¹⁸ And they began to call out to him, “Hail, king of the Jews!”^(A)

⁴² “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel!^(A) Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe^(B) in him. ⁴³ He trusts in God. Let God rescue him^(C) now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”

¹⁴ It was the day of Preparation^(A) of the Passover; it was about noon.^(B)

“Here is your king,”^(C) Pilate said to the Jews.

¹⁵ But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”

“Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.

“We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.

³⁶ The soldiers also came up and mocked him.^(A) They offered him wine vinegar^{(B) 37} and said, “If you are the king of the Jews,^(C) save yourself.”

²⁹ Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads^(A) and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,^{(B) 30} come down from the cross and save yourself!” ³¹ In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him^(C) among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! ³² Let this Messiah,^(D) this king of Israel,^(E) come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
