John the Baptist Prepares the Way^(A)

1 The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah,^[a] the Son of God,^[b](B)

¹¹ And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life,^(A) and this life is in his Son.^{(B) 12} Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.^(C)

³¹ But these are written that you may believe^[a](A) that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God,^(B) and that by believing you may have life in his name.^(C)

⁵ While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.^(A) Listen to him!”^(B)

³ The tempter^(A) came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God,^(B) tell these stones to become bread.”

² just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first^(A) were eyewitnesses^(B) and servants of the word.^{(C) 3} With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account^(D) for you, most excellent^(E) Theophilus,^(F)

³³ Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”^(A)

¹⁷ And a voice from heaven^(A) said, “This is my Son,^(B) whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”^(C)

The Incarnation of the Word of Life

1 That which was from the beginning,^(A) which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes,^(B) which we have looked at and our hands have touched^(C)—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. ² The life appeared;^(D) we have seen it and testify to it,^(E) and we proclaim to you the eternal life,^(F) which was with the Father and has appeared to us. ³ We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard,^(G) so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.^(H)
