Then He said to them, “I assure you:(A) There are some standing here who will not taste death(B) until they see the kingdom of God come in power.”(C)

The Transfiguration

After(D) six days(E) Jesus took Peter, James, and John(F) and led them up on a high mountain(G) by themselves to be alone. He was transformed[a](H) in front of them, and His clothes(I) became dazzling—extremely white(J) as no launderer on earth could whiten(K) them. Elijah(L) appeared to them with Moses,(M) and they were talking with Jesus.

Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi,(N) it’s good(O) for us to be here! Let us make three tabernacles:(P) one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”— because he did not know what he should say,(Q) since they were terrified.(R)

A cloud(S) appeared, overshadowing(T) them, and a voice(U) came from the cloud:(V)

This is My beloved(W) Son;(X)
listen to Him!(Y)

Then suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus alone.

As(Z) they were coming down from the mountain,(AA) He ordered them to tell no one what they had seen(AB) until the Son of Man(AC) had risen(AD) from the dead.(AE) 10 They kept this word(AF) to themselves, discussing what “rising from the dead” meant.

11 Then they began to question Him, “Why do the scribes(AG) say that Elijah must come first?”(AH)

12 “Elijah does come first and restores(AI) everything,”(AJ) He replied. “How then is it written(AK) about the Son of Man that He must suffer(AL) many things and be treated with contempt?(AM) 13 But I tell you that Elijah really has come, and they did whatever they pleased to him, just as it is written(AN) about him.”

The Power of Faith over a Demon

14 When(AO) they came to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and scribes disputing(AP) with them. 15 All of a sudden, when the whole crowd saw Him, they were amazed[b] and ran to greet Him. 16 Then He asked them, “What are you arguing with them about?”

17 Out of the crowd, one man answered Him, “Teacher,(AQ) I brought my son to You. He has a spirit(AR) that makes him unable to speak.(AS) 18 Wherever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes rigid. So I asked Your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn’t.”

19 He replied to them, “You unbelieving(AT) generation! How long will I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him to Me.” 20 So they brought him to Him. When the spirit saw Him, it immediately convulsed the boy. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth. 21 “How long has this been happening to him?” Jesus asked his father.

“From childhood,” he said. 22 “And many times it has thrown him into fire or water to destroy(AU) him. But if You can do anything, have compassion(AV) on us and help us.”

23 Then Jesus said to him, “‘If You can’?[c][d] Everything is possible(AW) to the one who believes.”(AX)

24 Immediately the father of the boy cried out, “I do believe! Help my unbelief.”

25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was rapidly coming together, He rebuked(AY) the unclean(AZ) spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf(BA) spirit,[e] I command you: come out of him and never enter him again!”

26 Then it came out, shrieking and convulsing(BB) him[f] violently. The boy became like a corpse, so that many said, “He’s dead.” 27 But Jesus, taking him by the hand, raised him,(BC) and he stood up.

28 After He went into a house, His disciples asked Him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

29 And He told them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer(BD) [and fasting].”[g](BE)

The Second Prediction of His Death

30 Then(BF) they left that place and made their way through Galilee, but He did not want anyone to know it.(BG) 31 For He was teaching(BH) His disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man(BI) is being betrayed[h] into the hands of men. They will kill Him, and after He is killed, He will rise(BJ) three days later.”(BK) 32 But they did not understand this statement, and they were afraid to ask Him.(BL)

Who is the Greatest?

33 Then(BM) they came to Capernaum.(BN) When He was in the house,(BO) He asked them, “What were you arguing about on the way?”(BP) 34 But they were silent,(BQ) because on the way they had been arguing with one another about who was the greatest.(BR) 35 Sitting down, He called the Twelve(BS) and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”(BT) 36 Then He took a child,(BU) had him stand among them, and taking him in His arms, He said to them, 37 “Whoever welcomes[i] one little child such as this in My name(BV) welcomes Me. And whoever welcomes Me does not welcome Me, but Him who sent(BW) Me.”(BX)

In His Name

38 John(BY) said to Him, “Teacher,(BZ) we saw someone[j] driving out demons(CA) in Your name,(CB) and we tried to stop him because he wasn’t following us.”(CC)

39 “Don’t stop him,” said Jesus, “because there is no one who will perform a miracle(CD) in My name who can soon afterward speak evil of Me. 40 For whoever is not against us is for us.(CE) 41 And whoever gives you a cup of water to drink(CF) because of My name,[k] since you belong to the Messiah(CG)—I assure you:(CH) He will never lose his reward.(CI)

Warnings from Jesus

42 “But whoever causes the downfall of one of these little ones who believe in Me(CJ)—it would be better for him if a heavy millstone[l](CK) were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea. 43 And if your hand causes your downfall, cut it off.(CL) It is better for you to enter life maimed(CM) than to have two hands and go to hell—the unquenchable fire,(CN) [44 where

Their worm does not die,
and the fire is not quenched.][m](CO)[n]

45 And if your foot causes your downfall,(CP) cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame(CQ) than to have two feet and be thrown into hell— [the unquenchable fire,(CR) 46 where

Their worm does not die,
and the fire is not quenched.][o](CS)[p]

47 And if your eye causes your downfall, gouge it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God(CT) with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown(CU) into hell,(CV) 48 where

Their worm does not die,
and the fire is not quenched.[q]

49 For everyone will be salted with fire.[r](CW)[s] 50 Salt is good, but if the salt should lose its flavor, how can you make it salty?(CX) Have salt(CY) among yourselves and be at peace(CZ) with one another.”

The Question of Divorce

10 He(DA) set out from there and went to the region of Judea(DB) and across the Jordan.(DC) Then crowds converged on Him again and, as He usually did, He began teaching(DD) them once more. Some Pharisees(DE) approached Him to test(DF) Him. They asked, “Is it lawful(DG) for a man to divorce(DH) his wife?”(DI)

He replied to them, “What did Moses(DJ) command you?”

They said, “Moses permitted us to write divorce papers(DK) and send her away.”(DL)

But Jesus told them, “He wrote this command for you because of the hardness of your hearts.(DM) But from the beginning(DN) of creation(DO) God[t] made them male and female.(DP)[u]

For this reason a man will leave(DQ)
his father and mother
[and be joined to his wife],[v]
and the two will become one flesh.(DR)[w]

So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, man must not separate.”(DS)

10 Now in the house the disciples questioned Him again about this matter. 11 And He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife(DT) and marries(DU) another commits adultery(DV) against her. 12 Also, if she divorces her husband(DW) and marries another, she commits adultery.”

Blessing the Children

13 Some(DX) people were bringing little children(DY) to Him so He might touch them, but His disciples rebuked(DZ) them. 14 When Jesus saw it, He was indignant(EA) and said to them, “Let the little children come to Me.(EB) Don’t stop(EC) them, for the kingdom of God(ED) belongs to such as these. 15 I assure you:(EE) Whoever does not welcome[x](EF) the kingdom of God like a little child(EG) will never enter it.” 16 After taking them in His arms, He laid His hands on(EH) them and blessed(EI) them.

The Rich Young Ruler

17 As(EJ) He was setting out on a journey,(EK) a man ran up, knelt down(EL) before Him, and asked Him, “Good(EM) Teacher,(EN) what must I do to inherit(EO) eternal life?”(EP)

18 “Why do you call Me good?” Jesus asked him. “No one is good but One—God.(EQ) 19 You know the commandments:

Do not murder;(ER)
do not commit adultery;(ES)
do not steal;(ET)
do not bear false witness;(EU)
do not defraud;(EV)
honor(EW) your father and mother.(EX)[y]

20 He said to Him, “Teacher,(EY) I have kept all these from my youth.”

21 Then, looking at him, Jesus loved him(EZ) and said to him, “You lack one thing: Go, sell all you have and give to the poor,(FA) and you will have treasure(FB) in heaven.(FC) Then come,[z] follow Me.”(FD) 22 But he was stunned[aa] at this demand, and he went away grieving,(FE) because he had many possessions.(FF)

Possessions and the Kingdom

23 Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How hard it is for those who have wealth(FG) to enter the kingdom of God!”(FH) 24 But the disciples were astonished at His words. Again Jesus said to them, “Children,(FI) how hard it is[ab] to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich(FJ) person to enter the kingdom of God.”

26 So they were even more astonished, saying to one another, “Then who can be saved?”(FK)

27 Looking at them, Jesus said, “With men it is impossible,(FL) but not with God, because all things are possible with God.”

28 Peter(FM) began to tell Him, “Look, we have left everything and followed You.”

29 “I assure you,”(FN) Jesus said, “there is no one who has left house, brothers or sisters, mother or father,[ac] children, or fields because of Me and the gospel,(FO) 30 who will not receive 100 times(FP) more, now at this time(FQ)—houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields, with persecutions(FR)—and eternal life(FS) in the age to come.(FT) 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”(FU)

The Third Prediction of His Death

32 They(FV) were on the road, going up to Jerusalem,(FW) and Jesus was walking ahead of them. They were astonished, but those who followed Him were afraid.(FX) Taking the Twelve aside again, He began to tell them the things that would happen to Him.(FY)

33 “Listen! We are going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man(FZ) will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes,(GA) and they will condemn Him to death. Then they will hand Him over to the Gentiles,(GB) 34 and they will mock Him, spit on Him, flog[ad] Him, and kill Him, and He will rise(GC) after three days.”(GD)

Suffering and Service

35 Then(GE) James(GF) and John,(GG) the sons of Zebedee,(GH) approached Him and said, “Teacher,(GI) we want You to do something for us if we ask You.”

36 “What do you want Me to do for you?” He asked them.

37 They answered Him, “Allow us to sit at Your right and at Your left in Your glory.”(GJ)

38 But Jesus said to them, “You don’t know what you’re asking.(GK) Are you able to drink the cup(GL) I drink or to be baptized with the baptism(GM) I am baptized with?”(GN)

39 “We are able,” they told Him.

Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink, and you will be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with.(GO) 40 But to sit at My right or left is not Mine to give; instead, it is for those it has been prepared for.” 41 When the other 10 disciples heard this, they began to be indignant with James and John.(GP)

42 Jesus called them over and said to them, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles dominate(GQ) them, and their men of high positions exercise power over them. 43 But it must not be like that among you.(GR) On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,(GS) 44 and whoever wants to be first among you must be a slave(GT) to all. 45 For even the Son of Man(GU) did not come to be served, but to serve,(GV) and to give His life(GW)—a ransom(GX) for many.”[ae](GY)

A Blind Man Healed

46 They(GZ) came to Jericho.(HA) And as He was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a large crowd, Bartimaeus (the son of Timaeus), a blind(HB) beggar,(HC) was sitting by the road.(HD) 47 When he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene,(HE) he began to cry out, “Son of David,(HF) Jesus, have mercy(HG) on me!”(HH) 48 Many people told him to keep quiet, but he was crying out all the more, “Have mercy on me,(HI) Son of David!”

49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.”

So they called the blind man and said to him, “Have courage!(HJ) Get up; He’s calling for you.” 50 He threw off his coat,(HK) jumped up, and came to Jesus.

51 Then Jesus answered him, “What do you want(HL) Me to do for you?”

“Rabbouni,”[af](HM) the blind man told Him, “I want to see!”

52 “Go your way,” Jesus told him. “Your faith has healed you.”(HN) Immediately he could see and began to follow Him on the road.

The Triumphal Entry

11 When(HO) they approached Jerusalem,(HP) at Bethphage and Bethany(HQ) near the Mount of Olives, He sent two of His disciples and told them, “Go into the village ahead of you. As soon as you enter it, you will find a young donkey tied there, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here right away.’”

So they went and found a young donkey outside in the street, tied by a door. They untied it, and some of those standing there said to them, “What are you doing, untying the donkey?” They answered them just as Jesus had said, so they let them go. Then they brought the donkey to Jesus and threw their robes on it, and He sat on it.

Many people spread their robes on the road,(HR) and others spread leafy branches cut from the fields.[ag] Then those who went ahead and those who followed kept shouting:

Hosanna!
He who comes in the name(HS)
of the Lord is the blessed One!(HT)[ah]
10 The coming kingdom(HU)
of our father David(HV) is blessed!
Hosanna(HW) in the highest heaven!

11 And He went into Jerusalem(HX) and into the temple complex.(HY) After looking around at everything, since it was already late, He went out to Bethany(HZ) with the Twelve.

The Barren Fig Tree Is Cursed

12 The(IA) next day when they came out from Bethany, He was hungry. 13 After seeing in the distance a fig(IB) tree with leaves, He went to find out if there was anything on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. 14 He said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit(IC) from you again!”(ID) And His disciples(IE) heard it.

Cleansing the Temple Complex

15 They came to Jerusalem,(IF) and He went into the temple complex(IG) and began to throw out those buying and selling in the temple. He overturned the money changers’(IH) tables and the chairs of those selling doves, 16 and would not permit anyone to carry goods through the temple complex.

17 Then He began to teach them: “Is it not written,(II) My house(IJ) will be called a house of prayer(IK) for all nations?[ai] But you have made it a den of thieves!”(IL)[aj] 18 Then the chief priests and the scribes(IM) heard it and started looking for a way to destroy Him. For they were afraid(IN) of Him, because the whole crowd was astonished by His teaching.

19 And whenever evening came, they would go out of the city.

The Barren Fig Tree Is Withered

20 Early(IO) in the morning, as they were passing by, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots up. 21 Then Peter(IP) remembered and said to Him, “Rabbi,(IQ) look! The fig tree that You cursed(IR) is withered.”

22 Jesus replied to them, “Have faith in God.(IS) 23 I assure you:(IT) If anyone says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt(IU) in his heart, but believes(IV) that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.(IW) 24 Therefore I tell you, all the things you pray(IX) and ask for(IY)—believe that you have received[ak](IZ) them, and you will have them. 25 And whenever you stand(JA) praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive(JB) him, so that your Father(JC) in heaven(JD) will also forgive(JE) you your wrongdoing. [26 But if you don’t forgive, neither will your Father in heaven(JF) forgive your wrongdoing.]”[al][am]

Messiah’s Authority Challenged

27 They(JG) came again to Jerusalem.(JH) As He was walking in the temple complex,(JI) the chief priests, the scribes,(JJ) and the elders(JK) came 28 and asked Him, “By what authority(JL) are You doing these things? Who gave You this authority to do these things?”

29 Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question;(JM) then answer Me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 30 Was John’s baptism(JN) from heaven or from men? Answer Me.”

31 They began to argue among themselves: “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Then why didn’t you believe(JO) him?’ 32 But if we say, ‘From men’”—they were afraid of the crowd, because everyone thought that John was a genuine prophet.(JP) 33 So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”

And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

The Parable of the Vineyard Owner

12 Then(JQ) He began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard,(JR) put a fence around it, dug out a pit for a winepress, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenant farmers and went away. At harvest time he sent(JS) a slave(JT) to the farmers to collect some of the fruit(JU) of the vineyard from the farmers. But they took him, beat(JV) him, and sent him away empty-handed.(JW) Again he sent another slave to them, and they[an] hit him on the head and treated him shamefully.[ao] Then he sent another, and they killed that one. He also sent many others; they beat some and they killed some.

“He still had one to send, a beloved(JX) son. Finally(JY) he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’

“But those tenant farmers said among themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours!’ So they seized him, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.

“Therefore, what will the owner[ap](JZ) of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the farmers and give the vineyard to others. 10 Haven’t you read this Scripture:(KA)

The(KB) stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone.[aq](KC)
11 This came from the Lord(KD)
and is wonderful in our eyes?”[ar]

12 Because they knew He had said this parable against them, they were looking for a way to arrest Him, but they were afraid of the crowd. So they left Him and went away.

God and Caesar

13 Then(KE) they sent some of the Pharisees(KF) and the Herodians(KG) to Him to trap Him by what He said.[as](KH) 14 When they came, they said to Him, “Teacher, we know You are truthful and defer to no one, for You don’t show partiality[at](KI) but teach truthfully the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes(KJ) to Caesar or not? 15 Should we pay, or should we not pay?”

But knowing their hypocrisy,(KK) He said to them, “Why are you testing(KL) Me? Bring Me a denarius(KM) to look at.” 16 So they brought one. “Whose image(KN) and inscription(KO) is this?” He asked them.

“Caesar’s,” they said.

17 Then Jesus told them, “Give back to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”(KP) And they were amazed(KQ) at Him.

The Sadducees and the Resurrection

18 Some(KR) Sadducees,(KS) who say there is no resurrection,(KT) came to Him and questioned Him: 19 “Teacher,(KU) Moses(KV) wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, leaves his wife behind, and leaves no child,(KW) his brother should take the wife(KX) and produce offspring for his brother.(KY)[au] 20 There were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and dying, left no offspring. 21 The second also took her, and he died, leaving no offspring. And the third likewise. 22 So the seven[av] left no offspring. Last of all, the woman died too. 23 In the resurrection, when they rise,[aw] whose wife will she be, since the seven had married her?”[ax]

24 Jesus told them, “Are you not deceived because you don’t know the Scriptures(KZ) or the power(LA) of God?(LB) 25 For when they rise(LC) from the dead,(LD) they neither marry nor are given in marriage(LE) but are like angels(LF) in heaven. 26 Now concerning the dead being raised—haven’t you read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the burning bush, how God spoke to him: I(LG) am the God of Abraham(LH) and the God of Isaac(LI) and the God of Jacob?(LJ)[ay] 27 He is not God of the dead but of the living. You are badly deceived.”

The Primary Commands

28 One(LK) of the scribes(LL) approached. When he heard them debating and saw that Jesus answered them well, he asked Him, “Which command is the most important of all?”[az]

29 “This is the most important,”[ba] Jesus answered:

Listen, Israel! The Lord(LM) our God, the Lord(LN) is One.[bb] 30 Love(LO) the Lord your God(LP) with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind,(LQ) and with all your strength.[bc](LR)[bd]

31 “The second is: Love your neighbor(LS) as yourself.(LT)[be] There is no other command(LU) greater than these.”

32 Then the scribe said to Him, “You are right, Teacher! You have correctly said that He is One, and there is no one(LV) else except Him.(LW) 33 And to love(LX) Him with all your heart, with all your understanding,[bf] and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself, is far more important than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices.”(LY)

34 When Jesus saw that he answered intelligently, He said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.”(LZ) And no one dared(MA) to question Him any longer.

The Question about the Messiah

35 So(MB) Jesus asked this question as He taught in the temple complex,(MC) “How can the scribes(MD) say that the Messiah(ME) is the Son of David?(MF) 36 David(MG) himself says by the Holy Spirit:(MH)

The Lord(MI) declared to my Lord,
‘Sit at My right hand(MJ)
until I put Your enemies under Your feet.’(MK)[bg]

37 David himself calls Him ‘Lord’; how then can the Messiah be his Son?” And the large crowd was listening to Him with delight.

Warning against the Scribes

38 He(ML) also said in His teaching, “Beware of the scribes, who want to go around in long robes,(MM) and who want greetings in the marketplaces,(MN) 39 the front seats(MO) in the synagogues,(MP) and the places of honor(MQ) at banquets.(MR) 40 They devour(MS) widows’(MT) houses and say long prayers(MU) just for show. These will receive harsher punishment.”

The Widow’s Gift

41 Sitting(MV) across from the temple treasury,(MW) He watched how the crowd dropped money into the treasury. Many rich(MX) people were putting in large sums. 42 And a poor(MY) widow came and dropped in two tiny coins worth very little.[bh] 43 Summoning His disciples,(MZ) He said to them, “I assure you:(NA) This poor widow has put in more than all those giving to the temple treasury.(NB) 44 For they all gave out of their surplus,(NC) but she out of her poverty(ND) has put in everything she possessed(NE)—all she had to live on.”(NF)

Destruction of the Temple Predicted

13 As(NG) He was going out of the temple complex,(NH) one of His disciples said to Him, “Teacher,(NI) look! What massive stones! What impressive buildings!”(NJ)

Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings?(NK) Not one stone will be left here on another that will not be thrown down!”

Signs of the End of the Age

While He was sitting on the Mount of Olives(NL) across from the temple complex,(NM) Peter,(NN) James,(NO) John,(NP) and Andrew(NQ) asked Him privately, “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign when all these things are about to take place?”

Then Jesus began by telling them: “Watch out that no one deceives you. Many will come in My name,(NR) saying, ‘I am He,’(NS) and they will deceive(NT) many. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars,(NU) don’t be alarmed;(NV) these things must take place,(NW) but the end is not yet. For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.(NX) There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines.[bi] These are the beginning(NY) of birth pains.(NZ)

Persecutions Predicted

“But you, be on your guard! They will hand you over to sanhedrins,[bj](OA) and you will be flogged(OB) in the synagogues.(OC) You will stand before governors and kings(OD) because of Me,(OE) as a witness(OF) to them.(OG) 10 And the good news[bk](OH) must first be proclaimed to all nations. 11 So when they arrest you and hand you over, don’t worry beforehand what you will say. On the contrary, whatever is given to you in that hour—say it. For it isn’t you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. 12 Then brother will betray(OI) brother to death,(OJ) and a father his child. Children will rise up against parents and put them to death. 13 And you will be hated by everyone because of My name.(OK) But the one who endures to the end will be delivered.[bl](OL)

The Great Tribulation

14 “When you see the abomination that causes desolation(OM)[bm] standing where it should not” (let the reader understand[bn]), “then those in Judea(ON) must flee to the mountains! 15 A man on the housetop must not come down or go in to get anything out of his house.(OO) 16 And a man in the field must not go back to get his clothes.(OP) 17 Woe(OQ) to pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days! 18 Pray(OR) it[bo] won’t happen in winter. 19 For those will be days of tribulation,(OS) the kind that hasn’t been from the beginning(OT) of the world,[bp](OU) which God created, until now and never will be again! 20 Unless the Lord(OV) limited those days,(OW) no one would survive.[bq] But He limited those days because of the elect,(OX) whom He chose.(OY)

21 “Then if anyone tells you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!(OZ) Look—there!’ do not believe it! 22 For false messiahs[br] and false prophets will rise up and will perform signs and wonders(PA) to lead astray, if possible, the elect. 23 And you must watch! I have told you everything in advance.

The Coming of the Son of Man

24 “But in those days, after that tribulation:(PB)

The sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not shed its light;
25 the stars(PC) will be falling from the sky,
and the celestial powers will be shaken.(PD)

26 Then they will see the Son of Man(PE) coming(PF) in clouds(PG) with great power(PH) and glory.(PI) 27 He will send out the angels(PJ) and gather His elect(PK) from the four winds, from the end of the earth to the end of the sky.(PL)

The Parable of the Fig Tree

28 “Learn(PM) this parable(PN) from the fig(PO) tree: As soon as its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near.(PP) 29 In the same way, when you see these things happening, know[bs] that He[bt] is near—at the door! 30 I assure you:(PQ) This generation will certainly not pass away until all these things take place. 31 Heaven and earth(PR) will pass away,(PS) but My words will never pass away.(PT)

No One Knows the Day or Hour

32 “Now concerning that day(PU) or hour no one knows—neither the angels(PV) in heaven nor the Son(PW)—except the Father.(PX) 33 Watch! Be alert![bu] For you don’t know when the time(PY) is coming.(PZ) 34 It is like(QA) a man on a journey, who left his house, gave authority to his slaves,(QB) gave each one his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to be alert. 35 Therefore be alert,(QC) since you don’t know when the master(QD) of the house is coming—whether in the evening or at midnight or at the crowing of the rooster or early in the morning. 36 Otherwise, he might come suddenly and find you sleeping.(QE) 37 And what I say to you, I say to everyone: Be alert!”

The Plot to Kill Jesus

14 After(QF) two days it was the Passover(QG) and the Festival(QH) of Unleavened Bread.(QI) The chief priests and the scribes(QJ) were looking for a treacherous(QK) way to arrest and kill Him.(QL) “Not during the festival,” they said, “or there may be rioting among the people.”

The Anointing at Bethany

While(QM) He was in Bethany(QN) at the house of Simon who had a serious skin disease,(QO) as He was reclining at the table,(QP) a woman came with an alabaster jar of pure and expensive fragrant oil of nard. She broke the jar and poured it on His head.(QQ) But some were expressing indignation to one another: “Why has this fragrant oil been wasted? For this oil might have been sold for more than 300 denarii(QR) and given to the poor.”(QS) And they began to scold her.

Then Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why are you bothering her? She has done a noble thing(QT) for Me. You always have the poor(QU) with you, and you can do what is good for them whenever you want, but you do not always have Me.(QV) She has done what she could; she has anointed My body(QW) in advance for burial.(QX) I assure you:(QY) Wherever the gospel(QZ) is proclaimed in the whole world,(RA) what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her.”

10 Then(RB) Judas Iscariot,(RC) one of the Twelve,(RD) went to the chief priests(RE) to hand Him over(RF) to them. 11 And when they heard this, they were glad and promised to give him silver.[bv](RG) So he started looking for a good opportunity to betray(RH) Him.

Preparation for Passover

12 On(RI) the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrifice the Passover lamb,(RJ) His disciples(RK) asked Him, “Where do You want us to go and prepare the Passover so You may eat it?”

13 So He sent two of His disciples and told them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a water jug will meet you. Follow him. 14 Wherever he enters, tell the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher(RL) says, “Where is the guest room for Me to eat the Passover with My disciples?”’ 15 He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make the preparations for us there.” 16 So the disciples(RM) went out, entered the city, and found it just as He had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

Betrayal at the Passover

17 When(RN) evening came, He arrived with the Twelve.(RO) 18 While they were reclining and eating, Jesus said, “I assure you: One of you will betray Me—one who is eating with Me!”

19 They began to be distressed and to say to Him one by one, “Surely not I?”

20 He said to them, “It is one of the Twelve—the one who is dipping bread with Me in the bowl. 21 For the Son of Man(RP) will go just as it is written(RQ) about Him,(RR) but woe(RS) to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”

The First Lord’s Supper

22 As(RT) they were eating, He took bread,(RU) blessed and broke(RV) it, gave it to them,(RW) and said, “Take it;[bw] this is My body.”(RX)

23 Then He took a cup, and after giving thanks,(RY) He gave it to them, and so they all drank from it. 24 He said to them, “This is My blood that establishes the covenant;[bx](RZ) it is shed(SA) for many.(SB) 25 I assure you:(SC) I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine(SD) until that day when I drink it in a new(SE) way[by] in the kingdom of God.”(SF) 26 After singing psalms,[bz] they went out to the Mount of Olives.(SG)

Peter’s Denial Predicted

27 Then(SH) Jesus said to them, “All of you will run away,[ca][cb] because it is written:(SI)

I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep(SJ) will be scattered.(SK)[cc]

28 But after I have been resurrected,(SL) I will go ahead of you to Galilee.”(SM)

29 Peter(SN) told Him, “Even if everyone runs away, I will certainly not!”

30 “I assure you,” Jesus said to him, “today, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times!”(SO)

31 But he kept insisting, “If I have to die with You, I will never deny You!” And they all said the same thing.

The Prayer in the Garden

32 Then(SP) they came to a place named Gethsemane, and He told His disciples,(SQ) “Sit here while I pray.”(SR) 33 He took Peter,(SS) James,(ST) and John(SU) with Him, and He began to be deeply distressed and horrified. 34 Then He said to them, “My soul is swallowed up in sorrow[cd] —to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake.”(SV) 35 Then He went a little farther, fell to the ground, and began to pray that if it were possible, the hour(SW) might pass from Him. 36 And He said, Abba,(SX) Father!(SY) All things are possible(SZ) for You. Take this cup(TA) away from Me. Nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.”

37 Then He came and found them sleeping. “Simon,(TB) are you sleeping?” He asked Peter.(TC) “Couldn’t you stay awake one hour? 38 Stay awake and pray(TD) so that you won’t enter into temptation.(TE) The spirit(TF) is willing, but the flesh(TG) is weak.”

39 Once again He went away and prayed, saying the same thing. 40 And He came again and found them sleeping, because they could not keep their eyes open.[ce] They did not know what to say to Him.(TH) 41 Then He came a third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The time has come. Look, the Son of Man(TI) is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.(TJ) 42 Get up;(TK) let’s go! See—My betrayer is near.”

The Judas Kiss

43 While(TL) He was still speaking, Judas,(TM) one of the Twelve,(TN) suddenly arrived. With him was a mob, with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes,(TO) and the elders.(TP) 44 His betrayer had given them a signal. “The One I kiss,” he said, “He’s the One; arrest Him and take Him away under guard.” 45 So when he came, he went right up to Him and said, “Rabbi!”(TQ)—and kissed Him. 46 Then they took hold of Him and arrested Him. 47 And one of those who stood by drew his sword, struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his ear.

48 But Jesus said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs, as though I were a criminal,[cf] to capture Me? 49 Every day I was among you, teaching in the temple complex,(TR) and you didn’t arrest Me. But the Scriptures(TS) must be fulfilled.”(TT) 50 Then they all deserted Him and ran away.(TU)

51 Now a certain young man,[cg] having a linen cloth wrapped around his naked body, was following Him. They caught hold of him, 52 but he left the linen cloth behind and ran away naked.(TV)

Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin

53 They(TW) led Jesus away to the high priest,(TX) and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes(TY) convened.(TZ) 54 Peter(UA) followed Him at a distance, right into the high priest’s courtyard. He was sitting with the temple police,[ch](UB) warming himself by the fire.[ci]

55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(UC) were looking for testimony against Jesus to put Him to death,(UD) but they could find none. 56 For many were giving false testimony(UE) against Him, but the testimonies did not agree. 57 Some stood up and were giving false testimony against Him, stating, 58 “We heard Him say, ‘I will demolish this sanctuary made by human hands,(UF) and in three days I will build another not made by hands.’” 59 Yet their testimony did not agree(UG) even on this.

60 Then the high priest stood up before them all and questioned Jesus, “Don’t You have an answer to what these men are testifying against You?” 61 But He kept silent and did not answer anything.(UH) Again the high priest questioned Him, “Are You the Messiah,(UI) the Son(UJ) of the Blessed(UK) One?”

62 “I am,”(UL) said Jesus, “and all of you[cj] will see the Son of Man(UM) seated at the right hand(UN) of the Power and coming with the clouds(UO) of heaven.”(UP)[ck]

63 Then the high priest(UQ) tore his robes(UR) and said, “Why do we still need witnesses?(US) 64 You have heard the blasphemy!(UT) What is your decision?”[cl]

And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death.(UU) 65 Then some began to spit on Him, to blindfold Him, and to beat Him, saying, “Prophesy!”(UV) The temple police(UW) also took Him and slapped Him.

Peter Denies His Lord

66 While(UX) Peter(UY) was in the courtyard below, one of the high priest’s servants came. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with that Nazarene,(UZ) Jesus.”

68 But he denied it: “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about!” Then he went out to the entryway, and a rooster crowed.[cm]

69 When the servant saw him again she began to tell those standing nearby, “This man is one of them!”

70 But again he denied it. After a little while those standing there said to Peter again, “You certainly are one of them, since you’re also a Galilean!”[cn](VA)

71 Then he started to curse[co] and to swear with an oath,(VB) “I don’t know this man you’re talking about!”

72 Immediately a rooster crowed a second time,(VC) and Peter remembered when Jesus had spoken the word to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” When he thought about it, he began to weep.[cp]

Jesus Faces Pilate

15 As(VD) soon as it was morning, the chief priests had a meeting with the elders,(VE) scribes,(VF) and the whole Sanhedrin.(VG) After tying Jesus up, they led Him away and handed Him over to Pilate.(VH)

So Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King(VI) of the Jews?”(VJ)

He answered him, “You have said it.”[cq]

And the chief priests began to accuse Him of many things. Then Pilate(VK) questioned Him again, “Are You not answering anything? Look how many things they are accusing You of!” But Jesus still did not answer anything, so Pilate was amazed.

Jesus or Barabbas

At(VL) the festival(VM) it was Pilate’s(VN) custom to release for the people a prisoner they requested. There was one named Barabbas, who was in prison with rebels who had committed murder(VO) during the rebellion.(VP) The crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do for them as was his custom. So Pilate answered them, “Do you want me to release the King(VQ) of the Jews(VR) for you?” 10 For he knew it was because of envy(VS) that the chief priests had handed Him over. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd so that he would release Barabbas to them instead.

12 Pilate asked them again, “Then what do you want me to do with the One you call the King of the Jews?”

13 Again they shouted, “Crucify Him!”

14 Then Pilate said to them, “Why? What has He done wrong?”

But they shouted, “Crucify Him!” all the more.

15 Then, willing to gratify the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. And after having Jesus flogged,[cr] he handed Him over to be crucified.

Mocked by the Military

16 Then(VT) the soldiers led Him away into the courtyard (that is, headquarters(VU)) and called the whole company together. 17 They dressed Him in a purple(VV) robe, twisted together a crown(VW) of thorns, and put it on Him. 18 And they began to salute Him, “Hail,(VX) King(VY) of the Jews!” 19 They kept hitting Him on the head with a reed and spitting on Him. Getting down on their knees,(VZ) they were paying Him homage. 20 When they had mocked(WA) Him, they stripped Him of the purple robe, put His clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him.

Crucified between Two Criminals

21 They(WB) forced a man coming in from the country, who was passing by, to carry Jesus’ cross.(WC) He was Simon, a Cyrenian,(WD) the father of Alexander and Rufus.(WE) 22 And(WF) they brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means Skull Place(WG)). 23 They tried to give Him wine(WH) mixed with myrrh,(WI) but He did not take it. 24 Then they crucified Him and divided His clothes, casting lots(WJ) for them to decide what each would get. 25 Now it was nine in the morning[cs] when they crucified Him. 26 The inscription of the charge written against Him was:

THE KING(WK) OF THE JEWS.(WL)

27 They(WM) crucified two criminals[ct](WN) with Him, one on His right and one on His left. [28 So the Scripture was fulfilled that says: And He was counted among outlaws.][cu](WO)[cv] 29 Those(WP) who passed by were yelling insults(WQ) at[cw] Him, shaking their heads,(WR) and saying, “Ha! The One who would demolish the sanctuary and build it in three days,(WS) 30 save Yourself by coming down from the cross!”(WT) 31 In the same way, the chief priests with the scribes(WU) were mocking Him to one another and saying, “He saved others; He cannot save Himself! 32 Let the Messiah,(WV) the King(WW) of Israel,(WX) come down now from the cross,(WY) so that we may see and believe.”(WZ) Even those who were crucified with Him were taunting Him.

The Death of Jesus

33 When(XA) it was noon,[cx] darkness came over the whole land[cy] until three in the afternoon.[cz](XB) 34 And at three[da] Jesus cried out with a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lemá[db] sabachtháni? which is translated, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?(XC)[dc]

35 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “Look, He’s calling for Elijah!” 36 Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, fixed it on a reed, offered Him a drink,(XD) and said, “Let’s see if Elijah comes to take Him down!”

37 But Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed His last. 38 Then the curtain(XE) of the sanctuary[dd] was split in two from top to bottom. 39 When the centurion, who was standing opposite Him, saw the way He[de] breathed His last, he said, “This man really was God’s Son!”[df](XF)

40 There(XG) were also women looking on from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene,(XH) Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. 41 When He was in Galilee,(XI) they would follow Him and help Him. Many other women had come up with Him to Jerusalem.(XJ)

The Burial of Jesus

42 When(XK) it was already evening, because it was preparation day (that is, the day before the Sabbath), 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Sanhedrin who was himself looking forward(XL) to the kingdom of God,(XM) came and boldly went in to Pilate(XN) and asked for Jesus’ body.(XO) 44 Pilate was surprised that He was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him whether He had already died. 45 When he found out from the centurion, he gave the corpse to Joseph. 46 After he bought some fine linen, he took Him down and wrapped Him in the linen. Then he placed Him in a tomb(XP) cut out of the rock, and rolled a stone(XQ) against the entrance to the tomb. 47 Now(XR) Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching where He was placed.

Resurrection Morning

16 When(XS) the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene,(XT) Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so they could go and anoint Him. Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week,(XU) they went to the tomb(XV) at sunrise. They were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone from the entrance to the tomb for us?” Looking up, they observed that the stone—which was very large—had been rolled away. When(XW) they entered the tomb,(XX) they saw a young man[dg](XY) dressed(XZ) in a long white(YA) robe sitting on the right side; they were amazed and alarmed.

“Don’t be alarmed,” he told them. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene,(YB) who was crucified. He has been resurrected!(YC) He is not here! See the place where they put Him. But go, tell His disciples and Peter,(YD) ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee;(YE) you will see Him there just as He told you.’”

So they went out and started running from the tomb,(YF) because trembling and astonishment overwhelmed them. And they said nothing to anyone,(YG) since they were afraid.

Appearances of the Risen Lord

[Early(YH) on the first day of the week,(YI) after He had risen,(YJ) He appeared first to Mary Magdalene,(YK) out of whom He had driven seven demons.(YL) 10 She went and reported to those who had been with Him, as they were mourning and weeping. 11 Yet, when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe it.(YM) 12 Then after this, He appeared(YN) in a different form to two of them walking on their way into the country.(YO) 13 And they went and reported it to the rest, who did not believe them either.

The Great Commission

14 Later, He appeared to the Eleven(YP) themselves as they were reclining at the table. He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who saw Him after He had been resurrected.(YQ) 15 Then(YR) He said to them, “Go into all the world(YS) and preach the gospel to the whole creation.(YT) 16 Whoever believes(YU) and is baptized will be saved,(YV) but whoever does not believe will be condemned.(YW) 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In My name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new languages; 18 they will pick up snakes;[dh](YX) if they should drink anything deadly, it will never harm(YY) them; they will lay hands on(YZ) the sick, and they will get well.”

The Ascension

19 Then after speaking to them, the Lord Jesus(ZA) was taken up into heaven(ZB) and sat down at the right hand(ZC) of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word by the accompanying signs.][di]

And he said to them, “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see that the kingdom of God has come(A) with power.”(B)

The Transfiguration(C)(D)

After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John(E) with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. His clothes became dazzling white,(F) whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus.

Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi,(G) it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.)

Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud:(H) “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”(I)

Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.

As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone(J) what they had seen until the Son of Man(K) had risen from the dead. 10 They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what “rising from the dead” meant.

11 And they asked him, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

12 Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man(L) must suffer much(M) and be rejected?(N) 13 But I tell you, Elijah has come,(O) and they have done to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him.”

Jesus Heals a Boy Possessed by an Impure Spirit(P)

14 When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them. 15 As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him.

16 “What are you arguing with them about?” he asked.

17 A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. 18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.”

19 “You unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”

20 So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.(Q)

21 Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?”

“From childhood,” he answered. 22 “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”

23 “‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”(R)

24 Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene,(S) he rebuked the impure spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”

26 The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He’s dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.

28 After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately,(T) “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

29 He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer.[a]

Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time(U)

30 They left that place and passed through Galilee. Jesus did not want anyone to know where they were, 31 because he was teaching his disciples. He said to them, “The Son of Man(V) is going to be delivered into the hands of men. They will kill him,(W) and after three days(X) he will rise.”(Y) 32 But they did not understand what he meant(Z) and were afraid to ask him about it.

33 They came to Capernaum.(AA) When he was in the house,(AB) he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” 34 But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.(AC)

35 Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”(AD)

36 He took a little child whom he placed among them. Taking the child in his arms,(AE) he said to them, 37 “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.”(AF)

Whoever Is Not Against Us Is for Us(AG)

38 “Teacher,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we told him to stop, because he was not one of us.”(AH)

39 “Do not stop him,” Jesus said. “For no one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, 40 for whoever is not against us is for us.(AI) 41 Truly I tell you, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to the Messiah will certainly not lose their reward.(AJ)

Causing to Stumble

42 “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble,(AK) it would be better for them if a large millstone were hung around their neck and they were thrown into the sea.(AL) 43 If your hand causes you to stumble,(AM) cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell,(AN) where the fire never goes out.(AO) [44] [b] 45 And if your foot causes you to stumble,(AP) cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.(AQ) [46] [c] 47 And if your eye causes you to stumble,(AR) pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,(AS) 48 where

“‘the worms that eat them do not die,
and the fire is not quenched.’[d](AT)

49 Everyone will be salted(AU) with fire.

50 “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again?(AV) Have salt among yourselves,(AW) and be at peace with each other.”(AX)

Divorce(AY)

10 Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the Jordan.(AZ) Again crowds of people came to him, and as was his custom, he taught them.(BA)

Some Pharisees(BB) came and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”

“What did Moses command you?” he replied.

They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.”(BC)

“It was because your hearts were hard(BD) that Moses wrote you this law,” Jesus replied. “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’[e](BE) ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,[f] and the two will become one flesh.’[g](BF) So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

10 When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. 11 He answered, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her.(BG) 12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”(BH)

The Little Children and Jesus(BI)

13 People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. 14 When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.(BJ) 15 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”(BK) 16 And he took the children in his arms,(BL) placed his hands on them and blessed them.

The Rich and the Kingdom of God(BM)

17 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees(BN) before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”(BO)

18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.’[h](BP)

20 “Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.”

21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor,(BQ) and you will have treasure in heaven.(BR) Then come, follow me.”(BS)

22 At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.

23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich(BT) to enter the kingdom of God!”

24 The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, “Children, how hard it is[i] to enter the kingdom of God!(BU) 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”(BV)

26 The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, “Who then can be saved?”

27 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”(BW)

28 Then Peter spoke up, “We have left everything to follow you!”(BX)

29 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel 30 will fail to receive a hundred times as much(BY) in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—along with persecutions—and in the age to come(BZ) eternal life.(CA) 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”(CB)

Jesus Predicts His Death a Third Time(CC)

32 They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and the disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid. Again he took the Twelve(CD) aside and told them what was going to happen to him. 33 “We are going up to Jerusalem,”(CE) he said, “and the Son of Man(CF) will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law.(CG) They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, 34 who will mock him and spit on him, flog him(CH) and kill him.(CI) Three days later(CJ) he will rise.”(CK)

The Request of James and John(CL)

35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.”

36 “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.

37 They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.”(CM)

38 “You don’t know what you are asking,”(CN) Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup(CO) I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?”(CP)

39 “We can,” they answered.

Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with,(CQ) 40 but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.”

41 When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. 42 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,(CR) 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve,(CS) and to give his life as a ransom for many.”(CT)

Blind Bartimaeus Receives His Sight(CU)

46 Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means “son of Timaeus”), was sitting by the roadside begging. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth,(CV) he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David,(CW) have mercy on me!”

48 Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.”

So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” 50 Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.

51 “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him.

The blind man said, “Rabbi,(CX) I want to see.”

52 “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.”(CY) Immediately he received his sight and followed(CZ) Jesus along the road.

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(DA)(DB)

11 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany(DC) at the Mount of Olives,(DD) Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden.(DE) Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’”

They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway.(DF) As they untied it, some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,

“Hosanna![j]

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”[k](DG)

10 “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!”

“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”(DH)

11 Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.(DI)

Jesus Curses a Fig Tree and Clears the Temple Courts(DJ)(DK)(DL)

12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs.(DM) 14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.

15 On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, 16 and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. 17 And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’[l]?(DN) But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’[m](DO)

18 The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him,(DP) because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.(DQ)

19 When evening came, Jesus and his disciples[n] went out of the city.(DR)

20 In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. 21 Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi,(DS) look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!”

22 “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. 23 “Truly[o] I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.(DT) 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.(DU) 25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”(DV) [26] [p]

The Authority of Jesus Questioned(DW)

27 They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him. 28 “By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you authority to do this?”

29 Jesus replied, “I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 30 John’s baptism—was it from heaven, or of human origin? Tell me!”

31 They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ 32 But if we say, ‘Of human origin’ …” (They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.)(DX)

33 So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”

Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”

The Parable of the Tenants(DY)

12 Jesus then began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard.(DZ) He put a wall around it, dug a pit for the winepress and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place. At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. But they seized him, beat him and sent him away empty-handed. Then he sent another servant to them; they struck this man on the head and treated him shamefully. He sent still another, and that one they killed. He sent many others; some of them they beat, others they killed.

“He had one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all,(EA) saying, ‘They will respect my son.’

“But the tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ So they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.

“What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others. 10 Haven’t you read this passage of Scripture:

“‘The stone the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone;(EB)
11 the Lord has done this,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’[q]?”(EC)

12 Then the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders looked for a way to arrest him because they knew he had spoken the parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd;(ED) so they left him and went away.(EE)

Paying the Imperial Tax to Caesar(EF)

13 Later they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians(EG) to Jesus to catch him(EH) in his words. 14 They came to him and said, “Teacher, we know that you are a man of integrity. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay the imperial tax[r] to Caesar or not? 15 Should we pay or shouldn’t we?”

But Jesus knew their hypocrisy. “Why are you trying to trap me?” he asked. “Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.” 16 They brought the coin, and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?”

“Caesar’s,” they replied.

17 Then Jesus said to them, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.”(EI)

And they were amazed at him.

Marriage at the Resurrection(EJ)

18 Then the Sadducees,(EK) who say there is no resurrection,(EL) came to him with a question. 19 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.(EM) 20 Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died without leaving any children. 21 The second one married the widow, but he also died, leaving no child. It was the same with the third. 22 In fact, none of the seven left any children. Last of all, the woman died too. 23 At the resurrection[s] whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?”

24 Jesus replied, “Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures(EN) or the power of God? 25 When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.(EO) 26 Now about the dead rising—have you not read in the Book of Moses, in the account of the burning bush, how God said to him, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’[t]?(EP) 27 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!”

The Greatest Commandment(EQ)

28 One of the teachers of the law(ER) came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”

29 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.[u] 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’[v](ES) 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[w](ET) There is no commandment greater than these.”

32 “Well said, teacher,” the man replied. “You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him.(EU) 33 To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”(EV)

34 When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.”(EW) And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions.(EX)

Whose Son Is the Messiah?(EY)(EZ)

35 While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts,(FA) he asked, “Why do the teachers of the law say that the Messiah is the son of David?(FB) 36 David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit,(FC) declared:

“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
    “Sit at my right hand
until I put your enemies
    under your feet.”’[x](FD)

37 David himself calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”

The large crowd(FE) listened to him with delight.

Warning Against the Teachers of the Law

38 As he taught, Jesus said, “Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, 39 and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.(FF) 40 They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”

The Widow’s Offering(FG)

41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put(FH) and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.

43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”(FI)

The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times(FJ)

13 As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!”

“Do you see all these great buildings?” replied Jesus. “Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”(FK)

As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives(FL) opposite the temple, Peter, James, John(FM) and Andrew asked him privately, “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?”

Jesus said to them: “Watch out that no one deceives you.(FN) Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.

“You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues.(FO) On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. 10 And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. 11 Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.(FP)

12 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death.(FQ) 13 Everyone will hate you because of me,(FR) but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(FS)

14 “When you see ‘the abomination that causes desolation’[y](FT) standing where it[z] does not belong—let the reader understand—then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 15 Let no one on the housetop go down or enter the house to take anything out. 16 Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. 17 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!(FU) 18 Pray that this will not take place in winter, 19 because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world,(FV) until now—and never to be equaled again.(FW)

20 “If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them. 21 At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it.(FX) 22 For false messiahs and false prophets(FY) will appear and perform signs and wonders(FZ) to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 23 So be on your guard;(GA) I have told you everything ahead of time.

24 “But in those days, following that distress,

“‘the sun will be darkened,
    and the moon will not give its light;
25 the stars will fall from the sky,
and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’[aa](GB)

26 “At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds(GC) with great power and glory. 27 And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.(GD)

28 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 29 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it[ab] is near, right at the door. 30 Truly I tell you, this generation(GE) will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.(GF) 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.(GG)

The Day and Hour Unknown

32 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.(GH) 33 Be on guard! Be alert[ac]!(GI) You do not know when that time will come. 34 It’s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants(GJ) in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.

35 “Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. 36 If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. 37 What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’”(GK)

Jesus Anointed at Bethany(GL)(GM)(GN)

14 Now the Passover(GO) and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.(GP) “But not during the festival,” they said, “or the people may riot.”

While he was in Bethany,(GQ) reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.(GR)

Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages[ad] and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.

“Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. The poor you will always have with you,[ae] and you can help them any time you want.(GS) But you will not always have me. She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial.(GT) Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world,(GU) what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”

10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve,(GV) went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them.(GW) 11 They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over.

The Last Supper(GX)(GY)

12 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb,(GZ) Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”

13 So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 He will show you a large room upstairs,(HA) furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”

16 The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.

17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”

19 They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”

20 “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me.(HB) 21 The Son of Man(HC) will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”

22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it(HD) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”

23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.(HE)

24 “This is my blood of the[af] covenant,(HF) which is poured out for many,” he said to them. 25 “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”(HG)

26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.(HH)

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(HI)

27 “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written:

“‘I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered.’[ag](HJ)

28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”(HK)

29 Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”

30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice[ah] you yourself will disown me three times.”(HL)

31 But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you,(HM) I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.

Gethsemane(HN)

32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James and John(HO) along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,”(HP) he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”
