The Crucifixion
21 (A)And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. 22 (B)And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). 23 And they offered him wine mixed with (C)myrrh, but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him and (D)divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. 25 And (E)it was the third hour[a] when they crucified him. 26 And the inscription of the charge against him read, (F)“The King of the Jews.” 27 And with him they crucified two (G)robbers, (H)one on his right and one on his left.[b] 29 And (I)those who passed by derided him, (J)wagging their heads and saying, (K)“Aha! (L)You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save yourself, and come down from the cross!” 31 So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, (M)“He saved others; (N)he cannot save himself. 32 Let (O)the Christ, (P)the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may (Q)see and believe.” (R)Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.
The Death of Jesus
33 And when the sixth hour[c] had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.[d] 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus (S)cried with a loud voice, (T)“Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 35 And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” 36 And someone ran and filled a sponge with (U)sour wine, put it on a reed (V)and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” 37 And Jesus (W)uttered a loud cry and (X)breathed his last. 38 And (Y)the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. 39 (Z)And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he[e] breathed his last, he said, (AA)“Truly this man was the Son[f] of God!”
40 There were also (AB)women looking on (AC)from a distance, among whom were (AD)Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and (AE)Salome. 41 When he was in Galilee, they followed him and (AF)ministered to him, and there were also many other women who (AG)came up with him to Jerusalem.
Jesus Is Buried
42 (AH)And when evening had come, since it was (AI)the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, (AJ)a respected member of the council, who (AK)was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died.[g] And summoning (AL)the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead. 45 And when he learned from (AM)the centurion that he was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph. 46 And Joseph[h] bought (AN)a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and (AO)laid him in a tomb (AP)that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled (AQ)a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 (AR)Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.

The Crucifixion of Jesus(A)
21 A certain man from Cyrene,(B) Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus,(C) was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.(D) 22 They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). 23 Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh,(E) but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots(F) to see what each would get.
25 It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. 26 The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews.(G)
27 They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. [28] [a] 29 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads(H) and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,(I) 30 come down from the cross and save yourself!” 31 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him(J) among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! 32 Let this Messiah,(K) this king of Israel,(L) come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
The Death of Jesus(M)
33 At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.(N) 34 And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[b](O)
35 When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”
36 Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar,(P) put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said.
37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.(Q)
38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.(R) 39 And when the centurion,(S) who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died,[c] he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”(T)
40 Some women were watching from a distance.(U) Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph,[d] and Salome.(V) 41 In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.(W)
The Burial of Jesus(X)
42 It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath).(Y) So as evening approached, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council,(Z) who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God,(AA) went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. 45 When he learned from the centurion(AB) that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. 46 So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.(AC) 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph(AD) saw where he was laid.

97 (A)The Lord reigns, (B)let the earth rejoice;
let the many (C)coastlands be glad!
2 (D)Clouds and thick darkness are all around him;
(E)righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
3 (F)Fire goes before him
and burns up his adversaries all around.
4 His (G)lightnings light up the world;
the earth sees and (H)trembles.
5 The mountains (I)melt like (J)wax before the Lord,
before (K)the Lord of all the earth.
6 (L)The heavens proclaim his righteousness,
and all (M)the peoples see his glory.
7 All worshipers of images are (N)put to shame,
who make their boast in (O)worthless idols;
(P)worship him, all you gods!
8 Zion hears and (Q)is glad,
and the daughters of Judah rejoice,
because of your judgments, O Lord.
9 For you, O Lord, are (R)most high over all the earth;
you are exalted far above (S)all gods.
10 O you who love the Lord, (T)hate evil!
He (U)preserves the lives of his (V)saints;
he (W)delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
11 (X)Light (Y)is sown[a] for the righteous,
and joy for the upright in heart.
12 (Z)Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous,
and (AA)give thanks to his holy name!

and consumes(I) his foes on every side.

before the Lord of all the earth.(O)
