Jesus Teaches About Divorce(A)
10 Then Jesus left that place and went into the ·area [region] of Judea and across the Jordan River. Again, crowds came to him, and he taught them as he usually did.
2 Some Pharisees came to Jesus and tried to ·trick [test; trap] him. They asked, “Is it ·right [lawful; C according to the law of Moses] for a man to divorce his wife?”
3 Jesus answered, “What did Moses command you to do?”
4 They said, “Moses ·allowed [permitted] a man to write out divorce papers and send her away [Deut. 24:1].”
5 Jesus said, “Moses wrote that command for you because you were ·stubborn [hard hearted]. 6 But ·when God made the world [from the beginning of creation], ‘he made them male and female’ [Gen. 1:27; 5:2]. 7 ‘So a man will leave his father and mother and be ·united with [joined to] his wife,[a] 8 and the two will become ·one body [as though they were one person; T one flesh; Gen. 2:24]’. So they are no longer two, but one. 9 God has joined the two together, so no one should separate them.”
10 Later, in the house, his ·followers [disciples] asked Jesus again about ·the question of divorce [L this matter]. 11 He answered, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman ·is guilty of [commits] adultery against her. 12 And the woman who divorces her husband and marries another man ·is also guilty of [commits] adultery.”
Jesus Accepts Children(B)
13 Some people brought their little children to Jesus so he could touch them, but his ·followers [disciples] ·told them to stop [scolded/rebuked them]. 14 When Jesus saw this, he was ·upset [angry; indignant] and said to them, “Let the little children come to me. Don’t stop them, because the kingdom of God belongs to people who are like these children [C meaning humble and dependent]. 15 I tell you the truth, you must accept the kingdom of God as if you were a little child, or you will never enter it.” 16 Then Jesus took the children in his arms, ·put [laid] his hands on them, and blessed them.
A Rich Young Man’s Question(C)
17 As Jesus started ·to leave [on his way; on a journey], a man ran to him and ·fell on his knees [knelt] before Jesus. The man asked, “Good teacher, what must I do to ·have life forever [L inherit eternal life]?”
18 Jesus answered, “Why do you call me good? ·Only God is good [No one is good except One—God; C Jesus is not denying his own divinity, but is challenging the man’s understanding of goodness]. 19 You know the commands: ‘You must not murder. You must not ·be guilty of [commit] adultery. You must not steal. You must not ·tell lies about your neighbor [testify falsely; T bear false witness]. You must not ·cheat [defraud]. Honor your father and mother’ [Ex. 20:12–16; Deut. 5:16–20].”
20 The man said, “Teacher, I have ·obeyed [kept carefully; guarded] all these things since I was a boy.”
21 Jesus, looking at the man, loved him and said, “There is one more thing you need to do. Go and sell everything you have, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come and follow me.”
22 He was ·very sad [shocked; appalled] to hear Jesus say this, and he left ·sorrowfully [grieving], because he ·was rich [had many possessions].
23 Then Jesus looked [around] at his ·followers [disciples] and said, “How hard it will be for ·the rich [those with many possessions] to enter the kingdom of God!”
24 The ·followers [disciples] were ·amazed [astonished] at what Jesus said. [C In Judaism wealth was generally viewed as a reward from God.] But he said again, “My children, it is very hard[b] to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God [C meaning it is impossible, by human effort; see v. 27].”
26 They were even more ·surprised [amazed] and said to each other, “Then who can be saved?”
27 Jesus looked at them and said, “·For people [Humanly speaking,] this is impossible, but for God all things are possible.”
28 Peter ·said [spoke up] to Jesus, “Look, we have left everything and followed you.”
29 Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, all those who have left houses, brothers, sisters, mother, father, children, or ·farms [fields] for me and for the ·Good News [Gospel] 30 will get more than they left. Here in ·this world [the present age] they will have a hundred times more homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and ·fields [farms]. And with those things, ·they will also suffer for their belief [persecutions]. But in the ·age [world] that is coming they will have ·life forever [eternal life]. 31 Many who are first now will be last in the future. And many who are last now will be first in the future.”
Jesus Talks a Third Time About His Death(D)
32 As Jesus and the people with him were on the road to Jerusalem, he was leading the way. His ·followers [disciples] were ·amazed [surprised; puzzled; alarmed], but others in the crowd who followed were afraid. Again Jesus took ·the twelve apostles [the Twelve] aside and began to tell them what was about to happen [to him] in Jerusalem. 33 He said, “Look, we are going [L up] to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be ·turned over [betrayed; delivered over; see 9:31] to the ·leading [T chief] priests and the ·teachers of the law [scribes]. They will ·say that he must die [condemn him to death], and they will turn him over to the ·Gentiles [C the Roman authorities], 34 who will laugh at him and spit on him. They will beat him with whips and ·crucify [L kill] him. But after three days, he will rise to life again.”
Two Followers Ask Jesus a Favor(E)
35 Then James and John, sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus and said, “Teacher, we want ·to ask you to do something for us [you to do whatever we ask].”
36 Jesus asked, “What do you want me to do for you?”
37 They answered, “Let one of us sit at your right side and one of us sit at your left side in your glory [C the messianic kingdom].”
38 Jesus said, “You don’t understand what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I must drink? And can you be baptized with the same kind of baptism that I must go through?” [C Both “cup” and “baptism” symbolize suffering, and perhaps God’s judgment experienced by Jesus on the cross; Jer. 25:15–29.]
39 They answered, “Yes, we can.”
Jesus said to them, “You will drink the same cup that I will drink, and you will be baptized with the same baptism that I must go through. 40 But ·I cannot choose [it is not for me to grant/say] who will sit at my right or my left; those places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.”
41 When ·the other ten followers [L the ten] heard this, they began to be ·angry [indignant] with James and John.
42 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of ·other nations [the Gentiles] love to ·show their power [lord it] over the people, and their ·important leaders [high officials; L great ones] love to ·use [exert] their authority [L over them]. 43 But it ·should not be [must not be; is not to be] that way among you. [Instead, L But] Whoever wants to become great among you must ·serve the rest of you like a servant [L be your servant]. 44 Whoever wants to become the first among you must ·serve all of you like a slave [L be your slave]. 45 In the same way, the Son of Man did not come to be served. He came to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many people [Is. 53:12; John 11:49–50].”
Jesus Heals a Blind Man(F)
46 Then they came to the town of Jericho. As Jesus was leaving there with his ·followers [disciples] and a great many people, a blind beggar named Bartimaeus [which means] son of Timaeus was sitting by the road. 47 When he heard that Jesus from Nazareth was walking by, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David [C a title for the Messiah, a descendant of King David; 2 Sam. 7:11–16], ·have mercy [take pity] on me!”
48 Many people ·warned [rebuked; scolded] the blind man to be quiet, but he shouted even more, “Son of David, ·have mercy [take pity] on me!”
49 Jesus stopped and said, “Tell the man to come here.”
So they called the blind man, saying, “·Cheer up [Take courage]! Get to your feet. Jesus is calling you.” 50 The blind man jumped up, ·left his coat there [threw off his cloak], and went to Jesus.
51 Jesus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?”
The blind man answered, “·Teacher [L Rabbouni], I want to see.”
52 Jesus said, “Go, ·you are healed because you believed [your faith has healed you].” At once the man could see, and he followed Jesus on the road.

Divorce(A)
10 Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the Jordan.(B) Again crowds of people came to him, and as was his custom, he taught them.(C)
2 Some Pharisees(D) came and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”
3 “What did Moses command you?” he replied.
4 They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.”(E)
5 “It was because your hearts were hard(F) that Moses wrote you this law,” Jesus replied. 6 “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’[a](G) 7 ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,[b] 8 and the two will become one flesh.’[c](H) So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
10 When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. 11 He answered, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her.(I) 12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”(J)
The Little Children and Jesus(K)
13 People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. 14 When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.(L) 15 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”(M) 16 And he took the children in his arms,(N) placed his hands on them and blessed them.
The Rich and the Kingdom of God(O)
17 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees(P) before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”(Q)
18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.’[d]”(R)
20 “Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.”
21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor,(S) and you will have treasure in heaven.(T) Then come, follow me.”(U)
22 At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.
23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich(V) to enter the kingdom of God!”
24 The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, “Children, how hard it is[e] to enter the kingdom of God!(W) 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”(X)
26 The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, “Who then can be saved?”
27 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”(Y)
28 Then Peter spoke up, “We have left everything to follow you!”(Z)
29 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel 30 will fail to receive a hundred times as much(AA) in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—along with persecutions—and in the age to come(AB) eternal life.(AC) 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”(AD)
Jesus Predicts His Death a Third Time(AE)
32 They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and the disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid. Again he took the Twelve(AF) aside and told them what was going to happen to him. 33 “We are going up to Jerusalem,”(AG) he said, “and the Son of Man(AH) will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law.(AI) They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, 34 who will mock him and spit on him, flog him(AJ) and kill him.(AK) Three days later(AL) he will rise.”(AM)
The Request of James and John(AN)
35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.”
36 “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.
37 They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.”(AO)
38 “You don’t know what you are asking,”(AP) Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup(AQ) I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?”(AR)
39 “We can,” they answered.
Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with,(AS) 40 but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.”
41 When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. 42 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,(AT) 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve,(AU) and to give his life as a ransom for many.”(AV)
Blind Bartimaeus Receives His Sight(AW)
46 Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means “son of Timaeus”), was sitting by the roadside begging. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth,(AX) he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David,(AY) have mercy on me!”
48 Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.”
So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” 50 Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.
51 “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him.
The blind man said, “Rabbi,(AZ) I want to see.”
52 “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.”(BA) Immediately he received his sight and followed(BB) Jesus along the road.

Echtscheiding
10 Toen stond Jezus op en reisde door het gebied aan de overkant van de Jordaan naar Judea. Weer kwamen er grote groepen mensen naar Hem toe. En zoals altijd gaf Hij hun les.
2 Er kwamen ook Farizeeërs naar Hem toe. Ze wilden Hem met een strikvraag in de val laten lopen. Ze hoopten dat Hij iets verkeerds zou zeggen. Ze vroegen: "Mag een man van zijn vrouw scheiden?" 3 Hij antwoordde: "Wat heeft Mozes tegen jullie gezegd?" 4 Ze zeiden: "Mozes vond het goed, als de man haar een brief meegeeft waarin staat dat hij van haar gescheiden is." 5 Jezus zei tegen hen: "Hij heeft dat opgeschreven omdat hij wist dat jullie hard zijn. 6 Maar vanaf het begin van de wereld heeft God hen als man en vrouw gemaakt. 7 Er staat in de Boeken: 'Daarom zal een man weggaan bij zijn vader en moeder en van zijn vrouw houden en trouw aan haar zijn. 8 Vanaf dan zijn ze niet meer twee aparte mensen, maar samen één geheel.' 9 En wat God zo tot één geheel heeft gemaakt, zou een mens niet meer uit elkaar moeten halen."[a]
10 Toen ze thuisgekomen waren, vroegen de leerlingen Hem er weer naar. 11 Hij zei tegen hen: "Als iemand zijn vrouw wegstuurt en met een andere vrouw trouwt, is hij ontrouw aan zijn eerste vrouw. 12 En als een vrouw weggaat bij haar man en met een andere man trouwt, is ze ontrouw aan haar eerste man."
Jezus zegent de kinderen
13 De mensen brachten hun kleine kinderen naar Jezus toe. Ze wilden dat Hij hun de handen op zou leggen. Maar de leerlingen stuurden hen weg. 14 Toen Jezus dat zag, werd Hij boos. Hij zei tegen hen: "Laat de kinderen bij Mij komen. Houd ze niet tegen. Want het Koninkrijk van God is voor mensen zoals zij. 15 Luister goed! Ik zeg jullie: als je het Koninkrijk van God niet ontvangt zoals een kind dat doet, kun je het niet binnengaan." 16 En Hij sloeg zijn armen om de kinderen, legde hun de handen op en zegende hen.
De rijke man
17 Toen Jezus weer verder ging, kwam er een jongeman naar Hem toe. Hij liet zich voor Hem op zijn knieën vallen en vroeg: "Goede Meester, wat moet ik doen om het eeuwige leven te krijgen?" 18 Jezus zei tegen hem: "Waarom noem je Mij 'goed'? 19 Alleen God is goed. Je kent de wetten van Mozes: dood niemand, wees trouw aan je vrouw, steel niet, vertel geen leugens over een ander, wees niet oneerlijk, heb respect voor je vader en moeder en zorg voor hen." 20 Hij antwoordde Jezus: "Daar heb ik me mijn hele leven aan gehouden." 21 Jezus keek hem aan en hield van hem. Hij zei tegen hem: "Je moet nog één ding doen. Ga naar huis, verkoop alles wat je hebt en geef het geld aan de arme mensen. Dan zul je een schat in de hemel hebben. Kom dan hier, neem het kruis op[b] en volg Mij." 22 Maar zijn gezicht werd somber toen hij dat hoorde. Verdrietig ging hij weg, want hij was heel erg rijk.
23 Jezus keek de kring rond en zei tegen zijn leerlingen: "Wat is het voor rijke mensen toch moeilijk om het Koninkrijk van God binnen te gaan." 24 Zijn leerlingen waren erg verbaasd over die woorden. Maar Jezus zei: "Kinderen, wat is het voor mensen die op hun bezit vertrouwen toch moeilijk om het Koninkrijk van God binnen te gaan. 25 Het is gemakkelijker voor een kameel om door het oog van een naald te kruipen, dan voor rijke mensen om het Koninkrijk van God binnen te gaan." 26 Toen waren ze nog ongeruster. Ze zeiden tegen elkaar: "Maar wie kan er dán worden gered?" 27 Jezus keek hen aan en zei: "Bij mensen is dat onmogelijk, maar niet bij God. Want bij God zijn alle dingen mogelijk."
Wat is de beloning voor het volgen van Jezus?
28 Toen zei Petrus tegen Jezus: "Heer, wij hebben alles achtergelaten en zijn U gevolgd." 29 Jezus zei: "Luister goed! Ik zeg jullie dat iedereen die zijn huis of broers of zussen of moeder of vader of vrouw of kinderen of akkers heeft achtergelaten voor Mij en voor het goede nieuws, 30 100 keer zoveel terug zal krijgen. Nu in deze wereld zul je huizen en broers en zussen en moeders en kinderen en akkers krijgen, én vervolging. En in de wereld die nog komt, krijg je het eeuwige leven. 31 Maar veel mensen die nu het eerst zijn, zullen straks het laatst zijn. En veel mensen die nu het laatst zijn, zullen straks het eerst zijn."[c]
Jezus vertelt opnieuw over zijn dood
32 Ze waren op weg naar Jeruzalem. Jezus liep voor hen uit. De leerlingen en de andere mensen die met hen meeliepen, waren ongerust. Opnieuw nam Jezus de twaalf leerlingen apart. Hij begon hun opnieuw te vertellen wat er met Hem zou gaan gebeuren. 33 Hij zei: "We zijn op weg naar Jeruzalem. De Mensenzoon zal gevangen worden genomen door de leiders van de priesters en door de wetgeleerden. Ze zullen ervoor zorgen dat Hij de doodstraf krijgt en Hem aan de Romeinen uitleveren. 34 Die zullen Hem belachelijk maken, bespugen, zweepslagen geven en doden. Maar op de derde dag zal Hij uit de dood opstaan."
Niet heersen, maar dienen
35 Jakobus en Johannes, de twee zonen van Zebedeüs, kwamen naar Jezus en zeiden: "Meester, we willen iets van U vragen." 36 Hij zei: "Wat willen jullie dat Ik voor jullie doe?" 37 Ze zeiden tegen Hem: "Mogen wij alstublieft links en rechts naast U zitten wanneer U Koning geworden bent?" 38 Maar Jezus zei tegen hen: "Jullie weten niet wat jullie vragen. Kunnen jullie doen wat Ik moet doen? Kunnen jullie doormaken wat Ik moet doormaken?" 39 Ze zeiden tegen Hem: "Dat kunnen wij." Jezus zei tegen hen: "Jullie zullen wel hetzelfde doormaken als Ik. 40 Maar Ik kan jullie niet beloven dat jullie naast Mij zullen zitten. Die plaatsen zijn voor de mensen voor wie die plaatsen bestemd zijn."
41 Toen de tien andere leerlingen hoorden wat er was gebeurd, werden ze boos op Jakobus en Johannes. 42 Jezus riep hen bij Zich en zei: "Jullie weten dat de mensen die de regeerders van de volken heten, heersen over de mensen. En de mensen die nóg weer hoger zijn, gebruiken hun macht over hén. Maar zo moet het bij jullie niet zijn. 43 Maar als je geëerd wil worden, dien dan de anderen. 44 En als je de belangrijkste wil zijn, doe dan slavenwerk voor de anderen. 45 Want ook de Mensenzoon is niet gekomen om Zich te láten dienen, maar om Zélf te dienen. Hij is gekomen om zijn leven te geven. Zijn leven zal het losgeld zijn waarmee Hij heel veel mensen vrijkoopt."
Jezus geneest een blinde man bij Jericho
46 Ze kwamen bij Jericho. Toen Jezus met zijn leerlingen en een heel grote groep mensen weer uit de stad vertrok, zat er een blinde bedelaar langs de kant van de weg. Dat was Bartimeüs, de zoon van Timeüs. 47 Toen hij hoorde dat Jezus van Nazaret langs kwam, begon hij te roepen: "Jezus, Zoon van David,[d] help me alstublieft!" 48 De mensen werden boos op hem en zeiden dat hij zijn mond moest houden. Maar hij riep nog veel harder: "Zoon van David, help me alstublieft!" 49 Jezus bleef staan en zei: "Roep hem hier." Toen riepen ze de blinde man. Ze zeiden tegen hem: "Rustig maar! Sta op, Hij roept je." 50 Hij gooide zijn mantel af, stond op en ging naar Jezus. 51 En Jezus vroeg hem: "Wat wil je dat Ik voor je doe?" De blinde man antwoordde: "Meester, ik wil zo graag kunnen zien!" 52 Jezus zei tegen hem: "Ga naar huis, je geloof heeft je gered." Onmiddellijk kon hij zien en hij volgde Hem op de weg.

- Markus 10:21 De mensen die naar Jezus luisterden, kenden de Romeinse doodstraf door kruisiging. Iemand die gekruisigd ging worden, moest zelf zijn kruis dragen. Zij begrepen dus heel goed dat 'het kruis opnemen' verband hield met 'dood'. Het gaat hier over het opgeven van je eigen leven, om verder voor Jezus te leven. Lees ook Matteüs 16:24-26.
- Markus 10:31 'Eerste zijn' kan ook betekenen: belangrijk zijn, en 'laatste zijn:' niet belangrijk zijn.
- Markus 10:47 Vroeger hadden de profeten gezegd dat de Redder van Israël (de 'Messias') uit de familie van David zou zijn. Daarom noemde hij Hem zo. Hij geloofde dat Jezus de beloofde Messias is.
