Warning against the Scribes
38 He(A) also said in his teaching, “Beware of the scribes, who want to go around in long robes(B) and who want greetings in the marketplaces,(C) 39 the best seats(D) in the synagogues,(E) and the places of honor(F) at banquets.(G) 40 They devour(H) widows’(I) houses and say long prayers(J) just for show. These will receive harsher judgment.”

They want to be greeted with honor in the markets. 39 They long for places of honor in the synagogues and at banquets. 40 They are the ones who cheat widows out of their homes, and to show off they say long prayers. They will be judged most harshly.”

38 As he taught, Jesus said, “Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, 39 and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.(A) 40 They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”
