The Messiah’s Herald

The beginning(A) of the gospel(B) of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.[a](C) As it is written in Isaiah(D) the prophet:[b](E)

See, I am sending my messenger(F) ahead of you;
he will prepare your way.[c][d] (G)
A voice of one crying out in the wilderness:(H)
Prepare the way for the Lord;(I)
make his paths straight![e](J)

John came baptizing[f](K) in the wilderness(L) and proclaiming a baptism of repentance(M) for the forgiveness(N) of sins.(O) The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem(P) were going out to him, and they were baptized by him in the Jordan(Q) River, confessing(R) their sins.(S) John wore a camel-hair garment with a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts(T) and wild honey.(U)

He proclaimed, “One who is more powerful(V) than I am is coming after me.(W) I am not worthy(X) to stoop down and untie the strap of his sandals.(Y) I baptize you with[g] water,(Z) but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”(AA)

The Baptism of Jesus

In(AB) those days Jesus came from Nazareth(AC) in Galilee(AD) and was baptized in the Jordan by John. 10 As soon as he came up out of the water, he saw the heavens(AE) being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice(AF) came from heaven:(AG) “You are my beloved(AH) Son;(AI) with you I am well-pleased.”(AJ)

The Temptation of Jesus

12 Immediately(AK) the Spirit(AL) drove(AM) him into the wilderness.(AN) 13 He was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted(AO) by Satan.(AP) He was with the wild animals,(AQ) and the angels(AR) were serving him.

Ministry in Galilee

14 After(AS) John was arrested,(AT) Jesus went to Galilee,(AU) proclaiming(AV) the good news[h][i](AW) of God:(AX) 15 “The time(AY) is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God(AZ) has come(BA) near.(BB) Repent(BC) and believe(BD) the good news!”

The First Disciples

16 As(BE) he passed alongside the Sea of Galilee,(BF) he saw Simon(BG) and Andrew,(BH) Simon’s brother, casting a net into the sea(BI)—for they were fishermen. 17 “Follow me,”(BJ) Jesus told them, “and I will make you fish for[j](BK) people.”(BL) 18 Immediately they left their nets and followed(BM) him.(BN) 19 Going on a little farther, he saw James(BO) the son of Zebedee(BP) and his brother John(BQ) in a boat putting their nets in order. 20 Immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.(BR)

Driving Out an Unclean Spirit

21 They(BS) went into Capernaum,(BT) and right away he entered the synagogue(BU) on the Sabbath(BV) and began to teach.(BW) 22 They were astonished(BX) at his teaching(BY) because he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not like the scribes.

23 Just then a man with an unclean(BZ) spirit(CA) was in their synagogue.(CB) He cried out, 24 “What do you have to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?(CC) Have you come to destroy(CD) us? I know who you are—the Holy(CE) One of God!” (CF)

25 Jesus rebuked(CG) him saying, “Be silent,(CH) and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit threw him into convulsions,(CI) shouted with a loud voice, and came out of him.

27 They were all amazed,(CJ) and so they began to ask(CK) each other, “What is this? A new teaching(CL) with authority![k](CM) He commands even the unclean(CN) spirits,(CO) and they obey him.” 28 At once the news about him spread throughout the entire vicinity of Galilee.(CP)

Healings at Capernaum

29 As(CQ) soon as they left the synagogue,(CR) they went into Simon(CS) and Andrew’s(CT) house(CU) with James(CV) and John.(CW) 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was lying in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once. 31 So he went to her, took her by the hand, and raised her up.(CX) The fever(CY) left her,[l] and she began to serve(CZ) them.(DA)

32 When(DB) evening came, after the sun had set, they brought to him all those who were sick(DC) and demon-possessed.(DD) 33 The whole town was assembled at the door, 34 and he healed(DE) many who were sick with various diseases(DF) and drove out(DG) many demons.(DH) And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.(DI)

Preaching in Galilee

35 Very(DJ) early in the morning, while it was still dark, he got up, went out, and made his way to a deserted place;(DK) and there he was praying.(DL) 36 Simon(DM) and his companions searched for him, 37 and when they found him they said, “Everyone is looking for you.”

38 And he said to them, “Let’s go on to the neighboring villages so that I may preach(DN) there too. This is why I have come.”

A Man Cleansed

39 He went into all of Galilee,(DO) preaching in their synagogues(DP) and driving out demons. 40 Then(DQ) a man with leprosy[m](DR) came to him and, on his knees,[n](DS) begged him, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”(DT) 41 Moved with compassion,[o](DU) Jesus reached out his hand and touched(DV) him. “I am willing,” he told him. “Be made clean.” 42 Immediately the leprosy(DW) left him, and he was made clean. 43 Then he sternly warned(DX) him and sent him away(DY) at once, 44 telling him, “See that you say nothing to anyone;(DZ) but go and show(EA) yourself to the priest,(EB) and offer(EC) what Moses commanded for your cleansing,(ED) as a testimony(EE) to them.”[p] 45 Yet he went out and began to proclaim(EF) it widely and to spread the news,(EG) with the result that Jesus could no longer enter a town openly. But he was out in deserted places, and they came to him from everywhere.

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

As it is written in Esaias, the prophet, Lo! I send mine angel before thy face, that shall make thy way ready before thee.

The voice of a crier in desert, Make ye ready the way of the Lord, make ye his paths right. [The voice of one crying in desert, Make ye ready the way of the Lord, make ye his paths rightful.]

John was in desert baptizing, and preaching the baptism of penance, into remission of sins.

And all the country of Judaea went out to him, and all men of Jerusalem; and they were baptized of him in the flume Jordan [and were baptized of him in the flood of Jordan], acknowledging their sins.

And John was clothed with hairs of camels, and a girdle of skin was about his loins; and he ate honeysuckles, and wild honey,[a]

and preached, and said [saying], A stronger than I shall come after me, and I am not worthy to kneel down, and unloose [the thong of] his shoes.

I have baptized you in water; but he shall baptize you in the Holy Ghost.

And it was done in those days, Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan.

10 And at once he went up of the water, and saw heavens opened, and the Holy Ghost coming down as a culver [And anon he ascending up of the water, saw heavens opened, and the Spirit coming down as a culver], and dwelling on him.

11 And a voice was made from heavens, Thou art my loved Son, in thee I am pleased.

12 And at once the Spirit put him forth into desert. [And anon the Spirit putted out him into desert.]

13 And he was in desert forty days and forty nights, and was tempted of Satan, and he was with beasts [and was with beasts], and angels ministered to him.

14 But after that John was taken, Jesus came into Galilee, and preached the gospel of the kingdom of God [preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God],

15 and said [and saying], That the time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God shall come nigh; do ye penance [repent ye], and believe ye to the gospel.

16 And as he passed beside the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon, and Andrew, his brother, casting their nets into the sea; for they were fishers.

17 And Jesus said to them, Come ye after me; [and] I shall make you to be made fishers of men.

18 And at once they left the nets, and followed him. [And anon the nets forsaken, they followed him.]

19 And he went forth from thence a little, and saw James of Zebedee, and John, his brother, in a boat making their nets. [And he gone forth thence a little, saw James of Zebedee, and John, his brother, and them in the boat making nets.]

20 And at once [And anon] he called them; and they left Zebedee, their father, in the boat with hired servants, and they followed him.

21 And they entered into Capernaum, and at once in the sabbaths [And they went forth into Capernaum, and anon in the sabbaths], he went into the synagogue, and taught them.

22 And they wondered on his teaching; for he taught them, as he that had power, and not as [the] scribes.

23 And in the synagogue of them was a man in an unclean spirit, and he cried out,

24 and said [saying], What to us and to thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? hast thou come to destroy us? I know that thou art the holy of God.

25 And Jesus threatened him, and said [saying], Wax [thou] dumb, and go out of the man.

26 And the unclean spirit wrenching him, and crying with a great voice, went out from him.

27 And all men wondered, so that they sought within themselves, and said [And all men wondered, so that they asked among themselves, saying], What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for in power he commandeth to unclean spirits, and they obey to him.

28 And the fame of him went forth at once [And the tale, or tiding, of him went forth anon] into all the country of Galilee.

29 And at once they went out of the synagogue, and came into the house of Simon and of Andrew, with James and John. [And anon they going out of the synagogue came into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.]

30 And the mother of Simon's wife lay sick in the fevers [lay sick in fevers]; and anon they say to him of her.

31 And he came nigh, and areared her [up], and when he had taken her hand, at once the fever left her, and she served them. [And he coming to, reared her up, the hand of her taken, and anon the fever left her, and she ministered to them.]

32 But when the eventide was come, and the sun was gone down, they brought to him all that were of mal-ease, and them that had fiends. [Forsooth the evening made, when the sun went down, they brought to him all having evil, and having devils.]

33 And all the city was gathered at the gate.

34 And he healed many, that had diverse sicknesses, and he cast out many fiends [And he healed many that were travailed with diverse sores, and he cast out many devils], and he suffered them not to speak, for they knew him.

35 And he rose full early, and went out [And in the morrowing full early he rising], and went into a desert place, and prayed there.

36 And Simon followed him, and they that were with him.

37 And when they had found him, they said to him, That all men seek thee.

38 And he said to them, Go we into the next towns and cities, that I preach also there, for thereto I came.

39 And he preached in the synagogues of them, and in all Galilee, and casted out fiends.

40 And a leprous man came to him, and besought [beseeching him], [and] kneeling, and said, If thou wilt, thou mayest cleanse me.

41 And Jesus had mercy on him, and stretched out his hand, and touched him, and said to him [Forsooth Jesus, having mercy on him, stretched out his hand, and, touching him, saith to him], I will, be thou made clean.

42 And when he had said this, at once [anon] the leprosy parted away from him, and he was cleansed.

43 And Jesus threatened him, and at once put him out, [And he threatened him, and anon cast him out,]

44 and said to him [and saith to him], See thou, say to no man; but go, show thee to the prince of priests, and offer for thy cleansing into witnessing to them, those things that Moses bade [and offer for thy cleansing those things that Moses bade, into witnessing to them].

45 And he went out, and began to preach, and to publish the word, so that now he might not go openly into the city [so that now he might not openly enter into the city], but be withoutforth in desert places; and they came to him on all sides.

John Prepares the Way(A)

This is the beginning of the Good News about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

The prophet Isaiah wrote,

“I am sending my messenger ahead of you
to prepare the way for you.”
“A voice cries out in the desert:
‘Prepare the way for the Lord!
Make his paths straight!’ ”

John the Baptizer was in the desert telling people about a baptism of repentance [a] for the forgiveness of sins. All Judea and all the people of Jerusalem went to him. As they confessed their sins, he baptized them in the Jordan River.

John was dressed in clothes made from camel’s hair. He wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey.

He announced, “The one who comes after me is more powerful than I. I am not worthy to bend down and untie his sandal straps. I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

John Baptizes Jesus(B)

At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan River. 10 As Jesus came out of the water, he saw heaven split open and the Spirit coming down to him as a dove. 11 A voice from heaven said, “You are my Son, whom I love. I am pleased with you.”

Satan Tempts Jesus(C)

12 At once the Spirit brought him into the desert, 13 where he was tempted by Satan for 40 days. He was there with the wild animals, and the angels took care of him.

Calling of the First Disciples(D)

14 After John had been put in prison, Jesus went to Galilee and told people the Good News of God. 15 He said, “The time has come, and God’s kingdom is near. Change the way you think and act, and believe the Good News.”

16 As he was going along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew. They were throwing a net into the sea because they were fishermen. 17 Jesus said to them, “Come, follow me! I will teach you how to catch people instead of fish.” 18 They immediately left their nets and followed him.

19 As Jesus went on a little farther, he saw James and John, the sons of Zebedee. They were in a boat preparing their nets ⌞to go fishing⌟. 20 He immediately called them, and they left their father Zebedee and the hired men in the boat and followed Jesus.

Jesus Forces an Evil Spirit out of a Man(E)

21 Then they went to Capernaum. On the next day of rest—a holy day, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22 The people were amazed at his teachings. Unlike their experts in Moses’ Teachings, he taught them with authority.

23 At that time there was a man in the synagogue who was controlled by an evil spirit. He shouted, 24 “What do you want with us, Jesus from Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”

25 Jesus ordered the spirit, “Keep quiet, and come out of him!” 26 The evil spirit threw the man into convulsions and came out of him with a loud shriek.

27 Everyone was stunned. They said to each other, “What is this? This is a new teaching that has authority behind it! He gives orders to evil spirits, and they obey him.”

28 The news about him spread quickly throughout the surrounding region of Galilee.

Jesus Cures Simon’s Mother-in-Law and Many Others(F)

29 After they left the synagogue, they went directly to the house of Simon and Andrew. James and John went with them. 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever. The first thing they did was to tell Jesus about her. 31 Jesus went to her, took her hand, and helped her get up. The fever went away, and she prepared a meal for them.

32 In the evening, when the sun had set, people brought to him everyone who was sick and those possessed by demons. 33 The whole city had gathered at his door. 34 He cured many who were sick with various diseases and forced many demons out of people. However, he would not allow the demons to speak. After all, they knew who he was.

Spreading the Good News in Galilee(G)

35 In the morning, long before sunrise, Jesus went to a place where he could be alone to pray. 36 Simon and his friends searched for him. 37 When they found him, they told him, “Everyone is looking for you.”

38 Jesus said to them, “Let’s go somewhere else, to the small towns that are nearby. I have to spread ⌞the Good News⌟ in them also. This is why I have come.”

39 So he went to spread ⌞the Good News⌟ in the synagogues all over Galilee, and he forced demons out of people.

Jesus Cures a Man with a Skin Disease(H)

40 Then a man with a serious skin disease came to him. The man fell to his knees and begged Jesus, “If you’re willing, you can make me clean.” [b]

41 Jesus felt sorry for him, reached out, touched him, and said, “I’m willing. So be clean!”

42 Immediately, his skin disease went away, and he was clean.

43 Jesus sent him away at once and warned him, 44 “Don’t tell anyone about this! Instead, show yourself to the priest. Then offer the sacrifices which Moses commanded as proof to people that you are clean.”

45 When the man left, he began to talk freely. He spread his story so widely that Jesus could no longer enter any city openly. Instead, he stayed in places where he could be alone. But people still kept coming to him from everywhere.
