47 And when (A)evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and he was alone on the land. 48 And he saw that they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them. And about (B)the fourth watch of the night[a] he came to them, walking on the sea. (C)He meant to pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost, and cried out, 50 for they all saw him and (D)were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said, (E)“Take heart; it is I. (F)Do not be afraid.” 51 And he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded, 52 for (G)they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts (H)were hardened.

Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost.(A) They cried out, 50 because they all saw him and were terrified.

Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”(B) 51 Then he climbed into the boat(C) with them, and the wind died down.(D) They were completely amazed, 52 for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.(E)
