Jesus Announces the Good News^(A)

¹⁴ After John^(B) was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee,^(C) proclaiming the good news of God.^{(D) 15} “The time has come,”^(E) he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe^(F) the good news!”^(G)

The Coming of the Kingdom of God^(A)

²⁰ Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come,^(B) Jesus replied, “The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, ²¹ nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’^(C) because the kingdom of God is in your midst.”^[a]

The Parable of the Mustard Seed^(A)

³⁰ Again he said, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like,^(B) or what parable shall we use to describe it? ³¹ It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. ³² Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.”

³⁶ Jesus said, “My kingdom^(A) is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders.^(B) But now my kingdom is from another place.”^(C)

³⁷ “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.

Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth.^(D) Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”^(E)
