Jesus Calms a Storm

35 (A)On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves (B)were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 And he awoke and (C)rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and (D)there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you (E)so afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, (F)“Who then is this, that even (G)the wind and the sea obey him?”

Jesus Heals a Man with a Demon

(H)They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes.[a] And when Jesus[b] had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. (I)He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones. And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and (J)fell down before him. And (K)crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, (L)Son of (M)the Most High God? (N)I adjure you by God, do not torment me.” For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is (O)Legion, for we are many.” 10 And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country. 11 Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, 12 and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.” 13 So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea.

14 The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. 15 And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed[c] man, the one who had had (P)the legion, sitting there, (Q)clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. 16 And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. 17 And (R)they began to beg Jesus[d] to depart from their region. 18 As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him. 19 And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and (S)tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” 20 And he went away and began to proclaim in (T)the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.

Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus's Daughter

21 And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea. 22 (U)Then came one of (V)the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet 23 and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and (W)lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” 24 And he went with him.

And a great crowd followed him and (X)thronged about him. 25 And there was a woman (Y)who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, 26 and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. 27 She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. 28 For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” 29 (Z)And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her (AA)disease. 30 And Jesus, perceiving in himself that (AB)power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” 31 And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’ 32 And he looked around to see who had done it. 33 But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. 34 And he said to her, “Daughter, (AC)your faith has made you well; (AD)go in peace, and be healed of your (AE)disease.”

35 While he was still speaking, there came from (AF)the ruler's house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why (AG)trouble (AH)the Teacher any further?” 36 But overhearing[e] what they said, Jesus said to (AI)the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” 37 And he allowed no one to follow him except (AJ)Peter and James and (AK)John the brother of James. 38 They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus[f] saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. 39 And when he had entered, he said to them, (AL)“Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but (AM)sleeping.” 40 And they laughed at him. But he (AN)put them all outside and took the child's father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. 41 (AO)Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, (AP)arise.” 42 And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. 43 And (AQ)he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

(AR)He went away from there and came to (AS)his hometown, and his disciples followed him. And (AT)on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and (AU)many who heard him were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things? What is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by his hands? (AV)Is not this (AW)the carpenter, the son of Mary and (AX)brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And (AY)they took offense at him. And Jesus said to them, (AZ)“A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household.” And (BA)he could do no mighty work there, except that (BB)he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. And (BC)he marveled because of their unbelief.

(BD)And he went about among the villages teaching.

Jesus Calms a Storm

23 (A)And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. 24 And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but (B)he was asleep. 25 And they went and woke him, saying, (C)“Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” 26 And he said to them, “Why are you (D)afraid, (E)O you of little faith?” Then he rose and (F)rebuked the winds and the sea, and (G)there was a great calm. 27 And the men (H)marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even (I)winds and sea obey him?”

Jesus Heals Two Men with Demons

28 (J)And when he came to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenes,[a] two (K)demon-possessed[b] men met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way. 29 And behold, they (L)cried out, “What have you to do with us, (M)O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us (N)before the time?” 30 Now a herd of many pigs was feeding at some distance from them. 31 And the demons begged him, saying, “If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of pigs.” 32 And he said to them, “Go.” So they came out and went into the pigs, and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the waters. 33 The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, especially what had happened to the (O)demon-possessed men. 34 And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him, (P)they begged him to leave their region.

Jesus Heals a Paralytic

And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to (Q)his own city. (R)And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus (S)saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, (T)“Take heart, my son; (U)your sins are forgiven.” And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, (V)“This man is blaspheming.” But Jesus, (W)knowing[c] their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he then said to the paralytic—“Rise, pick up your bed and go home.” And he rose and went home. When the crowds saw it, (X)they were afraid, and (Y)they glorified God, who had (Z)given such authority to men.

Jesus Calls Matthew

(AA)As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called (AB)Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.

10 And as Jesus[d] reclined at table in the house, behold, many (AC)tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples. 11 And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, (AD)“Why does your teacher eat with (AE)tax collectors and sinners?” 12 But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13 Go and learn (AF)what this means: (AG)‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For (AH)I came not to call the righteous, (AI)but sinners.”

A Question About Fasting

14 Then (AJ)the disciples of John came to him, saying, (AK)“Why do we and (AL)the Pharisees fast,[e] but your disciples do not fast?” 15 And Jesus said to them, (AM)“Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? (AN)The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and (AO)then they will fast. 16 No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch tears away from the garment, and a worse tear is made. 17 Neither is new wine put into old (AP)wineskins. If it is, the skins burst and the wine is spilled and the skins are destroyed. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.”

A Girl Restored to Life and a Woman Healed

18 (AQ)While he was saying these things to them, behold, a ruler came in and (AR)knelt before him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.” 19 And Jesus rose and followed him, with his disciples. 20 And behold, a woman (AS)who had suffered from a discharge of blood for twelve years came up behind him and touched (AT)the fringe of his garment, 21 for she said to herself, “If I only touch his garment, I will be made well.” 22 Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, (AU)“Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” (AV)And instantly[f] the woman was made well. 23 And when Jesus came to the ruler's house and saw (AW)the flute players and the crowd making a commotion, 24 he said, “Go away, for (AX)the girl is not dead but (AY)sleeping.” And they laughed at him. 25 But (AZ)when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and (BA)took her by the hand, and the girl arose. 26 And the report of this went through all that district.

Jesus Heals Two Blind Men

27 (BB)And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, “Have mercy on us, (BC)Son of David.” 28 When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” 29 (BD)Then he touched their eyes, saying, (BE)“According to your faith be it done to you.” 30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, (BF)“See that no one knows about it.” 31 (BG)But they went away and spread his fame through all that district.

Jesus Heals a Man Unable to Speak

32 As they were going away, behold, a (BH)demon-oppressed man who was mute (BI)was brought to him. 33 And when the demon had been cast out, the mute man spoke. And the crowds (BJ)marveled, saying, “Never was anything like this seen in Israel.” 34 But the Pharisees said, “He casts out demons by the prince of demons.”

Jesus Calms a Storm

22 (A)One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of (B)the lake.” So they set out, 23 and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on (C)the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. 24 And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and (D)rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, (E)and there was a calm. 25 He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they (F)were afraid, and they (G)marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that (H)he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?”

Jesus Heals a Man with a Demon

26 (I)Then they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes,[a] which is opposite Galilee. 27 When Jesus[b] had stepped out on land, there met him a man from the city who had demons. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he had not lived in a house (J)but among the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he (K)cried out and fell down before him and said (L)with a loud voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, (M)Son of (N)the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me.” 29 For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him. He was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon (O)into the desert.) 30 Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, (P)“Legion,” for many demons had entered him. 31 And they begged him not to command them to depart into (Q)the abyss. 32 Now a large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them permission. 33 Then the demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into (R)the lake and drowned.

34 When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they fled and told it in the city and in the country. 35 Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting (S)at the feet of Jesus, (T)clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. 36 And those who had seen it told them how the demon-possessed[c] man had been healed. 37 Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes (U)asked him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned. 38 The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return to your home, and (V)declare how much God has done for you.” And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.

Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus's Daughter

40 Now when Jesus returned, the crowd (W)welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him. 41 (X)And there came a man named Jairus, who was (Y)a ruler of the synagogue. And falling at Jesus' feet, he implored him to come to his house, 42 for he had (Z)an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying.

As Jesus went, the people (AA)pressed around him. 43 And there was a woman (AB)who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all her (AC)living on physicians,[d] she could not be healed by anyone. 44 She came up behind him and touched (AD)the fringe of his garment, and (AE)immediately her discharge of blood ceased. 45 And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched me?” When all denied it, Peter[e] said, “Master, the crowds surround you and are pressing in on you!” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I perceive that (AF)power has gone out from me.” 47 And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. 48 And he said to her, “Daughter, (AG)your faith has made you well; (AH)go in peace.”

49 While he was still speaking, someone from (AI)the ruler's house came and said, “Your daughter is dead; (AJ)do not trouble (AK)the Teacher any more.” 50 But Jesus on hearing this answered him, “Do not fear; only believe, and she will be well.” 51 And when he came to the house, he allowed no one to enter with him, except (AL)Peter and (AM)John and James, and the father and mother of the child. 52 And all were weeping and (AN)mourning for her, but he (AO)said, “Do not weep, for (AP)she is not dead but (AQ)sleeping.” 53 And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But (AR)taking her by the hand he called, saying, “Child, (AS)arise.” 55 And (AT)her spirit returned, and she got up at once. And he directed that something should be given her to eat. 56 And her parents were amazed, but (AU)he charged them to tell no one what had happened.

The Healing at the Pool on the Sabbath

After this there was a (A)feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

Now there is in Jerusalem by (B)the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic[a] called Bethesda,[b] which has five roofed colonnades. In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and (C)paralyzed.[c] One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” Jesus said to him, (D)“Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” (E)And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked.

(F)Now that day was the Sabbath. 10 So the Jews[d] said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and (G)it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.” 11 But he answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me, ‘Take up your bed, and walk.’ 12 They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” 13 Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for (H)Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. 14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! (I)Sin no more, (J)that nothing worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him.
