32 And they *brought to Him one who was deaf and spoke with difficulty, and they *pleaded with Him to (A)lay His hand on him. 33 (B)And Jesus took him aside from the crowd, by himself, and put His fingers into his ears, and after (C)spitting, He touched his tongue; 34 and looking up to heaven with a (D)sigh, He *said to him, “Ephphatha!” that is, “Be opened!” 35 And his ears were opened, and the [a]impediment of his tongue [b]was removed, and he began speaking plainly. 36 And (E)He gave them orders not to tell anyone; but the more He was ordering them, the more widely they (F)continued to proclaim it. 37 And they were utterly astonished, saying, “He has done all things well; He makes even the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.”

Jesus Feeds Four Thousand

In those days, when there was again a large crowd and they had nothing to eat, (G)Jesus called His disciples and *said to them, (H)I feel compassion for the crowd because they have remained with Me now three days and have nothing to eat. And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way; and some of them have come from a great distance.” And His disciples answered Him, “Where will anyone be able to find enough [c]bread here in this desolate place to satisfy these people?” And He was asking them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven.” And He *directed the crowd to [d]sit down on the ground; and taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks and broke them. And He kept giving them to His disciples to [e]serve to them, and they served them to the crowd. And they also had a few small fish; and (I)after He blessed them, He ordered these to be [f]served as well. And they ate and were satisfied; and they picked up seven large (J)baskets full of what was left over of the broken pieces. Now about four thousand were there, and He sent them away.

32 There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk,(A) and they begged Jesus to place his hand on(B) him.

33 After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spit(C) and touched the man’s tongue. 34 He looked up to heaven(D) and with a deep sigh(E) said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means “Be opened!”). 35 At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.(F)

36 Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone.(G) But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. 37 People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done everything well,” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand(H)(I)(J)

During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people;(K) they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance.”

His disciples answered, “But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?”

“How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.

“Seven,” they replied.

He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people, and they did so. They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute them.(L) The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.(M) About four thousand were present. After he had sent them away,
