Peter’s Confession of Christ

27 (A)Jesus went out, along with His disciples, to the villages of (B)Caesarea Philippi; and on the way He questioned His disciples, saying to them, “Who do people say that I am?” 28 (C)They told Him, saying, “John the Baptist; and others say Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.” 29 And He continued questioning them: “But who do you say that I am?” (D)Peter answered and *said to Him, “You are the [a]Christ.” 30 And (E)He [b]warned them to tell no one about Him.

31 (F)And He began to teach them that (G)the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise from the dead. 32 And He was stating the matter (H)plainly. And Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. 33 But turning around and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter and *said, “Get behind Me, (I)Satan; for you are not setting your mind on [c]God’s purposes, but on man’s.”

34 And He summoned the crowd together with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself, (J)take up his cross, and follow Me. 35 For (K)whoever wants to save his [d]life will lose it, but whoever loses his [e]life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36 For what does it benefit a person to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul? 37 For what could a person give in exchange for his soul? 38 For (L)whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, (M)the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He (N)comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”

The Transfiguration

And Jesus was saying to them, (O)Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God when it has come with power.”

(P)And six days later Jesus *took with Him (Q)Peter, [f]James, and John, and *brought them up on a high mountain by themselves. And He was [g]transfigured before them; and (R)His garments became radiant and exceedingly white, as no launderer on earth can whiten them. And Elijah appeared to them along with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus. Peter responded and *said to Jesus, “(S)Rabbi, it is good that we are here; (T)let’s make three [h]tabernacles, one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” For he did not know how to reply; for they became terrified. Then a cloud [i]formed, overshadowing them, and (U)a voice [j]came out of the cloud: “(V)This is My beloved Son; [k]listen to Him!” And suddenly they looked around and saw no one with them anymore, except Jesus alone.

(W)As they were coming down from the mountain, He (X)gave them orders not to relate to anyone what they had seen, [l]until the Son of Man rose from the dead. 10 They [m]seized upon [n]that statement, discussing with one another [o]what rising from the dead meant. 11 And they asked Him, saying, “Why is it that the scribes say that (Y)Elijah must come first?” 12 And He said to them, “Elijah does come first and he restores all things. And yet how is it written of (Z)the Son of Man that (AA)He will suffer many things and be treated with contempt? 13 But I say to you that Elijah has [p]indeed come, and they did to him whatever they wanted, just as it is written of him.”

Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah(A)

27 Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”

28 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;(B) others say Elijah;(C) and still others, one of the prophets.”

29 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”(D)

30 Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.(E)

Jesus Predicts His Death(F)

31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man(G) must suffer many things(H) and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,(I) and that he must be killed(J) and after three days(K) rise again.(L) 32 He spoke plainly(M) about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.

33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!”(N) he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

The Way of the Cross

34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.(O) 35 For whoever wants to save their life[a] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.(P) 36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man(Q) will be ashamed of them(R) when he comes(S) in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

And he said to them, “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see that the kingdom of God has come(T) with power.”(U)

The Transfiguration(V)(W)

After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John(X) with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. His clothes became dazzling white,(Y) whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus.

Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi,(Z) it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.)

Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud:(AA) “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”(AB)

Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.

As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone(AC) what they had seen until the Son of Man(AD) had risen from the dead. 10 They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what “rising from the dead” meant.

11 And they asked him, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

12 Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man(AE) must suffer much(AF) and be rejected?(AG) 13 But I tell you, Elijah has come,(AH) and they have done to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him.”
