⁴¹ When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John.

³ Do nothing from selfish ambition or empty conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves.^(A)

¹⁰ love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor.

⁵ Or do you suppose that the scripture speaks to no purpose? Does the spirit that God caused to dwell^[a] in us desire envy?^(A)

The Dispute about Greatness

²⁴ A dispute also arose among them as to which one of them was to be regarded as the greatest.^(A)

Who Is the Greatest?

³³ Then they came to Capernaum, and when he was in the house he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the way?” ³⁴ But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another who was the greatest.^{(A) 35} He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, “Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all.”^{(B) 36} Then he took a little child and put it among them, and taking it in his arms he said to them,^(C)
