Voi non sapete quello che chiedete. Potete voi bere il calice che io bevo, o essere battezzati del battesimo del quale io sono battezzato?» Essi gli dissero: «Sí, lo possiamo». 39 E Gesú disse loro: «Voi certo berrete il calice che io bevo e sarete battezzati del battesimo del quale io sono battezzato; 40 ma quanto al sedersi alla mia destra o alla mia sinistra, non sta a me concederlo, ma è per quelli a cui è stato preparato». 41 I dieci, udito ciò, cominciarono a indignarsi con Giacomo e Giovanni. 42 Ma Gesú, chiamatili a sé, disse loro: «Voi sapete che quelli che son reputati principi delle nazioni le signoreggiano e che i loro grandi le sottomettono al loro dominio. 43 Ma non è cosí tra di voi; anzi, chiunque vorrà essere grande fra voi, sarà vostro servitore; 44 e chiunque, tra di voi, vorrà essere primo sarà servo di tutti. 45 Poiché anche il Figlio dell'uomo non è venuto per essere servito, ma per servire, e per dare la sua vita come prezzo di riscatto per molti».

Gesú guarisce Bartimeo, il cieco

46 (G)Poi giunsero a *Gerico. E come Gesú usciva da Gerico con i suoi discepoli e con una gran folla, il figlio di Timeo, Bartimeo, cieco mendicante, sedeva presso la strada. 47 Udito che chi passava era Gesú il Nazareno, si mise a gridare e a dire: «Gesú, figlio di *Davide, abbi pietà di me!» 48 E molti lo sgridavano perché tacesse, ma quello gridava piú forte: «Figlio di Davide, abbi pietà di me!» 49 Gesú, fermatosi, disse: «Chiamatelo!» E chiamarono il cieco, dicendogli: «Coraggio, àlzati! Egli ti chiama». 50 Allora il cieco, gettato via il mantello, balzò in piedi e venne da Gesú. 51 E Gesú, rivolgendosi a lui, gli disse: «Che cosa vuoi che ti faccia?» Il cieco gli rispose: «*Rabbuní, che io ricuperi la vista». 52 Gesú gli disse: «Va', la tua fede ti ha salvato». In quell'istante egli ricuperò la vista e seguiva Gesú per la via.

Divorce(A)

10 Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the Jordan.(B) Again crowds of people came to him, and as was his custom, he taught them.(C)

2 Some Pharisees(D) came and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”

3 “What did Moses command you?” he replied.

4 They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.”(E)

5 “It was because your hearts were hard(F) that Moses wrote you this law,” Jesus replied. 6 “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’[a](G) 7 ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,[b] 8 and the two will become one flesh.’[c](H) So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

10 When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. 11 He answered, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her.(I) 12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”(J)

The Little Children and Jesus(K)

13 People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. 14 When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.(L) 15 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”(M) 16 And he took the children in his arms,(N) placed his hands on them and blessed them.

The Rich and the Kingdom of God(O)

17 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees(P) before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”(Q)

18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.’[d]”(R)

20 “Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.”

21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor,(S) and you will have treasure in heaven.(T) Then come, follow me.”(U)

22 At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.

23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich(V) to enter the kingdom of God!”

24 The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, “Children, how hard it is[e] to enter the kingdom of God!(W) 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”(X)

26 The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, “Who then can be saved?”

27 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”(Y)

28 Then Peter spoke up, “We have left everything to follow you!”(Z)

29 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel 30 will fail to receive a hundred times as much(AA) in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—along with persecutions—and in the age to come(AB) eternal life.(AC) 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”(AD)

Again he took the Twelve(AF) aside and told them what was going to happen to him. 33 “We are going up to Jerusalem,”(AG) he said, “and the Son of Man(AH) will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law.(AI) They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, 34 who will mock him and spit on him, flog him(AJ) and kill him.(AK) Three days later(AL) he will rise.”(AM)

The Request of James and John(AN)

35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.”

36 “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.

39 “We can,” they answered.

41 When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. 42 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,(AT) 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve,(AU) and to give his life as a ransom for many.”(AV)

Blind Bartimaeus Receives His Sight(AW)

46 Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means “son of Timaeus”), was sitting by the roadside begging. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth,(AX) he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David,(AY) have mercy on me!”

48 Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.”

So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” 50 Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.

51 “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him.

The blind man said, “Rabbi,(AZ) I want to see.”

52 “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.”(BA) Immediately he received his sight and followed(BB) Jesus along the road.
