New International Version
Divorce(A)
10 Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the Jordan.(B) Again crowds of people came to him, and as was his custom, he taught them.(C)
2 Some Pharisees(D) came and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”
3 “What did Moses command you?” he replied.
4 They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.”(E)
5 “It was because your hearts were hard(F) that Moses wrote you this law,” Jesus replied. 6 “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’[a](G) 7 ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,[b] 8 and the two will become one flesh.’[c](H) So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
10 When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. 11 He answered, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her.(I) 12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”(J)
The Little Children and Jesus(K)
13 People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. 14 When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.(L) 15 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”(M) 16 And he took the children in his arms,(N) placed his hands on them and blessed them.
The Rich and the Kingdom of God(O)
17 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees(P) before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”(Q)
18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.’[d]”(R)
20 “Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.”
21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor,(S) and you will have treasure in heaven.(T) Then come, follow me.”(U)
22 At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.
23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich(V) to enter the kingdom of God!”
24 The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, “Children, how hard it is[e] to enter the kingdom of God!(W) 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”(X)
26 The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, “Who then can be saved?”
27 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”(Y)
28 Then Peter spoke up, “We have left everything to follow you!”(Z)
29 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel 30 will fail to receive a hundred times as much(AA) in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—along with persecutions—and in the age to come(AB) eternal life.(AC) 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”(AD)
Jesus Predicts His Death a Third Time(AE)
32 They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and the disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid. Again he took the Twelve(AF) aside and told them what was going to happen to him. 33 “We are going up to Jerusalem,”(AG) he said, “and the Son of Man(AH) will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law.(AI) They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, 34 who will mock him and spit on him, flog him(AJ) and kill him.(AK) Three days later(AL) he will rise.”(AM)
The Request of James and John(AN)
35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.”
36 “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.
37 They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.”(AO)
38 “You don’t know what you are asking,”(AP) Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup(AQ) I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?”(AR)
39 “We can,” they answered.
Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with,(AS) 40 but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.”
41 When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. 42 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,(AT) 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve,(AU) and to give his life as a ransom for many.”(AV)
Blind Bartimaeus Receives His Sight(AW)
46 Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means “son of Timaeus”), was sitting by the roadside begging. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth,(AX) he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David,(AY) have mercy on me!”
48 Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.”
So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” 50 Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.
51 “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him.
The blind man said, “Rabbi,(AZ) I want to see.”
52 “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.”(BA) Immediately he received his sight and followed(BB) Jesus along the road.

Controverse sur le divorce(A)
10 Jésus partit de là pour se rendre dans la partie de la Judée située de l’autre côté du Jourdain. De nouveau, les foules se rassemblèrent autour de lui et, selon son habitude, il se mit à les enseigner.
2 Des pharisiens s’approchèrent et lui posèrent une question : Un homme a-t-il le droit de divorcer d’avec sa femme ?
Ils voulaient par là lui tendre un piège.
3 Il leur répondit : Quel commandement Moïse vous a-t-il donné ?
4 – Moïse, lui dirent-ils, a permis de divorcer d’avec sa femme, à condition de lui donner un certificat de divorce[a].
5 Jésus leur répondit : C’est à cause de la dureté de votre cœur que Moïse a écrit ce commandement pour vous. 6 Mais, au commencement de la création, Dieu a créé l’être humain homme et femme[b].
7 C’est pourquoi l’homme laissera son père et sa mère pour s’attacher à sa femme[c] , 8 et les deux ne feront plus qu’un[d]. Ainsi, ils ne sont plus deux, ils font un. 9 Que l’homme ne sépare donc pas ce que Dieu a uni.
10 De retour à la maison, les disciples l’interrogèrent à nouveau sur ce sujet. 11 Il leur dit : Celui qui divorce et se remarie commet un adultère à l’égard de sa première femme. 12 Et si une femme divorce et se remarie, elle commet un adultère.
Jésus accueille des enfants(B)
13 Des gens amenèrent à Jésus de petits enfants pour qu’il pose les mains sur eux, mais les disciples leur firent des reproches.
14 Jésus le vit, et s’en indigna.
– Laissez donc les petits enfants venir à moi, ne les en empêchez pas, car le royaume de Dieu appartient à ceux qui leur ressemblent. 15 Vraiment, je vous l’assure : celui qui ne reçoit pas le royaume de Dieu comme un petit enfant, n’y entrera pas.
16 Là-dessus, il prit les enfants dans ses bras, posa les mains sur eux et les bénit.
Les riches et le royaume(C)
17 Comme il partait, un homme accourut, se jeta à genoux devant lui et lui demanda : Bon Maître, que dois-je faire pour obtenir la vie éternelle ?
18 – Pourquoi m’appelles-tu bon ? lui répondit Jésus. Personne n’est bon, sinon Dieu seul. 19 Tu connais les commandements : Ne commets pas de meurtre ; ne commets pas d’adultère ; ne commets pas de vol ; ne porte pas de faux témoignage ; ne fais de tort à personne ; honore ton père et ta mère[e].
20 – Maître, répondit l’homme, tout cela je l’ai appliqué depuis ma jeunesse.
21 Jésus posa sur cet homme un regard plein d’amour et lui dit : Il ne te manque qu’une chose : va, vends tout ce que tu possèdes, donne le produit de la vente aux pauvres et tu auras un trésor dans le ciel. Puis viens et suis-moi !
22 En entendant ces paroles, l’homme s’assombrit et s’en alla tout triste, car il était très riche.
23 Jésus parcourut du regard le cercle de ses disciples, puis il leur dit : Qu’il est difficile à ceux qui ont des richesses d’entrer dans le royaume de Dieu !
24 Cette parole les surprit, mais Jésus insista : Oui, mes enfants, qu’il est difficile[f] d’entrer dans le royaume de Dieu. 25 Il est plus facile à un chameau de passer par le trou d’une aiguille qu’à un riche d’entrer dans le royaume de Dieu !
26 Les disciples furent encore plus étonnés, et ils se demandaient entre eux : Mais alors, qui peut être sauvé ?
27 Jésus les regarda et leur dit : Aux hommes c’est impossible, mais non à Dieu. Car tout est possible à Dieu.
28 Alors Pierre lui dit : Nous, nous avons tout quitté pour te suivre.
Jésus répondit : 29 Vraiment, je vous l’assure : si quelqu’un quitte, à cause de moi et de l’Evangile, sa maison, ses frères, ses sœurs, sa mère, son père, ses enfants ou ses terres, 30 il recevra cent fois plus dès à présent : des maisons, des frères, des sœurs, des mères, des enfants, des terres, avec des persécutions ; et, dans le monde à venir, la vie éternelle. 31 Mais beaucoup de ceux qui sont maintenant les premiers seront parmi les derniers, et beaucoup de ceux qui sont maintenant les derniers seront parmi les premiers.
Ce qui attend Jésus à Jérusalem(D)
32 Ils étaient en route pour monter à Jérusalem. Jésus marchait en tête. L’angoisse s’était emparée des disciples et ceux qui les suivaient étaient dans la crainte.
Jésus prit de nouveau les Douze à part, et il se mit à leur dire ce qui allait arriver : 33 Voici, nous montons à Jérusalem. Le Fils de l’homme y sera livré aux chefs des prêtres et aux spécialistes de la Loi. Ils le condamneront à mort et le remettront entre les mains des païens. 34 Ils se moqueront de lui, lui cracheront au visage, le battront à coups de fouet et le mettront à mort. Puis, au bout de trois jours, il ressuscitera.
Grandeur et service(E)
35 Alors Jacques et Jean, les fils de Zébédée, s’approchèrent de Jésus et lui dirent : Maître, nous désirons que tu fasses pour nous ce que nous allons te demander.
36 – Que désirez-vous que je fasse pour vous ? leur demanda-t-il.
37 Ils répondirent : Accorde-nous de siéger l’un à ta droite et l’autre à ta gauche lorsque tu seras dans la gloire.
38 Mais Jésus leur dit : Vous ne vous rendez pas compte de ce que vous demandez ! Pouvez-vous boire la coupe que je vais boire, ou passer par le baptême que j’aurai à subir ?
39 – Oui, lui répondirent-ils, nous le pouvons.
Alors Jésus reprit : Vous boirez en effet la coupe que je vais boire, et vous subirez le baptême par lequel je vais passer, 40 mais quant à siéger à ma droite ou à ma gauche, il ne m’appartient pas de vous l’accorder : ces places reviendront à ceux pour qui elles ont été préparées.
41 En entendant cela, les dix autres s’indignèrent contre Jacques et Jean.
42 Alors Jésus les appela tous auprès de lui et leur dit : Vous savez ce qui se passe dans les nations : ceux que l’on considère comme les chefs politiques dominent sur leurs peuples et les grands personnages font peser leur autorité sur eux. 43 Il ne doit pas en être ainsi parmi vous. Au contraire : si quelqu’un veut être grand parmi vous, qu’il soit votre serviteur, 44 et si quelqu’un veut être le premier parmi vous, qu’il soit l’esclave de tous. 45 Car le Fils de l’homme n’est pas venu pour se faire servir, mais pour servir et donner sa vie en rançon pour beaucoup.
La guérison d’un aveugle(F)
46 Ils arrivèrent à Jéricho. Jésus et ses disciples sortaient de la ville, accompagnés d’une foule nombreuse.
Bartimée, fils de Timée, un mendiant aveugle, était assis au bord du chemin. 47 Lorsqu’il entendit que c’était Jésus de Nazareth, il se mit à crier : Jésus, Fils de David, aie pitié de moi !
48 Mais beaucoup le rabrouaient pour le faire taire.
Lui, cependant, criait de plus belle : Fils de David, aie pitié de moi !
49 Jésus s’arrêta et dit : Appelez-le !
On appela l’aveugle en lui disant : Courage, lève-toi, il t’appelle.
50 A ces mots, il jeta son manteau, se leva d’un bond et vint vers Jésus.
51 Jésus lui dit : Que veux-tu que je fasse pour toi ?
– Maître, lui répondit l’aveugle, fais que je puisse voir !
52 – Va, lui dit Jésus. Parce que tu as cru en moi, tu es guéri[g].

Again crowds gathered around him and, as was his custom, he again taught them. 2 [a]The Pharisees approached and asked, “Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?” They were testing him.(A) 3 He said to them in reply, “What did Moses command you?” 4 They replied, “Moses permitted him to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her.”(B) 5 But Jesus told them, “Because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment. 6 But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.(C) 7 For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother [and be joined to his wife],(D) 8 and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate.” 10 In the house the disciples again questioned him about this. 11 (E)He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; 12 and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”
Blessing of the Children. 13 (F)And people were bringing children to him that he might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them.(G) 14 When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15 Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child[b] will not enter it.”(H) 16 Then he embraced them and blessed them, placing his hands on them.
The Rich Man. 17 (I)As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 Jesus answered him, “Why do you call me good?[c] No one is good but God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; honor your father and your mother.’”(J) 20 He replied and said to him, “Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth.” 21 Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, “You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to [the] poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” 22 At that statement his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.
23 [d]Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!”(K) 24 The disciples were amazed at his words. So Jesus again said to them in reply, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to pass through [the] eye of [a] needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 They were exceedingly astonished and said among themselves, “Then who can be saved?” 27 Jesus looked at them and said, “For human beings it is impossible, but not for God. The Third Prediction of the Passion. 32 (M)They were on the way, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus went ahead of them. They were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. Taking the Twelve aside again, he began to tell them what was going to happen to him. 33 “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death and hand him over to the Gentiles 34 who will mock him, spit upon him, scourge him, and put him to death, but after three days he will rise.”
Ambition of James and John. 35 (N)Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” 36 He replied, “What do you wish [me] to do for you?” 37 They answered him, “Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left.” 38 [e](O)Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I drink or be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 They said to him, “We can.” Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink, you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; 40 but to sit at my right or at my left is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared.” 41 When the ten heard this, they became indignant at James and John. 42 [f]Jesus summoned them and said to them,(P) “You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. 43 But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; 44 whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. 45 For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
The Blind Bartimaeus.[g] 46 They came to Jericho.(Q) And as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a sizable crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus, sat by the roadside begging. 47 On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.” 48 And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he kept calling out all the more, “Son of David, have pity on me.” 49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take courage; get up, he is calling you.” 50 He threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus. 51 Jesus said to him in reply, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man replied to him, “Master, I want to see.” 52 Jesus told him, “Go your way; your faith has saved you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way.

- 10:2–9 In the dialogue between Jesus and the Pharisees on the subject of divorce, Jesus declares that the law of Moses permitted divorce (Dt 24:1) only because of the hardness of your hearts (Mk 10:4–5). In citing Gn 1:27 and 2:24 Jesus proclaims permanence to be the divine intent from the beginning concerning human marriage (Mk 10:6–8). He reaffirms this with the declaration that what God has joined together, no human being must separate (Mk 10:9). See further the notes on Mt 5:31–32; 19:3–9.
- 10:15 Whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child: i.e., in total dependence upon and obedience to the gospel; cf. Mt 18:3–4.
- 10:18 Why do you call me good?: Jesus repudiates the term “good” for himself and directs it to God, the source of all goodness who alone can grant the gift of eternal life; cf. Mt 19:16–17.
- 10:23–27 In the Old Testament wealth and material goods are considered a sign of God’s favor (Jb 1:10; Ps 128:1–2; Is 3:10). The words of Jesus in Mk 10:23–25 provoke astonishment among the disciples because of their apparent contradiction of the Old Testament concept (Mk 10:24, 26). Since wealth, power, and merit generate false security, Jesus rejects them utterly as a claim to enter the kingdom. Achievement of salvation is beyond human capability and depends solely on the goodness of God who offers it as a gift (Mk 10:27).
- 10:38–40 Can you drink the cup…I am baptized?: the metaphor of drinking the cup is used in the Old Testament to refer to acceptance of the destiny assigned by God; see note on Psalm 11:6. In Jesus’ case, this involves divine judgment on sin that Jesus the innocent one is to expiate on behalf of the guilty (Mk 14:24; Is 53:5). His baptism is to be his crucifixion and death for the salvation of the human race; cf. Lk 12:50. The request of James and John for a share in the glory (Mk 10:35–37) must of necessity involve a share in Jesus’ sufferings, the endurance of tribulation and suffering for the gospel (Mk 10:39). The authority of assigning places of honor in the kingdom is reserved to God (Mk 10:40).
- 10:42–45 Whatever authority is to be exercised by the disciples must, like that of Jesus, be rendered as service to others (Mk 10:45) rather than for personal aggrandizement (Mk 10:42–44). The service of Jesus is his passion and death for the sins of the human race (Mk 10:45); cf. Mk 14:24; Is 53:11–12; Mt 26:28; Lk 22:19–20.
