17 When it was evening, he came with the twelve. 18 And when they had taken their places and were eating, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.”(A) 19 They began to be distressed and to say to him one after another, “Surely, not I?” 20 He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread[a] into the bowl[b] with me. 21 For the Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that one by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that one not to have been born.”

The Institution of the Lord’s Supper

22 While they were eating, he took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.”(B) 23 Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, and all of them drank from it.(C) 24 He said to them, “This is my blood of the[c] covenant, which is poured out for many.(D) 25 Truly I tell you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

Peter’s Denial Foretold

26 When they had sung the hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.(E) 27 And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away,[d] for it is written,

‘I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered.’(F)

28 “But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.”(G) 29 Peter said to him, “Even though all fall away,[e] I will not.”(H) 30 Jesus said to him, “Truly I tell you, this day, this very night, before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times.”(I) 31 But he said vehemently, “Even though I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And all of them said the same.

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took with him Peter and James and John and began to be distressed and agitated. 34 And he said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and keep awake.”(J) 35 And going a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.(K) 36 He said, “Abba,[f] Father, for you all things are possible; remove this cup from me, yet not what I want but what you want.”(L) 37 He came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep awake one hour? 38 Keep awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial;[g] the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”(M) 39 And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words. 40 And once more he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they did not know what to say to him. 41 He came a third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Enough! The hour has come; the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.(N) 42 Get up, let us be going. Look, my betrayer is at hand.”

The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

43 Immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived, and with him there was a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders. 44 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 So when he came, he went up to him at once and said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him.(O) 46 Then they laid hands on him and arrested him. 47 But one of those who stood near drew his sword and struck the slave of the high priest, cutting off his ear. 48 Then Jesus said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me as though I were a rebel? 49 Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not arrest me. But let the scriptures be fulfilled.”(P) 50 All of them deserted him and fled.(Q)

51 A certain young man was following him, wearing nothing but a linen cloth. They caught hold of him, 52 but he left the linen cloth and ran off naked.

Jesus before the Council

53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes were assembled. 54 Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest, and he was sitting with the guards, warming himself at the fire.(R) 55 Now the chief priests and the whole council were looking for testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none. 56 For many gave false testimony against him, and their testimony did not agree. 57 Some stood up and gave false testimony against him, saying, 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.’ ”(S) 59 But even on this point their testimony did not agree. 60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer? What is it that they testify against you?” 61 But he was silent and did not answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah,[h] the Son of the Blessed One?”(T) 62 Jesus said, “I am, and

‘you will see the Son of Man
seated at the right hand of the Power’
and ‘coming with the clouds of heaven.’ ”(U)

63 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “Why do we still need witnesses?(V) 64 You have heard his blasphemy! What is your decision?” All of them condemned him as deserving death.(W) 65 Some began to spit on him, to blindfold him, and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” The guards also took him and beat him.(X)

Peter Denies Jesus

66 While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the female servants of the high priest came by.(Y) 67 When she saw Peter warming himself, she stared at him and said, “You also were with Jesus, the man from Nazareth.”(Z) 68 But he denied it, saying, “I do not know or understand what you are talking about.” And he went out into the forecourt.[i] Then the cock crowed.[j](AA) 69 And the female servant, on seeing him, began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them.” 70 But again he denied it. Then after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, “Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean, and you talk like one.”[k](AB) 71 But he began to curse, and he swore an oath, “I do not know this man you are talking about.” 72 At that moment the cock crowed for the second time. Then Peter remembered that Jesus had said to him, “Before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.(AC)

Jesus before Pilate

15 As soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. They bound Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.(AD) Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” He answered him, “You say so.” Then the chief priests accused him of many things. Pilate asked him again, “Have you no answer? See how many charges they bring against you.” But Jesus made no further reply, so that Pilate was amazed.(AE)

Pilate Hands Jesus Over to Be Crucified

Now at the festival he used to release a prisoner for them, anyone for whom they asked.(AF) Now a man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder during the insurrection. So the crowd came and began to ask Pilate to do for them according to his custom. Then he answered them, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 10 For he realized that it was out of jealousy that the chief priests had handed him over. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas for them instead.(AG) 12 Pilate spoke to them again, “Then what do you wish me to do[l] with the man you call[m] the King of the Jews?” 13 They shouted back, “Crucify him!” 14 Pilate asked them, “Why, what evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him!” 15 So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas for them, and after flogging Jesus he handed him over to be crucified.(AH)

The Soldiers Mock Jesus

16 Then the soldiers led him into the courtyard of the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters), and they called together the whole cohort.(AI) 17 And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and after twisting some thorns into a crown they put it on him. 18 And they began saluting him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 They struck his head with a reed, spat upon him, and knelt down in homage to him. 20 After mocking him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.

The Crucifixion of Jesus

21 They compelled a passer-by, who was coming in from the country, to carry his cross; it was Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.(AJ) 22 Then they brought Jesus[n] to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). 23 And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him and divided his clothes among them, casting lots to decide what each should take.(AK)

25 It was nine o’clock in the morning when they crucified him. 26 The inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.” 27 And with him they crucified two rebels, one on his right and one on his left.[o] 29 Those who passed by derided[p] him, shaking their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days,(AL) 30 save yourself, and come down from the cross!” 31 In the same way the chief priests, along with the scribes, were also mocking him among themselves and saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself.(AM) 32 Let the Messiah,[q] the King of Israel, come down from the cross now, so that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also taunted him.(AN)

The Death of Jesus

33 When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land[r] until three in the afternoon. 34 At three o’clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”[s](AO) 35 When some of the bystanders heard it, they said, “Listen, he is calling for Elijah.” 36 And someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.”(AP) 37 Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last. 38 And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.(AQ) 39 Now when the centurion who stood facing him saw that in this way he[t] breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was God’s Son!”[u](AR)

17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”

19 They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”

20 “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me.(A) 21 The Son of Man(B) will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”

22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it(C) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”

23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.(D)

24 “This is my blood of the[a] covenant,(E) which is poured out for many,” he said to them. 25 “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”(F)

26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.(G)

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(H)

27 “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written:

“‘I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered.’[b](I)

28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”(J)

29 Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”

30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice[c] you yourself will disown me three times.”(K)

31 But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you,(L) I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.

Gethsemane(M)

32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James and John(N) along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,”(O) he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”

35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour(P) might pass from him. 36 “Abba,[d] Father,”(Q) he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup(R) from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”(S)

37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(T) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”(U)

39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.

41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour(V) has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Jesus Arrested(W)

43 Just as he was speaking, Judas,(X) one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.

44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!”(Y) and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts,(Z) and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”(AA) 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.(AB)

51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(AC)(AD)

53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest.(AE) There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.(AF)

55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(AG) were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.

57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another,(AH) not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree.

60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.(AI)

Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”(AJ)

62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”(AK)

63 The high priest tore his clothes.(AL) “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”

They all condemned him as worthy of death.(AM) 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.(AN)

Peter Disowns Jesus(AO)

66 While Peter was below in the courtyard,(AP) one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself,(AQ) she looked closely at him.

“You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,”(AR) she said.

68 But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,”(AS) he said, and went out into the entryway.[e]

69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.” 70 Again he denied it.(AT)

After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”(AU)

71 He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”(AV)

72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time.[f] Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice[g] you will disown me three times.”(AW) And he broke down and wept.

Jesus Before Pilate(AX)

15 Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law(AY) and the whole Sanhedrin,(AZ) made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.(BA)

“Are you the king of the Jews?”(BB) asked Pilate.

“You have said so,” Jesus replied.

The chief priests accused him of many things. So again Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.”

But Jesus still made no reply,(BC) and Pilate was amazed.

Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested. A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.

“Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?”(BD) asked Pilate, 10 knowing it was out of self-interest that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas(BE) instead.

12 “What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked them.

13 “Crucify him!” they shouted.

14 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.

But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”

15 Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged,(BF) and handed him over to be crucified.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus(BG)

16 The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace(BH) (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. 17 They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. 18 And they began to call out to him, “Hail, king of the Jews!”(BI) 19 Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out(BJ) to crucify him.

The Crucifixion of Jesus(BK)

21 A certain man from Cyrene,(BL) Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus,(BM) was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.(BN) 22 They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). 23 Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh,(BO) but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots(BP) to see what each would get.

25 It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. 26 The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews.(BQ)

27 They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. [28] [h] 29 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads(BR) and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,(BS) 30 come down from the cross and save yourself!” 31 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him(BT) among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! 32 Let this Messiah,(BU) this king of Israel,(BV) come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

The Death of Jesus(BW)

33 At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.(BX) 34 And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[i](BY)

35 When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”

36 Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar,(BZ) put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said.

37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.(CA)

38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.(CB) 39 And when the centurion,(CC) who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died,[j] he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”(CD)
