33 (A)When the [a](B)sixth hour came, darkness [b]fell over the whole land until the [c](C)ninth hour. 34 At the [d](D)ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, (E)Eloi, Eloi, lema sabaktanei?” which is translated, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” 35 And when some of the bystanders heard Him, they began saying, “Look! He is calling for Elijah!” 36 And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, “[e]Let us see if Elijah comes to take Him down.” 37 (F)But Jesus let out a loud cry, and [f]died. 38 (G)And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 (H)And when the centurion, who was standing [g]right in front of Him, saw that He [h]died in this way, he said, “Truly this man was [i]the Son of God!”

The Death of Jesus(A)

33 At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.(B) 34 And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[a](C)

35 When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”

36 Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar,(D) put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said.

37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.(E)

38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.(F) 39 And when the centurion,(G) who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died,[b] he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”(H)
