The Rejection of Jesus at Nazareth
6 He left that place and came to his home town, and his disciples followed him. 2 On the sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded. They said, ‘Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What deeds of power are being done by his hands! 3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary[a] and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us?’ And they took offence[b] at him. 4 Then Jesus said to them, ‘Prophets are not without honour, except in their home town, and among their own kin, and in their own house.’ 5 And he could do no deed of power there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them. 6 And he was amazed at their unbelief.
The Mission of the Twelve
Then he went about among the villages teaching. 7 He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. 8 He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; 9 but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. 10 He said to them, ‘Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. 11 If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.’ 12 So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent. 13 They cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.
The Death of John the Baptist
14 King Herod heard of it, for Jesus’[c] name had become known. Some were[d] saying, ‘John the baptizer has been raised from the dead; and for this reason these powers are at work in him.’ 15 But others said, ‘It is Elijah.’ And others said, ‘It is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.’ 16 But when Herod heard of it, he said, ‘John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.’
17 For Herod himself had sent men who arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because Herod[e] had married her. 18 For John had been telling Herod, ‘It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.’ 19 And Herodias had a grudge against him, and wanted to kill him. But she could not, 20 for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he protected him. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed;[f] and yet he liked to listen to him. 21 But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and for the leaders of Galilee. 22 When his daughter Herodias[g] came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl, ‘Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it.’ 23 And he solemnly swore to her, ‘Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom.’ 24 She went out and said to her mother, ‘What should I ask for?’ She replied, ‘The head of John the baptizer.’ 25 Immediately she rushed back to the king and requested, ‘I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.’ 26 The king was deeply grieved; yet out of regard for his oaths and for the guests, he did not want to refuse her. 27 Immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard with orders to bring John’s[h] head. He went and beheaded him in the prison, 28 brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. Then the girl gave it to her mother. 29 When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body, and laid it in a tomb.
Feeding the Five Thousand
30 The apostles gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. 31 He said to them, ‘Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.’ For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. 32 And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves. 33 Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they hurried there on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them. 34 As he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. 35 When it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, ‘This is a deserted place, and the hour is now very late; 36 send them away so that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy something for themselves to eat.’ 37 But he answered them, ‘You give them something to eat.’ They said to him, ‘Are we to go and buy two hundred denarii[i] worth of bread, and give it to them to eat?’ 38 And he said to them, ‘How many loaves have you? Go and see.’ When they had found out, they said, ‘Five, and two fish.’ 39 Then he ordered them to get all the people to sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and of fifties. 41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and he divided the two fish among them all. 42 And all ate and were filled; 43 and they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish. 44 Those who had eaten the loaves numbered five thousand men.
Jesus Walks on the Water
45 Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. 46 After saying farewell to them, he went up on the mountain to pray.
47 When evening came, the boat was out on the lake, and he was alone on the land. 48 When he saw that they were straining at the oars against an adverse wind, he came towards them early in the morning, walking on the lake. He intended to pass them by. 49 But when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought it was a ghost and cried out; 50 for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said, ‘Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.’ 51 Then he got into the boat with them and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded, 52 for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.
Healing the Sick in Gennesaret
53 When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored the boat. 54 When they got out of the boat, people at once recognized him, 55 and rushed about that whole region and began to bring the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he went, into villages or cities or farms, they laid the sick in the market-places, and begged him that they might touch even the fringe of his cloak; and all who touched it were healed.

Jésus rejeté à Nazareth
6 Jésus partit de là et se rendit dans sa patrie. Ses disciples le suivirent. 2 Le jour du sabbat, il se mit à enseigner dans la synagogue. Beaucoup de gens l'entendirent; ils étaient étonnés et disaient: «D'où cela lui vient-il? Quelle est cette sagesse qui lui a été donnée? Et comment de tels miracles se font-ils par son intermédiaire? 3 N'est-il pas le charpentier, le fils de Marie, le frère de Jacques, de Joses, de Jude et de Simon? Et ses sœurs ne sont-elles pas ici parmi nous?» Et il représentait un obstacle pour eux. 4 Mais Jésus leur dit: «Un prophète n'est méprisé que dans sa patrie, parmi ses parents et dans sa famille.» 5 Il ne put faire là aucun miracle, si ce n'est qu'il guérit quelques malades en posant les mains sur eux. 6 Et il s'étonnait de leur incrédulité.
Mission des douze apôtres
Jésus parcourait les villages des environs en enseignant. 7 Alors il appela les douze et commença à les envoyer deux à deux, et il leur donna autorité sur les esprits impurs. 8 Il leur recommanda de ne rien prendre pour le voyage, sauf un bâton, de n'avoir ni pain, ni sac, ni argent dans la ceinture, 9 de chausser des sandales et de ne pas mettre deux chemises.
10 Puis il leur dit: «Si quelque part vous entrez dans une maison, restez-y jusqu'à votre départ. 11 Et si, dans une ville, les gens ne vous accueillent pas et ne vous écoutent pas, retirez-vous de là et secouez la poussière de vos pieds[a] en témoignage contre eux. [Je vous le dis en vérité, le jour du jugement, Sodome et Gomorrhe seront traitées moins sévèrement que cette ville-là.]»
12 Ils partirent et prêchèrent en appelant chacun à changer d’attitude. 13 Ils chassaient beaucoup de démons, appliquaient de l'huile à beaucoup de malades et les guérissaient.
Exécution de Jean-Baptiste
14 Le roi Hérode entendit parler de Jésus, car son nom était devenu célèbre. Il disait: «Jean-Baptiste est ressuscité, et c'est pour cela qu'il a le pouvoir de faire des miracles.» 15 D'autres disaient: «C'est Elie.» Et d'autres disaient: «C'est un prophète comme l'un de nos prophètes.» 16 Mais Hérode, en apprenant cela, disait: «Ce Jean que j'ai fait décapiter, c'est lui, il est ressuscité.»
17 En effet, Hérode lui-même avait fait arrêter Jean et l'avait fait enchaîner en prison à cause d'Hérodiade, la femme de son frère Philippe, qu'il avait épousée, 18 car Jean lui disait: «Il ne t'est pas permis d'avoir pour femme l'épouse de ton frère.» 19 Furieuse contre Jean, Hérodiade voulait le faire mourir, mais elle ne le pouvait pas, 20 car Hérode redoutait Jean, sachant que c'était un homme juste et saint, et il le protégeait. Après l'avoir entendu, il était souvent perplexe, et c'était avec plaisir qu'il l'écoutait.
21 Cependant, un jour propice arriva lorsque Hérode, pour son anniversaire, donna un festin à ses grands, aux chefs militaires et aux personnalités de la Galilée. 22 La fille d'Hérodiade entra dans la salle, elle dansa et plut à Hérode et à ses invités. Le roi dit à la jeune fille: «Demande-moi ce que tu veux, et je te le donnerai.» 23 Il ajouta avec serment: «Ce que tu me demanderas, je te le donnerai, même si c'était la moitié de mon royaume.» 24 Elle sortit et dit à sa mère: «Que demanderai-je?» Sa mère répondit: «La tête de Jean-Baptiste.» 25 Elle s'empressa aussitôt de rentrer vers le roi et lui fit cette demande: «Je veux que tu me donnes à l'instant, sur un plat, la tête de Jean-Baptiste.» 26 Le roi fut attristé, mais, à cause de ses serments et des invités, il ne voulut pas refuser. 27 Il envoya sur-le-champ un garde, avec ordre d'apporter la tête de Jean-Baptiste. Le garde alla décapiter Jean dans la prison 28 et apporta la tête sur un plat. Il la donna à la jeune fille et la jeune fille la donna à sa mère. 29 Quand les disciples de Jean apprirent cette nouvelle, ils vinrent prendre son corps et le mirent dans un tombeau.
Multiplication des pains pour 5000 hommes
30 Les apôtres se rassemblèrent autour de Jésus et lui racontèrent tout ce qu'ils avaient fait et tout ce qu'ils avaient enseigné. 31 Jésus leur dit: «Venez à l'écart dans un endroit désert et reposez-vous un peu.» En effet, il y avait beaucoup de monde qui allait et venait, et ils n'avaient même pas le temps de manger.
32 Ils partirent donc dans une barque pour aller à l'écart dans un endroit désert. 33 Beaucoup de gens les virent s'en aller et le reconnurent, et de toutes les villes on accourut à pied et on les devança à l'endroit où ils se rendaient. 34 Quand il sortit de la barque, Jésus vit une grande foule et fut rempli de compassion pour eux, parce qu'ils étaient comme des brebis qui n'ont pas de berger[b], et il se mit à leur enseigner beaucoup de choses.
35 Comme l’heure était déjà bien tardive, ses disciples s'approchèrent de lui et dirent: «Cet endroit est désert, et il est déjà tard. 36 Renvoie-les afin qu'ils aillent dans les campagnes et dans les villages des environs pour s'acheter du pain, car ils n'ont rien à manger.» 37 Jésus leur répondit: «Donnez-leur vous-mêmes à manger!» Mais ils lui dirent: «Faut-il aller acheter des pains pour 200 pièces d’argent et leur donner à manger?» 38 Il leur dit: «Combien de pains avez-vous? Allez voir.» Ils s'en assurèrent et répondirent: «Cinq, et deux poissons.» 39 Alors il leur ordonna de les faire tous asseoir par groupes sur l'herbe verte; 40 ils s'assirent par rangées de 100 et de 50. 41 Il prit les cinq pains et les deux poissons, leva les yeux vers le ciel et prononça la prière de bénédiction. Puis il rompit les pains et les donna aux disciples afin qu'ils les distribuent à la foule. Il partagea aussi les deux poissons entre tous. 42 Tous mangèrent et furent rassasiés, 43 et l'on emporta douze paniers pleins de morceaux de pain et de ce qui restait des poissons. 44 Ceux qui avaient mangé les pains étaient au nombre de 5000 hommes.
45 Aussitôt après, il obligea ses disciples à monter dans la barque et à le précéder sur l'autre rive, vers Bethsaïda, pendant que lui-même renverrait la foule. 46 Quand il l'eut renvoyée, il s'en alla sur la montagne pour prier.
47 Le soir venu, la barque était au milieu du lac et Jésus était seul à terre. 48 Il vit qu'ils avaient beaucoup de peine à ramer, car le vent leur était contraire. Vers la fin de la nuit, il alla vers eux en marchant sur le lac, et il voulait les dépasser. 49 Quand ils le virent marcher sur le lac, ils crurent que c'était un fantôme et ils poussèrent des cris, 50 car ils le voyaient tous et ils étaient affolés. Jésus leur parla aussitôt et leur dit: «Rassurez-vous, c'est moi. N'ayez pas peur!» 51 Puis il monta près d'eux dans la barque, et le vent tomba. Ils étaient en eux-mêmes extrêmement stupéfaits [et étonnés] 52 car ils n'avaient pas compris le miracle des pains, parce que leur cœur était endurci.
53 Après avoir traversé le lac, ils arrivèrent dans la région de Génésareth et y abordèrent. 54 Dès qu'ils furent sortis de la barque, les gens reconnurent Jésus 55 et parcoururent tous les environs; ils se mirent à apporter les malades sur des brancards là où ils apprenaient sa présence. 56 Partout où il arrivait, dans les villages, dans les villes ou dans les campagnes, on mettait les malades sur les places publiques et on le suppliait de leur permettre seulement de toucher le bord de son vêtement. Tous ceux qui le touchaient étaient guéris.

6 Und er zog von dort weg und kam in seine Vaterstadt[a]; und seine Jünger folgten ihm nach.
2 Und als der Sabbat kam, fing er an, in der Synagoge zu lehren; und viele, die zuhörten, erstaunten und sprachen: Woher hat dieser solches? Und was ist das für eine Weisheit[b], die ihm gegeben ist, dass sogar solche Wundertaten durch seine Hände geschehen?
3 Ist dieser nicht der Zimmermann, der Sohn der Maria, der Bruder von Jakobus und Joses und Judas und Simon? Und sind nicht seine Schwestern hier bei uns? Und sie nahmen Anstoß an ihm.
4 Jesus aber sprach zu ihnen: Ein Prophet ist nirgends verachtet außer in seiner Vaterstadt und bei seinen Verwandten und in seinem Haus!
5 Und er konnte dort kein Wunder tun, außer dass er wenigen Kranken die Hände auflegte und sie heilte.
6 Und er verwunderte sich wegen ihres Unglaubens. Und er zog durch die Dörfer ringsumher und lehrte.

7 Und er rief die Zwölf zu sich und begann, sie je zwei und zwei auszusenden, und gab ihnen Vollmacht über die unreinen Geister.
8 Und er befahl ihnen, sie sollten nichts auf den Weg nehmen als nur einen Stab; keine Tasche, kein Brot, kein Geld im Gürtel;

10 Und er sprach zu ihnen: Wo immer ihr in ein Haus eintretet, da bleibt, bis ihr von dort weggeht.
11 Und von allen, die euch nicht aufnehmen noch hören wollen, zieht fort und schüttelt den Staub von euren Füßen, ihnen zum Zeugnis. Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Es wird Sodom und Gomorra erträglicher gehen am Tag des Gerichts als jener Stadt!
12 Und sie gingen und verkündigten, man solle Buße tun,
13 und trieben viele Dämonen aus und salbten viele Kranke mit Öl und heilten sie.
Die Enthauptung Johannes des Täufers
14 Und der König Herodes[c] hörte das (denn sein Name wurde bekannt), und er sprach: Johannes der Täufer ist aus den Toten auferstanden; darum wirken auch die Wunderkräfte in ihm!
15 Andere sagten: Er ist Elia; wieder andere aber sagten: Er ist ein Prophet, oder wie einer der Propheten.
16 Als das Herodes hörte, sprach er: Er ist Johannes, den ich enthauptet habe; der ist aus den Toten auferstanden!
17 Denn er, Herodes, hatte ausgesandt und Johannes ergreifen und ihn im Gefängnis binden lassen wegen Herodias, der Frau seines Bruders Philippus, weil er sie zur Frau genommen hatte.
18 Denn Johannes hatte zu Herodes gesagt: Es ist dir nicht erlaubt, die Frau deines Bruders zu haben!
19 Herodias aber stellte ihm nach und wollte ihn töten; und sie konnte es nicht,
20 denn Herodes fürchtete den Johannes, weil er wusste, dass er ein gerechter und heiliger Mann war, und er bewachte ihn, und er gehorchte ihm in manchem und hörte ihn gern.
21 Als aber ein gelegener Tag kam, als Herodes seinen Großen und Obersten und den Vornehmsten von Galiläa an seinem Geburtstag ein Gastmahl gab,
22 da trat die Tochter der Herodias herein und tanzte. Und weil sie dem Herodes und denen, die mit ihm zu Tisch saßen, gefiel, sprach der König zu dem Mädchen: Bitte von mir, was du willst, so will ich es dir geben!
23 Und er schwor ihr: Was du auch von mir erbitten wirst, das will ich dir geben, bis zur Hälfte meines Königreichs!
24 Sie aber ging hinaus und sprach zu ihrer Mutter: Was soll ich erbitten? Diese aber sprach: Das Haupt Johannes des Täufers!
25 Und sogleich ging sie rasch zum König hinein, bat und sprach: Ich will, dass du mir jetzt gleich auf einer Schüssel das Haupt Johannes des Täufers gibst!
26 Da wurde der König sehr betrübt; doch um des Eides und um derer willen, die mit ihm zu Tisch saßen, wollte er sie nicht abweisen.
27 Und der König schickte sogleich einen von der Wache hin und befahl, dass sein Haupt gebracht werde.
28 Dieser aber ging hin und enthauptete ihn im Gefängnis und brachte sein Haupt auf einer Schüssel und gab es dem Mädchen, und das Mädchen gab es seiner Mutter.
29 Und als seine Jünger es hörten, kamen sie und nahmen seinen Leichnam und legten ihn in ein Grab.
Die Speisung der Fünftausend
30 Und die Apostel versammelten sich bei Jesus und verkündeten ihm alles, was sie getan und was sie gelehrt hatten.
31 Und er sprach zu ihnen: Kommt ihr allein abseits an einen einsamen Ort und ruht ein wenig! Denn es waren viele, die gingen und kamen, und sie hatten nicht einmal Zeit zu essen.
32 Und sie fuhren allein zu Schiff an einen einsamen Ort.
33 Und die Leute sahen sie wegfahren, und viele erkannten ihn; und sie liefen aus allen Städten zu Fuß dort zusammen und kamen ihnen zuvor und versammelten sich bei ihm.
34 Und als Jesus ausstieg, sah er eine große Volksmenge; und er hatte Erbarmen mit ihnen, denn sie waren wie Schafe, die keinen Hirten haben. Und er fing an, sie vieles zu lehren.
35 Und als nun der Tag fast vergangen war, traten seine Jünger zu ihm und sagten: Dieser Ort ist einsam, und der Tag ist fast vergangen.
36 Entlasse sie, damit sie in die Höfe und Dörfer ringsumher gehen und sich Brot kaufen; denn sie haben nichts zu essen.
37 Er aber antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Gebt ihr ihnen zu essen! Und sie sprachen zu ihm: Sollen wir hingehen und für 200 Denare Brot kaufen und ihnen zu essen geben?
38 Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Wie viele Brote habt ihr? Geht hin und seht nach! Und als sie es erkundet hatten, sprachen sie: Fünf, und zwei Fische.
39 Und er befahl ihnen, dass sich alle in Gruppen ins grüne Gras setzen sollten.
40 Und sie setzten sich gruppenweise, zu hundert und zu fünfzig.
41 Und er nahm die fünf Brote und die zwei Fische, blickte zum Himmel auf und dankte, brach die Brote und gab sie seinen Jüngern, damit sie ihnen austeilten; auch die zwei Fische teilte er unter alle.
42 Und sie aßen alle und wurden satt.
43 Und sie hoben zwölf Körbe voll an Brocken auf, und auch von den Fischen.
44 Und die, welche die Brote gegessen hatten, waren etwa 5 000 Männer.

45 Und sogleich nötigte er seine Jünger, in das Schiff zu steigen und ans jenseitige Ufer, nach Bethsaida, vorauszufahren, bis er die Volksmenge entlassen hatte.
46 Und nachdem er sie verabschiedet hatte, ging er auf einen Berg, um zu beten.
47 Und als es Abend geworden war, befand sich das Schiff mitten auf dem See und er allein auf dem Land.
48 Und er sah, dass sie beim Rudern Not litten; denn der Wind stand ihnen entgegen. Und um die vierte Nachtwache kommt er zu ihnen, auf dem See gehend; und er wollte bei ihnen vorübergehen.
49 Als sie ihn aber auf dem See gehen sahen, meinten sie, es sei ein Gespenst, und schrien.
50 Denn sie sahen ihn alle und erschraken. Und sogleich redete er mit ihnen und sprach zu ihnen: Seid getrost, ich bin"s; fürchtet euch nicht!
51 Und er stieg zu ihnen in das Schiff, und der Wind legte sich. Und sie erstaunten bei sich selbst über die Maßen und verwunderten sich.
52 Denn sie waren nicht verständig geworden durch die Brote; denn ihr Herz war verhärtet.
53 Und als sie hinübergefahren waren, kamen sie zum Land Genezareth und legten dort an.
54 Und als sie aus dem Schiff traten, erkannten die Leute ihn sogleich,
55 durchliefen die ganze umliegende Gegend und fingen an, die Kranken auf den Liegematten dorthin zu tragen, wo sie hörten, dass er sei.
56 Und wo er in Dörfer oder Städte oder Gehöfte einkehrte, da legten sie die Kranken auf die freien Plätze und baten ihn, dass sie nur den Saum seines Gewandes[d] anrühren dürften. Und alle, die ihn anrührten, wurden gesund.
