And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, (A)they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay. And when Jesus (B)saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, (C)your sins are forgiven.” Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, “Why does this man speak like that? (D)He is blaspheming! (E)Who can forgive sins but God alone?” And immediately Jesus, (F)perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts?

Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”(A)

Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”(B)

Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things?
