Some Pharisees(A) approached Him to test(B) Him. They asked, “Is it lawful(C) for a man to divorce(D) his wife?”(E)

He replied to them, “What did Moses(F) command you?”

They said, “Moses permitted us to write divorce papers(G) and send her away.”(H)

But Jesus told them, “He wrote this command for you because of the hardness of your hearts.(I) But from the beginning(J) of creation(K) God[a] made them male and female.(L)[b]

For this reason a man will leave(M)
his father and mother
[and be joined to his wife],[c]
and the two will become one flesh.(N)[d]

So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, man must not separate.”(O)

10 Now in the house the disciples questioned Him again about this matter. 11 And He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife(P) and marries(Q) another commits adultery(R) against her. 12 Also, if she divorces her husband(S) and marries another, she commits adultery.”

Pharisees came to Jesus to test Him [intending to trick Him into saying something wrong], and asked Him, “Is it lawful [according to Scripture] for a man to divorce his wife and send her away?” He replied to them, “What did Moses command you?” They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce and to send her away.”(A) But Jesus said to them, “Because of your hardness of hearts [your callousness and insensitivity toward your wives and the [a]provision of God] he wrote you this precept. But from the beginning of creation God made them male and female.(B) For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother [to establish a home with his wife],(C) and the two shall become one flesh; so that they are no longer two, but [are united as] one flesh.(D) Therefore, what God has united and joined together, man must not separate [by divorce].”

10 In the house the disciples began questioning Him again about this. 11 And He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her; 12 and if a woman divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”
