A Discussion about Fasting
18 Once when John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, some people came to Jesus and asked, “Why don’t your disciples fast like John’s disciples and the Pharisees do?”
19 Jesus replied, “Do wedding guests fast while celebrating with the groom? Of course not. They can’t fast while the groom is with them. 20 But someday the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.
21 “Besides, who would patch old clothing with new cloth? For the new patch would shrink and rip away from the old cloth, leaving an even bigger tear than before.
22 “And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the wine would burst the wineskins, and the wine and the skins would both be lost. New wine calls for new wineskins.”
A Discussion about the Sabbath
23 One Sabbath day as Jesus was walking through some grainfields, his disciples began breaking off heads of grain to eat. 24 But the Pharisees said to Jesus, “Look, why are they breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?”
25 Jesus said to them, “Haven’t you ever read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry? 26 He went into the house of God (during the days when Abiathar was high priest) and broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests are allowed to eat. He also gave some to his companions.”
27 Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath!”

19 Jesús les contestó:
—¿Acaso los invitados de una boda ayunan mientras festejan con el novio? Por supuesto que no. No pueden ayunar mientras el novio está con ellos; 20 pero un día el novio será llevado, y entonces sí ayunarán.
21 »Además, ¿a quién se le ocurriría remendar una prenda vieja con tela nueva? Pues el remiendo nuevo encogería y se desprendería de la tela vieja, lo cual dejaría una rotura aún mayor que la anterior.
22 »Y nadie pone vino nuevo en cueros viejos. Pues el vino reventaría los cueros, y tanto el vino como los cueros se echarían a perder. El vino nuevo necesita cueros nuevos.
Discusión acerca del día de descanso
23 Cierto día de descanso, mientras Jesús caminaba por unos terrenos sembrados, sus discípulos comenzaron a arrancar espigas de grano para comer. 24 Entonces los fariseos le dijeron a Jesús:
—Mira, ¿por qué tus discípulos violan la ley al cosechar granos en el día de descanso?
25 Jesús les dijo:
—¿Acaso no han leído en las Escrituras lo que hizo David cuando él y sus compañeros tuvieron hambre? 26 Entró en la casa de Dios (en el tiempo que Abiatar era sumo sacerdote) y violó la ley al comer los panes sagrados que solo a los sacerdotes se les permite comer, y también les dio una porción a sus compañeros.
27 Después Jesús les dijo:
—El día de descanso se hizo para satisfacer las necesidades de la gente, y no para que la gente satisfaga los requisitos del día de descanso. 28 Así que el Hijo del Hombre es Señor, ¡incluso del día de descanso!
