⁵ But Jesus said to them, “^[a](A)Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. ⁶ But ^(B)from the beginning of creation, God ^(C)created them male and female. ^7 (D)For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother^[b], ^8 (E)and the two shall become one flesh; so they are no longer two, but one flesh. ⁹ Therefore, what God has joined together, no person is to separate.”

⁴ And He answered and said, “Have you not read ^(A)that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female, ⁵ and said, ‘^(B)For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife, and ^(C)the two shall become one flesh’? ⁶ So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, no person is to separate.”
