Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

31 (A)And he began to teach them that (B)the Son of Man must (C)suffer many things and (D)be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and (E)after three days rise again. 32 And he said this (F)plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, (G)“Get behind me, Satan! For you (H)are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him (I)deny himself and (J)take up his cross and follow me. 35 For (K)whoever would save his life[a] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake (L)and the gospel's will save it. 36 (M)For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? 37 For (N)what can a man give in return for his soul? 38 For (O)whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this (P)adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed (Q)when he comes in the glory of his Father with (R)the holy angels.”

And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not (S)taste death (T)until they see the kingdom of God after it has come (U)with power.”

The Transfiguration

(V)And after six days Jesus took with him (W)Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was (X)transfigured before them, and (Y)his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one[b] on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. And Peter said to Jesus, (Z)“Rabbi,[c] it is good that we are here. Let us make three (AA)tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” For (AB)he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. And (AC)a cloud overshadowed them, and (AD)a voice came out of the cloud, (AE)“This is my beloved Son;[d] (AF)listen to him.” And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only.

(AG)And as they were coming down the mountain, (AH)he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, (AI)until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 (AJ)So they kept the matter to themselves, (AK)questioning what this rising from the dead might mean. 11 And they asked him, “Why do the scribes say (AL)that first Elijah must come?” 12 And he said to them, “Elijah does come first (AM)to restore all things. And (AN)how is it written of the Son of Man that he should (AO)suffer many things and (AP)be treated with contempt? 13 But I tell you that Elijah has come, and (AQ)they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.”

Jesus Heals a Boy with an Unclean Spirit

14 (AR)And when they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them. 15 And immediately all the crowd, when they saw him, (AS)were greatly amazed and ran up to him and greeted him. 16 And he asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?” 17 And someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has (AT)a spirit that makes him mute. 18 And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast it out, and (AU)they were not able.” 19 And he answered them, “O (AV)faithless generation, (AW)how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me.” 20 And they brought the boy to him. And when the spirit saw him, immediately it (AX)convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. 21 And Jesus asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. 22 And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But (AY)if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” 23 And Jesus said to him, (AZ)“‘If you can’! (BA)All things are possible for one who believes.” 24 Immediately the father of the child cried out[e] and said, “I believe; (BB)help my unbelief!” 25 And when Jesus saw that (BC)a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, (BD)“You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” 26 And after crying out and (BE)convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said, “He is dead.” 27 But Jesus (BF)took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. 28 And when he had (BG)entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” 29 And he said to them, “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.”[f]

Jesus Again Foretells Death, Resurrection

30 (BH)They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he did not want anyone to know, 31 for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he is killed, (BI)after three days he will rise.” 32 (BJ)But they did not understand the saying, and were afraid to ask him.

Who Is the Greatest?

33 And (BK)they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house (BL)he asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?” 34 But they kept silent, for on the way (BM)they had argued with one another about who was the greatest. 35 And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, (BN)“If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” 36 And he took a child and put him in the midst of them, and (BO)taking him in his arms, he said to them, 37 (BP)“Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and (BQ)whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.”

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

21 (A)From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that (B)he must go to Jerusalem and (C)suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on (D)the third day be raised. 22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord![a] This shall never happen to you.” 23 But he turned and said to Peter, (E)“Get behind me, Satan! You are (F)a hindrance[b] to me. For you (G)are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him (H)deny himself and (I)take up his cross and follow me. 25 For (J)whoever would save his life[c] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For (K)what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or (L)what shall a man give in return for his soul? 27 (M)For the Son of Man is going to come with (N)his angels in the glory of his Father, and (O)then he will repay each person according to what he has done. 28 Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not (P)taste death (Q)until they see the Son of Man (R)coming in his kingdom.”

The Transfiguration

17 (S)And after six days Jesus took with him (T)Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was (U)transfigured before them, and (V)his face shone like the sun, and (W)his clothes became white as light. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for (X)Elijah.” He was still speaking when, behold, (Y)a bright cloud overshadowed them, and (Z)a voice from the cloud said, (AA)“This is my beloved Son,[d] with whom I am well pleased; (AB)listen to him.” When (AC)the disciples heard this, (AD)they fell on their faces and were terrified. But Jesus came and (AE)touched them, saying, “Rise, and (AF)have no fear.” And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.

(AG)And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, (AH)“Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.” 10 And the disciples asked him, “Then why do the scribes say (AI)that first Elijah must come?” 11 He answered, “Elijah does come, and (AJ)he will restore all things. 12 But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but (AK)did to him whatever they pleased. (AL)So also the Son of Man will certainly suffer at their hands.” 13 (AM)Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.

Jesus Heals a Boy with a Demon

14 (AN)And when they came to the crowd, a man came up to him and, kneeling before him, 15 said, “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he has (AO)seizures and he suffers terribly. For often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. 16 And I brought him to your disciples, and (AP)they could not heal him.” 17 And Jesus answered, “O faithless and (AQ)twisted generation, how long am I to be with you? (AR)How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me.” 18 And Jesus (AS)rebuked the demon,[e] and it[f] came out of him, and (AT)the boy was healed instantly.[g] 19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” 20 He said to them, (AU)“Because of your little faith. For (AV)truly, I say to you, (AW)if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, (AX)you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and (AY)nothing will be impossible for you.”[h]

Jesus Again Foretells Death, Resurrection

22 (AZ)As they were gathering[i] in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men, 23 and they will kill him, and he will be raised on (BA)the third day.” And they were greatly distressed.

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him (F)deny himself and (G)take up his cross (H)daily and follow me. 24 For (I)whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. 25 (J)For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? 26 For (K)whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed (L)when he comes in (M)his glory and the glory of the Father and of (N)the holy angels. 27 But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not (O)taste death (P)until they see the kingdom of God.”

The Transfiguration

28 (Q)Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him (R)Peter and John and James and (S)went up on the mountain to pray. 29 And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was (T)altered, and (U)his clothing became dazzling white. 30 And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure,[a] which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and those who were with him (V)were heavy with sleep, but when they became fully awake (W)they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. 33 And as the men were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make three (X)tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah”—(Y)not knowing what he said. 34 As he was saying these things, (Z)a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 And (AA)a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, (AB)my Chosen One;[b] (AC)listen to him!” 36 And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. (AD)And they kept silent and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen.

Jesus Heals a Boy with an Unclean Spirit

37 (AE)On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met him. 38 And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for (AF)he is my only child. 39 And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out. It convulses him so that he foams at the mouth, and shatters him, and will hardly leave him. 40 And I begged your disciples to cast it out, but (AG)they could not.” 41 Jesus answered, “O (AH)faithless and twisted generation, (AI)how long am I to be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.” 42 While he was coming, the demon threw him to the ground and convulsed him. But Jesus (AJ)rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the boy, and (AK)gave him back to his father. 43 And all were astonished at (AL)the majesty of God.

Jesus Again Foretells His Death

(AM)But while they were all marveling at everything he was doing, Jesus[c] said (AN)to his disciples, 44 “Let these words sink into your ears: (AO)The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.” 45 (AP)But they did not understand this saying, and (AQ)it was concealed from them, so that they might not perceive it. And they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

Who Is the Greatest?

46 (AR)An argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest. 47 But Jesus, knowing the reasoning of their hearts, took a child and put him by his side 48 and said to them, (AS)“Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and (AT)whoever receives me receives him who sent me. For (AU)he who is least among you all is the one who is great.”

Who Is the Greatest?

18 (A)At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you (B)turn and (C)become like children, you (D)will never enter the kingdom of heaven. (E)Whoever humbles himself like this child is the (F)greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

(G)“Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me,
