43 (A)And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to (B)hell,[a] to (C)the unquenchable fire.[b] 45 (D)And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into (E)hell. 47 (F)And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into (G)hell, 48 ‘where (H)their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’ 49 For everyone will be salted with fire.[c] 50 (I)Salt is good, (J)but if the salt has lost its saltiness, how will you make it salty again? (K)Have salt in yourselves, and (L)be at peace with one another.”

Teaching About Divorce

10 (M)And he left there and went (N)to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan, and crowds gathered to him again. And again, as was his custom, he taught them.

And Pharisees came up and in order (O)to test him asked, (P)“Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” He answered them, “What did Moses command you?” They said, (Q)“Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce and to send her away.” And Jesus said to them, “Because of your (R)hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. But (S)from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them (T)male and female.’ (U)‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife,[d] and (V)the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. (W)What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”

10 And in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. 11 And he said to them, (X)“Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her, 12 and (Y)if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

Divorce(M)

10 Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the Jordan.(N) Again crowds of people came to him, and as was his custom, he taught them.(O)

Some Pharisees(P) came and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”

“What did Moses command you?” he replied.

They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.”(Q)

“It was because your hearts were hard(R) that Moses wrote you this law,” Jesus replied. “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’[d](S) ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,[e] and the two will become one flesh.’[f](T) So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

10 When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. 11 He answered, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her.(U) 12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”(V)
