Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy^(A)

⁴⁰ A man with leprosy^[a] came to him and begged him on his knees,^(B) “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”

⁴¹ Jesus was indignant.^[b] He reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” ⁴² Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.

⁴³ Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning: ⁴⁴ “See that you don’t tell this to anyone.^(C) But go, show yourself to the priest^(D) and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing,^(E) as a testimony to them.”

³⁹ He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.”^{(A) 40} But they laughed at him.

After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. ⁴¹ He took her by the hand^(B) and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”).^{(C) 42} Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. ⁴³ He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this,^(D) and told them to give her something to eat.

³² There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk,^(A) and they begged Jesus to place his hand on^(B) him.

³³ After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spit^(C) and touched the man’s tongue. ³⁴ He looked up to heaven^(D) and with a deep sigh^(E) said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means “Be opened!”). ³⁵ At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.^(F)

³⁶ Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone.^(G) But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it.

²⁴ He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”

²⁵ Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. ²⁶ Jesus sent him home, saying, “Don’t even go into^[a] the village.”

Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah^(A)

²⁷ Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”

²⁸ They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;^(B) others say Elijah;^(C) and still others, one of the prophets.”

²⁹ “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”^(D)

³⁰ Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.^(E)

⁹ As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone^(A) what they had seen until the Son of Man^(B) had risen from the dead.

³⁰ and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one knows about this.”^(A)
