The First Disciples

¹⁶ As^(A) he passed alongside the Sea of Galilee,^(B) he saw Simon^(C) and Andrew,^(D) Simon’s brother, casting a net into the sea^(E)—for they were fishermen. ¹⁷ “Follow me,”^(F) Jesus told them, “and I will make you fish for^[a](G) people.”^{(H) 18} Immediately they left their nets and followed^(I) him.^{(J) 19} Going on a little farther, he saw James^(K) the son of Zebedee^(L) and his brother John^(M) in a boat putting their nets in order. ²⁰ Immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.^(N)

Driving Out an Unclean Spirit

²¹ They^(O) went into Capernaum,^(P) and right away he entered the synagogue^(Q) on the Sabbath^(R) and began to teach.^{(S) 22} They were astonished^(T) at his teaching^(U) because he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not like the scribes.

²³ Just then a man with an unclean^(V) spirit^(W) was in their synagogue.^(X) He cried out, ²⁴ “What do you have to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?^(Y) Have you come to destroy^(Z) us? I know who you are—the Holy^(AA) One of God!” ^(AB)

²⁵ Jesus rebuked^(AC) him saying, “Be silent,^(AD) and come out of him!” ²⁶ And the unclean spirit threw him into convulsions,^(AE) shouted with a loud voice, and came out of him.

²⁷ They were all amazed,^(AF) and so they began to ask^(AG) each other, “What is this? A new teaching^(AH) with authority!^[b](AI) He commands even the unclean^(AJ) spirits,^(AK) and they obey him.” ²⁸ At once the news about him spread throughout the entire vicinity of Galilee.^(AL)
