Jesus Is Mocked
16 (A)Now the soldiers took Him away into (B)the [a]palace (that is, the Praetorium), and they *called together the whole Roman [b](C)cohort. 17 And they *dressed Him in [c]purple, and after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on Him; 18 and they began saluting Him: “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 And they repeatedly beat His head with a [d]reed and spit on Him, and kneeling, they bowed down before Him. 20 And after they had mocked Him, they took the [e]purple cloak off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they *led Him out to crucify Him.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus(A)
16 The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace(B) (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. 17 They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. 18 And they began to call out to him, “Hail, king of the Jews!”(C) 19 Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out(D) to crucify him.

24 And they *crucified Him, and *(A)divided up His garments among themselves, casting [a]lots for them to decide [b]what each man would take. 25 Now it was the [c](B)third hour [d]when they crucified Him. 26 The inscription of the charge against Him [e]read, “(C)THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
27 And they *crucified two [f]rebels with Him, one on His right and one on His left.[g] 29 Those passing by were [h]hurling abuse at Him, (D)shaking their heads and saying, “Ha! You who are going to (E)destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save Yourself by coming down from the cross!” 31 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking Him among themselves and saying, “(F)He saved others; [i]He cannot save Himself! 32 Let this Christ, (G)the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” (H)Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him.
33 (I)When the [j](J)sixth hour came, darkness [k]fell over the whole land until the [l](K)ninth hour. 34 At the [m](L)ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “(M)Eloi, Eloi, lema sabaktanei?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” 35 And when some of the bystanders heard Him, they began saying, “Look! He is calling for Elijah!” 36 And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, “[n]Let us see if Elijah comes to take Him down.” 37 (N)But Jesus let out a loud cry, and [o]died. 38 (O)And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 (P)And when the centurion, who was standing [p]right in front of Him, saw that He [q]died in this way, he said, “Truly this man was [r]the Son of God!”
40 (Q)Now there were also some women watching from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of [s]James (R)the [t]Less and Joses, and (S)Salome.

24 And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots(A) to see what each would get.
25 It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. 26 The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews.(B)
27 They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. [28] [a] 29 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads(C) and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,(D) 30 come down from the cross and save yourself!” 31 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him(E) among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! 32 Let this Messiah,(F) this king of Israel,(G) come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
The Death of Jesus(H)
33 At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.(I) 34 And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[b](J)
35 When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”
36 Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar,(K) put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said.
37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.(L)
38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.(M) 39 And when the centurion,(N) who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died,[c] he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”(O)
40 Some women were watching from a distance.(P) Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph,[d] and Salome.(Q)

(I)He has risen; He is not here; see, here is the place where they laid Him. 7 But go, tell His disciples and Peter, ‘(J)He is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He told you.’” 8 And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had gripped them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

Jesus Has Risen(A)
16 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices(B) so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. 2 Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb 3 and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”(C)
4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. 5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe(D) sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.
6 “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene,(E) who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him,(F) just as he told you.’”(G)
8 Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.[a]
