⁴² Jesus called them over and said to them, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles dominate^(A) them, and their men of high positions exercise power over them. ⁴³ But it must not be like that among you.^(B) On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,^{(C) 44} and whoever wants to be first among you must be a slave^(D) to all. ⁴⁵ For even the Son of Man^(E) did not come to be served, but to serve,^(F) and to give His life^(G)—a ransom^(H) for many.”^[a](I)

The Meaning of Footwashing

¹² When Jesus had washed their feet and put on His robe, He reclined^[a] again and said to them, “Do you know what I have done for you? ¹³ You call Me Teacher and Lord. This is well said, for I am. ¹⁴ So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.^{(A) 15} For I have given you an example^(B) that you also should do just as I have done for you.

¹⁶ “I assure you: A slave is not greater than his master,^[b](C) and a messenger is not greater than the one who sent him. ¹⁷ If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.^(D)

Cleansing the Temple Complex

¹⁵ They came to Jerusalem,^(A) and He went into the temple complex^(B) and began to throw out those buying and selling in the temple. He overturned the money changers’^(C) tables and the chairs of those selling doves, ¹⁶ and would not permit anyone to carry goods through the temple complex.

¹⁷ Then He began to teach them: “Is it not written,^(D) My house^(E) will be called a house of prayer^(F) for all nations?^[a] But you have made it a den of thieves!”^{(G)[b] 18} Then the chief priests and the scribes^(H) heard it and started looking for a way to destroy Him. For they were afraid^(I) of Him, because the whole crowd was astonished by His teaching.
