The Authority of Jesus

28 And when Jesus finished these sayings, (A)the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 (B)for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.

But we have renounced (A)disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice[a] cunning or (B)to tamper with God's word, but (C)by the open statement of the truth (D)we would commend ourselves to everyone's conscience in the sight of God.

  1. 2 Corinthians 4:2 Greek to walk in

21 And all who heard him were amazed and said, “Is not this the man who (A)made havoc (B)in Jerusalem of those who called upon this name? And has he not come here for this purpose, to bring them bound before the chief priests?” 22 But Saul (C)increased all the more in strength, and (D)confounded the Jews who lived in Damascus by proving (E)that Jesus was the Christ.

12 For (A)the word of God is living and (B)active, (C)sharper than any (D)two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and (E)discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And (F)no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are (G)naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands properly,[a] holding to (A)the tradition of (B)the elders, and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash.[b] And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as (C)the washing of (D)cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.[c]) And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk according to (E)the tradition of (F)the elders, (G)but eat with (H)defiled hands?” And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you (I)hypocrites, as it is written,

(J)“‘This people honors me with their lips,
    but their heart is far from me;
in vain do they worship me,
    teaching as (K)doctrines the commandments of men.’

You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.”

And he said to them, “You have a fine way of (L)rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! 10 For Moses said, (M)‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, (N)‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ 11 But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, “Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban”’ (that is, given to God)[d] 12 then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, 13 thus (O)making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do.”

  1. Mark 7:3 Greek unless they wash the hands with a fist, probably indicating a kind of ceremonial washing
  2. Mark 7:4 Greek unless they baptize; some manuscripts unless they purify themselves
  3. Mark 7:4 Some manuscripts omit and dining couches
  4. Mark 7:11 Or an offering

16 “Woe to (A)you, (B)blind guides, who say, (C)‘If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’ 17 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or (D)the temple that has made the gold sacred? 18 And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by (E)the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.’ 19 You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or (F)the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20 So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21 And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by (G)him who dwells in it. 22 And whoever swears by (H)heaven swears by (I)the throne of God and by (J)him who sits upon it.

23 (K)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For (L)you tithe mint and dill and (M)cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: (N)justice and mercy and faithfulness. (O)These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 24 You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing (P)a camel!
