Jesus Foretells His Death a Third Time

32 (A)And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and (B)Jesus was walking ahead of them. And (C)they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, 33 saying, “See, (D)we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will (E)condemn him to death and (F)deliver him over to the Gentiles. 34 And they will (G)mock him and (H)spit on him, and flog him and kill him. And (I)after three days he will rise.”

The Request of James and John

35 (J)And James and John, (K)the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us (L)whatever we ask of you.” 36 And he said to them, (M)“What do you want me to do for you?” 37 And they said to him, “Grant us (N)to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, (O)in your glory.” 38 Jesus said to them, (P)“You do not know what you are asking. Are you able (Q)to drink the cup that I drink, or (R)to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 And they said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, (S)“The cup that I drink (T)you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, (U)you will be baptized, 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, (V)but it is for those for whom it has been (W)prepared.” 41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. 42 (X)And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles (Y)lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 But (Z)it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant,[a] 44 and whoever would be first among you must be (AA)slave[b] of all. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but (AB)to serve, and (AC)to give his life as a ransom for (AD)many.”

Jesus Heals Blind Bartimaeus

46 (AE)And they came to Jericho. And (AF)as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, (AG)a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside. 47 And when he heard that it was (AH)Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 48 And many (AI)rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, (AJ)“Take heart. Get up; he is calling you.” 50 And throwing off his (AK)cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. 51 And Jesus said to him, (AL)“What do you want me to do for you?” And the blind man said to him, (AM)“Rabbi, let me recover my sight.” 52 And Jesus said to him, “Go your way; (AN)your faith has (AO)made you well.” And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way.

The Triumphal Entry

11 (AP)Now when they drew near to Jerusalem, to (AQ)Bethphage and Bethany, at (AR)the Mount of Olives, Jesus[c] sent (AS)two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, (AT)on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it. If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately.’” And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it. And some of those standing there said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” And they told them what Jesus had said, and they let them go. And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it. And many (AU)spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. And those who went before and those who followed were shouting, (AV)“Hosanna! (AW)Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! 10 Blessed is (AX)the coming (AY)kingdom of (AZ)our father (BA)David! (BB)Hosanna (BC)in the highest!”

11 (BD)And he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple. And when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, (BE)he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

Jesus Foretells His Death a Third Time

17 (A)And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way he said to them, 18 “See, (B)we are going up to Jerusalem. And the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will (C)condemn him to death 19 and (D)deliver him over to the Gentiles (E)to be mocked and flogged and (F)crucified, and he will be raised on (G)the third day.”

A Mother's Request

20 (H)Then (I)the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and (J)kneeling before him she asked him for something. 21 And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Say that these two sons of mine (K)are to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, (L)in your kingdom.” 22 Jesus answered, (M)“You do not know what you are asking. Are you able (N)to drink the cup that I am to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.” 23 He said to them, (O)“You will drink (P)my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, (Q)but it is for those for whom it has been (R)prepared by my Father.” 24 And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers. 25 But Jesus called them to him and said, (S)“You know that the rulers of the Gentiles (T)lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 26 (U)It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant,[a] 27 and whoever would be first among you must be your slave,[b] 28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served but (V)to serve, and (W)to give his life as a ransom for (X)many.”

Jesus Heals Two Blind Men

29 (Y)And as they went out of Jericho, a great crowd followed him. 30 And behold, there were two blind men sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was passing by, they cried out, “Lord,[c] have mercy on us, (Z)Son of David!” 31 The crowd (AA)rebuked them, telling them to be silent, but they cried out all the more, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” 32 And stopping, Jesus called them and said, “What do you want me to do for you?” 33 They said to him, “Lord, let our eyes be opened.” 34 And Jesus in pity touched their eyes, and immediately they recovered their sight and followed him.

The Triumphal Entry

21 (AB)Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to (AC)the Mount of Olives, then Jesus (AD)sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.” This took place (AE)to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,

(AF)“Say to the daughter of Zion,
‘Behold, your king is coming to you,
(AG)humble, and mounted on a donkey,
on a colt,[d] the foal of a beast of burden.’”

The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. Most of the crowd (AH)spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, (AI)“Hosanna to (AJ)the Son of David! (AK)Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna (AL)in the highest!” 10 And (AM)when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” 11 And the crowds said, “This is (AN)the prophet Jesus, (AO)from Nazareth of Galilee.”

Jesus Foretells His Death a Third Time

31 (A)And taking the twelve, he said to them, “See, (B)we are going up to Jerusalem, and (C)everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished. 32 For he will be (D)delivered over to the Gentiles and will be (E)mocked and shamefully treated and (F)spit upon. 33 And after flogging him, they will kill him, and on (G)the third day he will rise.” 34 (H)But they understood none of these things. (I)This saying was hidden from them, and they did not grasp what was said.

Jesus Heals a Blind Beggar

35 (J)As he drew near to Jericho, (K)a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36 And hearing a crowd going by, he inquired what this meant. 37 They told him, (L)“Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” 38 And he cried out, “Jesus, (M)Son of David, have mercy on me!” 39 And those who were in front (N)rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 40 And Jesus stopped and commanded him to be brought to him. And when he came near, he asked him, 41 (O)“What do you want me to do for you?” He said, “Lord, let me recover my sight.” 42 And Jesus said to him, “Recover your sight; (P)your faith has (Q)made you well.” 43 And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him, (R)glorifying God. And (S)all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

Jesus and Zacchaeus

19 (T)He entered Jericho and was passing through. And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich. And (U)he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into (V)a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for (W)I must stay at your house today.” So he hurried and came down and (X)received him joyfully. And when they saw it, they all (Y)grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods (Z)I give to the poor. And if I have (AA)defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it (AB)fourfold.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since (AC)he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For (AD)the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

The Parable of the Ten Minas

11 As they heard these things, he proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because (AE)they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately. 12 He said therefore, (AF)“A nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return. 13 Calling (AG)ten of his servants,[a] he gave them ten minas,[b] and said to them, ‘Engage in business (AH)until I come.’ 14 But (AI)his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’ 15 When he returned, having received the kingdom, he ordered these servants to whom he had given the money to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by doing business. 16 The first came before him, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made ten minas more.’ 17 And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant![c] Because you have been (AJ)faithful in a very little, (AK)you shall have authority over ten cities.’ 18 And the second came, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made five minas.’ 19 And he said to him, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’ 20 Then another came, saying, ‘Lord, here is your mina, which I kept laid away in (AL)a handkerchief; 21 for I was afraid of you, because you are (AM)a severe man. You take (AN)what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’ 22 He said to him, (AO)‘I will condemn you with your own words, (AP)you wicked servant! You knew that I was (AQ)a severe man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow? 23 Why then did you not put my money in the bank, and at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’ 24 And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’ 25 And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten minas!’ 26 ‘I tell you that (AR)to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 27 But (AS)as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and (AT)slaughter them before me.’”

The Triumphal Entry

28 And when he had said these things, (AU)he went on ahead, (AV)going up to Jerusalem. 29 (AW)When he drew near to Bethphage and (AX)Bethany, at (AY)the mount that is called Olivet, he sent (AZ)two of the disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, (BA)on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’” 32 So those who were sent went away and found it (BB)just as he had told them. 33 And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 And they said, “The Lord has need of it.” 35 And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. 36 And as he rode along, they (BC)spread their cloaks on the road. 37 As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—(BD)the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice (BE)for all the mighty works that they had seen, 38 saying, (BF)“Blessed is (BG)the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and (BH)glory in the highest!” 39 (BI)And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” 40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, (BJ)the very stones would cry out.”

Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem

41 (BK)And when he drew near and saw the city, (BL)he wept over it, 42 saying, (BM)“Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now (BN)they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For (BO)the days will come upon you, when your enemies (BP)will set up a barricade around you and (BQ)surround you and hem you in on every side 44 (BR)and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And (BS)they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know (BT)the time of your (BU)visitation.”

The Triumphal Entry

12 The next day (A)the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13 So they took branches of (B)palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, (C)“Hosanna! Blessed is (D)he who comes in the name of the Lord, even (E)the King of Israel!” 14 And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,

15 (F)“Fear not, daughter of Zion;
behold, your king is coming,
    sitting on a donkey's colt!”

16 (G)His disciples did not understand these things at first, but (H)when Jesus was glorified, then (I)they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. 17 (J)The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. 18 The reason why the crowd went to meet him (K)was that they heard he had done this sign. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, (L)“You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, (M)the world has gone after him.”
