Jesus Is Buried

42 (A)When evening had already come, since it was (B)the preparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea came, a (C)prominent member of the Council, who was himself also (D)waiting for the kingdom of God; and he (E)gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 Now Pilate wondered if He was dead by this time, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He was already dead. 45 And after learning this from (F)the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. 46 Joseph bought a linen cloth, took Him down, wrapped Him in the linen cloth, and laid Him in a tomb which had been cut out in the rock; and he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 (G)Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching to see where He was laid.

The Resurrection

16 (H)When the Sabbath was over, (I)Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of [a]James, and Salome (J)bought spices so that they might come and anoint Him. And very early on the first day of the week, they *came to the tomb when the sun had risen. They were saying to one another, “Who will roll away (K)the stone from the entrance of the tomb for us?” And looking up, they *noticed that the stone had been rolled away; [b]for it was extremely large. And (L)entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe; and they (M)were amazed. But he *said to them, “(N)Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the (O)Nazarene, who has been crucified. (P)He has risen; He is not here; see, here is the place where they laid Him. But go, tell His disciples and Peter, ‘(Q)He is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He told you.’” And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had gripped them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

The Burial of Jesus(A)

42 It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath).(B) So as evening approached, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council,(C) who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God,(D) went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. 45 When he learned from the centurion(E) that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. 46 So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.(F) 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph(G) saw where he was laid.

Jesus Has Risen(H)

16 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices(I) so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”(J)

But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe(K) sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.

“Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene,(L) who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him,(M) just as he told you.’”(N)

Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.[a]

Mark 16:8 Some manuscripts have the following ending between verses 8 and 9, and one manuscript has it after verse 8 (omitting verses 9-20): Then they quickly reported all these instructions to those around Peter. After this, Jesus himself also sent out through them from east to west the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation. Amen.
